Wear a Helmet, Ya' Freak!

Sooo...I'm sure all the other football fans out there are amazed at how stupid Big Ben is to get himself put in the hospital for a motorcycle accident. You'd think the youngest quarterback to ever win a Superbowl would be smart enough to wear a helmet. Anyway, I thought I would link everyone to some additional information on the situation. Enjoy.

By the by, I can't believe I used the wrong version of \"wear\" in the thread title. I'm such an idiot...

Ok, its common sense to wear a helmet when you are going 80 mph on a vehicle that is 1/4 the size of everything else. That was an act of pure stupidity if I ever saw one

RE: Where a Helmet, Ya' Freak!

Why wear a helmet when there isn't a law for it? I wouldn't of wore one either, but I would go the speed limit...

I don't know... I would think being a Professional Quarterback for the NFL, something that some people dream about being, you'd be careful about things you do that might affect your career. I like Big Ben, he's a cool guy... what is this? His second career season and he took the team to the Super Bowl? Then go do something that stupid and almost THROW it all the away... I'd be surprise if he isn't warming the bench for most of this season for this stunt.

Last I heard he had 2 knocked out teeth, most of them chipped... fractured nose, multiple laserations on his face and a mild Cocussion.. I heard there's no structural damage to his knees, and he should be up and about in about 9 weeks.

RE: Where a Helmet, Ya' Freak!

Yeah its pretty dumb. I know riding without a helmet is cooler and more comfortable, but we all know that you don't look cool with your brains splattered on the pavement.

I heard he chipped a bunch of teeth, lost 2 of them, had a 9 inch lasceration on the back of his head, broke his noke and his jaw...was in surgery for 9 hours...and is expected to make a recovery in time to possibly play the first game of the regular season on my birthday (September 7).

They said he always drives on local streets, not the highway, always drives the speed limit, and always travels in groups, not alone. I heard it was a 60-something year old woman who hit him and caused this whole thing. I say we blame her too. She's probably too old to be driving anymore and could have easily avoided things if she was capable of driving. Dang old people with their liscenses...

RE: Where a Helmet, Ya' Freak!

Well...They're saying that he'll probably be released in 3-5 days. He didn't have his jaw wired shut, so he won't lose a lot of weight before the season starts. Luckily, he only scraped his knees. What I'm looking for is the retribution from the team. They actually notified him in writing last year that riding his motorcycle while under contract could result in a loss of compensation. I really like Ben, but I think they should burn him. Let him play, but take his cash.

As for who hit him, who gives a damn? His injuries would've been negligible if he had a helmet on. Instead, he spent 7 hours in surgery. Really smart, spanky.

RE: Where a Helmet, Ya' Freak!

Uh, apparantly if he broke his jaw, the front of his head/face hit the car. A motorcycle helmet would not have prevented the front of his head assuming he was riding a chopper (chopper helmets only protect the top of the head, like a bicycle helmet). The full-face helmets are for faster bikes like Ducatis and whatnot. I forgot what he was riding.

I think he'll be able to play and his teammates will forgive him fairly fast. I bet he'll be wearing a helmet if he ever rides again. As for the money, he'll probably lose his bonus this year as will he be forced to pay for all the damages/medical bills since this was spelled out in his contract (the same as most standard NFL contracts with bike riding).

Nope...He was riding a crotch rocket, killer. The bike is advertised as the fastest street legal motorcycle available.

The difference between Ben and other players is that he was specifically warned by the owner about riding motorcycles. His contract is the same, but the letter of notification puts him in a really bad position. They'll probably play him...But something needs to happen here. If they just tell him "no harm, no foul," then it sends a bad message to all the other professional athletes.

Quick update - They released Ben from the hospital last night. I guess the guy is a quick healer. Well...Steelers fans better hope he is. :P

Something about seeing Big Ben's Beef Jerky, or Bettis Flakes in the cereal isle of my local grocery store, it really turns me off of famous athletes. Jealous? Maybe, but who wouldn't like to have enough money to not have to ever worry about bills, retirement, or gettin the kids off to college?

I don't care much if he's the quarterback for the superbowl winning team (I'm a Steelers fan), he's still a man and subject to all the laws that the rest of us are. Fame should not be a factor when it comes to breaking the rules. If you screw up, you pay for it. End of story.

