Hello,
I'm looking for advice on creating a dwarven fighter that has the necassary stats and feats and such to become eventually a dwarven defender when the time comes they are introduced to the game. I played one in NWN and enjoyed it alot...I believe the req. for the defender is BaB of 7, dodge, toughness, lawful and of course dwarf.
I'm thinking the beginning stats should look like this:
Str 14
Dex 13(min needed for dodge)
Con 16
Int 13( this is up in the air, needed for combat expertise, whirlwind)
Wiz 10
Chr 6
This still leaves me with 2 points to spend, I can of course bump Int to 14 and get the extra skill, bump Dex up and get the extra ac(although I can't remember if there is any heavy armor that allows you to have a dex bonus of 2) I can get str up to 15 and round it out with one of my advancement upgrades. Of course if I forget about getting combat expertise altogether and drop Int back down to 8, refund 5 points and give me 7 points to spend. Which in that case I think I would put str up to 16 and con to 17.
I guess my question to you guys is that do you think combat expertise/whirlwind is worth the points spent?(its not req. for dwarven defender) Also as a side note, does anyone know if dwarven shild mastery and the shield mastery feat stack? I am assuming no due to the fact most things in this game only the best is taken...but if anyone has any info on that it would greatly apprecaited.
Oh...btw, can someone jog my memory on when I should be recieving my feats? I"m thinking 2 @ lvl 1, 1 @ lvl 2, 1 @ lvl 4, etc every even level. But for some dumb reason part of me tells me I should get one at lvl 3....can't remember though.
Anywho...thanks guys for any input and advice

Initial Stats
---------------
STR 14
DEX 13
CON 16
INT 13
WIS 10
CHA 10
Level Progression -- Ability Inc -- Skills
--------------------------------------------
1 Fighter -- -- Balance(=3), Intimidate^4(=4), Jump^4(=6), Search(=3), Swim^4(=6)
2 Fighter -- -- Intimidate^1(=5), Jump^1(=7), Swim^1(=7)
3 Fighter -- -- Tumble^1.5(=2.5)
4 Fighter -- CON -- Tumble^1.5(=4)
5 Fighter -- -- Intimidate^2(=7), Tumble^0.5(=4.5)
6 Fighter -- -- Intimidate^2(=9), Tumble^0.5(=5)
7 Fighter -- -- Intimidate^1(=10), Tumble^1(=6)
Feat Selection
----------------
1 Dodge, Toughness
2 Combat Expertise
3 Mobility
4 Spring Attack
5
6 Whirlwind Attack, Weapon Focus: Slashing Weapons
7
This looks like an excellent build for what your doing in the sense that at lvl 8 you can up your con to 18 to get a few more hp. As well if they incorporate the need for Endurance as a feat for the DWarven Defender Prestige class then you can swith Endurance with Weapon Focus Slashing.

Your reqs for the dwarven defender look correct, if they put the class in the game. There isn't any common heavy armor that has a dex bonus of 2 just 0 or 1, however in game I have once come across a set of mythril full plate with a max dex of 3. I honestly cant help you with your questions on shield mastery or if whirlwind/expertise, I haven't played any chars with whirl or expertise in game. As far as the shield mastery question do you know what bonuses each give off hand? That might answer the question.
As far as general feats. As a dwarf you get one feat at lvl 1 then every three there after, so 1, 6, 9 etc and can be selected from any feat you are qualified for. For a figher you get a bonus feat at first and second level, and then one every two levels so 1,2,4,6,8,10 etc. These can only come from a specific list for fighters, I dont have the ingame list handy, although it might be somewhere on the site, or maybe someone else knows it off hand. So basically your feats as far as the level cap right now, you would get lvl 1(2), 2, 3, 4, 6 (2), 8 , 9, 10
Hope that helps.

You cannot have unused skill points

And if you are worried about cross classing a skill where you dont have the 2 skill points to get one rank in the skill, it does let you get the .5 rank in a skill.

Mithril Full Plate allows a dex bonus of 3, to refresh your memory. Now I'm not a PNP D&D player so I don't know what a defender is exactly but if it's based on defense like common sense would tell me, then you don't wanna 'forget about getting combat expertise'. With Improved Combat Expertise, at Level 2, I already peaked my AC at 39. Which is more than my level 10 Two Handed DPS Focused Fighter. If you want to be a tank, then focus on Intimidate and UMD (for racial/alignment specific item overriding) for skill points per level, due to the fact that swimming is obselete after you get an Underwater Action Item, and jumping is something that can be boosted by items and spells. and such enhancements as Improved Dodge, Improved Combat Expertise, Improved Mobility, Fighter Action Boosts, or Dwarven Toughness.

Whirlwind, as a character focused on defense, is not a good choice in my opinion. Yes it collects aggro, but not as well as Intimidate. Bullheaded, Skill Focus (Intimidate), or skills that can save you, such as Resiliance (since your stats has the CON for it) would be better suited for a defense character. Assuming I'm not misunderstanding the role of a "defender".

Most damage reduction skills do not stack. Once you get a better shield mastery, the old one goes away. For instance, Shield Mastery is automatically overridden by Improved Shield Mastery. Kind of like when you get Improved Trip, you lose regular Trip.
I hope this indeed helped you in some way or another. If you indeed plan on going tank, and use a tower shield proficient item, remember it will also reduce your chance to hit. So after this and the fact that you will be focusing on Armor Class instead of Attack, you will rely more on a high Intimidate score to collect aggro efficiently.

Heya guys, I'm back and going to start this character soon. Wanted to run by ya the revised build, see what everyone thought.
Str 14
Dex 14
Con 16 (increase to 20 with attr. increase and enhancements)
Int 14
Wis 10
Chr 8
Lvl 1 Dodge, Toughness
2 Luck of Heroes
3 Combat Expertise
4 Shield Mastery
6 Improved Shield Mastery, Improved Shield Bash
8 Resiliance
9 Improved Trip
10 Weapon Focus- Slash
Further levels will see the increase in the offensive power of this toon with Greater Weapon Focus, Weapon Spec and Improved Crit.
Skills are pretty much cookie cutter with max intimidate, UMD, and some others to round out the toon. Enhancements will be the dwarven constitution bonus, dwarven shield mastery(does stack with the normal shield mastery), dwarven spell resistance, and most likely fighter action boost.
Once again this is a build with the intent of becoming a dwarven defender eventually and basically being able to stand in front of anything in the game. heavy hitters, heavy magic, etc etc...this guy will be there no matter what.
Thoughts?