Okay I'm definitely getting into this one. I'm sure most of you don't know I'm a published author, and my first book was a motorcycle safety book entitled "Help! They're all out to get me! The Motorcyclists guide to surviving the everyday world" ISBN # 1-4137-6187-9 (http://helptheyreallouttogetme.com ) Personally I think Ben is an idiot, and if he's driving without a license or permit he should be arrested or ticketed and his regular driveers license suspended like any other rider who did this would be. Also PA stupidly has no helmet law any longer. Freedom is the given reason. Common sense is lacking for anyone not riding a motorcycle with a DOT/SNELL helmet on their heads. I have ridden 150,000 miles on two wheels the last ten years, and never had an accident of any kind. I ride sport bikes, but the key is I don't ride like an idiot. Ben had no training whatsoever, and got exactly what happens to those who think they can buy a motorcycle , throw a leg over and ride off into the sunset. It takes training and dedication to ride a motorcycle properly. It is not the same at all as driving a car. Nothing is the same about it. This is just another example of the dumb jock who thinks he's above it all, and motorcycling gets another black eye becauise of it. yes I know I'm ranting here, but this stuff pisses me off. I've been watching and reading for days about the dangerous motorcycles blah blah blah. The danger is the lack of training and knowledge, as well as car driver awareness or motorcycles. Here's a good new commercial NYS did to promote motorcycle safety http://www.nysdmv.com/media/gtsc_6_5_4_pm.mpg Check that out, because that's what motorcyclists have to contend with everyday, and we have to depend on ourselves to avoid accidents, not anyone else. No one is going to watch out for you on a bike, you have to watch out for yourself. End rant. (Sorry, I get very passionate about this subject.)

RE: Where a Helmet, Ya' Freak!

I live in Pittsburgh, and I'm sick of hearing about it. It is ALL everyone around here is talking about. 15 minuets of a 30 minuet news broadcast is about Big Ben, and every newspaper is covered from page to page with every little detail about his injuries.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.

I think someone already stated it above, but actually we kinda do still. For the first two years after getting your license, you are required to wear a helmet. After that it's your choice.

Yeah that amouynts to really no helmet law. Not that it mattered to Ben he had no license or permit and still rode without one. But he wears one on the field???

Y'know, I hear this pretty often from motorcycle types, and I always wonder, "Who the hell is watching out for me when I'm driving a car?" I understand that motorcyclists have more close calls than car drivers because they're harder to see...But you're still just someone on the road. Cars aren't out to get you, bubba. I'm often confronted with reasons why there are many horrible motorcycle accidents. A great example is when I look over to my right and realize that a bike is sharing half of my freaking lane because the flow of traffic is moving a little too slow for him. How about when I'm in the middle of a turn, and a bike uses the 2 feet left in the lane to fly by me? Motorcycles are dangerous for a lot of reasons, but the main one is that the operators drive them for the thrill of driving them...It isn't just transportation. Honestly, I expect accidents when the vehicle is more similar to an amusement park ride than a mode of travel.

Oh yeah, the sad and terrible truth (click the pic for more info):

EDIT: Just took another look at the pic of the beef jerky and noticed it says "soft & tender" and almost LOL given the recent events!

Get your own bag of Big Ben's Beef Jerky! It's soft and tender just like his head! In other news...

/sigh...this really cracks me up!

YET ANOTHER EDIT: Apparently there are Bettis Jarred Pickles too...

No I disagree with you Mal. You are talking about the small percentage of guys who ride like idiots, not the motoryclists who take the riding seriously. And if you've never ridden one you can't judge how "Out to get you" it feels out there. You gave two great examples of how NOT to ride, and you misunderstood what I meant. As a motorcyclist (Not a biker which is a whole different animal)I have to ride with the mindset that everyone is out to get me , because that is exactly how it seems out on the road, and that's what keeps me safe. I can pick out the motorists who also ride a motorcycle by the way they drive their cars when they see a motorcycle. You mention squids passing you in your own lane, about 9 years ago I was on an entrance ramp to the Belt Parkway in Queens, and a car squeezed next to me and the guardrail to go flying by me, while I was doing 40 in the turn. Lots of automobile drivers drive like garbage, especially in the NY area because they are always in a hurry to get somewhere 10 seconds faster then they would have normally. You miss the point about watching out for motorcycles. We are smaller and harder to see. I ride with my highbeam on during daylight hours to be more visible because of this. A car is much harder to not see then a motorcycle is, so yes, car jockeys should be more aware of motorcyclists, but ultimately it is the motorcyclists own responsibility to be and keep safe. Also , this is the only conuntry in the world where motorcycles are not a form of transportation and are a hobby. But with our gas prices escalating as they are, it's only a matter of time before more nad more motorcycles are on the road. So ride like they are all out to get you, beacuse that is the mindset that will keep you alive!

RE: Where a Helmet, Ya' Freak!

Well...I just disagree. I honestly feel that motorcyclists all act like the world is out to get them because it makes them different from everyone else on the road. It just seems like another futile attempt to separate from the pack. Now, I'm definitely not saying that the danger level isn't higher. I mean, you're freaking riding on a stick with 2 wheels...Like I can't tell that it's more dangerous. As for other countries having more cyclists on the road, I'm hoping that it stays the same here. I've done some time in Europe, and it's out of freaking control. I'm just glad that I never had to do any of the driving, because I still have flashbacks of the ridiculous traffic.

Basically, the point of motorcycles will always fall into the "agree to disagree" category because every car driver really doesn't care, and every motorcyclist thinks that people that don't ride don't understand. Y'know, I've never ridden a rabid pony bareback, but I'd be smart enough to wear some freaking pads and a helmet if I did. :P

That is exactly what I would like to have for when I ride. If you don't mind me asking, how much does a suit like that cost and where can you find one?
