| How can I make my Ranger stronger? |

I have a level 20 ranger and for some reason she's fairly weak. I see other rangers like my friend who seems to be 5 times more powerful than I am.
I don't understand why my ranger is so weak!

I would at least get some more minor runes for starters - that will give you a little more damage.
secondly - what bow are you using? you don't need to spend a bundle, but a obviously a 10-18 dmg bow won't do as much as a 15-28.
third - you're skills. If damage is what you are concerned about, choose high damage skills and armor peircing skills like penetrating attack. of course, you are an r/me which is usually a popular choice for interuption or trapping. Which brings me to my final point, being a good ranger doesn't always mean doing a lot of damage. But if you want to do damage, look at some builds (you may need to change your secondary).

yea i never use my mesmer skills because they drain my energy so much that i can't even attack...plus i need to be too close to use them and i die.
So im definitely getting rid of mesmer once i ascend!
The bow I am using is Zealous Celestial Longbow:
I use penetrating attacks and piercing, but i always mix it by first using it with ignite arrows.
So I'll get some minor runes but what about the major vigor, can I only apply 1?

yes you can only apply one major vigor rune, when you use a 15 above 50 while enchanted try making your secondary monk and use Live Vicasiusly (sry if spelled wrong)
that gives you +15% or use a bow with lenghens poison duration on foe and then use poison arrows. just a couple of idea´s

well at ive got a fairly good ranger after 10 month i think im alowd to say that. are we talking of PvE or PvP.
in PvE i allways bring penetrating attack combined with read the wind for the damage boost aint that bad. whirling defence and trll ungeunt are one off the best ways to keep your heald up. rez signet FTW. please bring this. you still have 3 slots left: with this you can customize your build to your likes. like you can add melandrus shot for that +15 energy boost or another defensive stance. you can pin the enemy down, you can make em bleed. just try and work out your way with these 3.
you would like to add that maybe a superior rune would be great in this case.

Hmmm I don't know where to start but in my opinion Ranger is better than Warrior and Assain in melee damage department. Becauseof that I made my warrior and assain 2nd profession to ranger just so they can do more damage than their original profession with a bow.
First you need to get a shortbow and use it when you want to max your dps. Mods that will help are armor penetration 20/20 if you can afford on the short bow, 15^50 or always 15 is a must, and you must customized the bow to get that extra 20% (don't be an idoit and not customized your weapon just to resale the bow later because you are only gimping yourself).
Second use a level 20 pet to get the extra dps and meat shield. Even if your pet turn out to be a healthy one with the extra hp instead of damage, your pet is still an extra dps on top of your dps; that only use up 2(charm animal, comfort animal)of your 8 skill slot. I recommend bringing alone call of haste and tiger fury if your are serious about maxing your dps.
Third I recommend this set up on skill
Marksmanship 10+2(help with minor rune)=12
Beast Mastery 11+1=12
Experties 10+1=11
Wilderness surival 1+1=2
This set up will give you good balance of Marksmanship and Beast Mastery alone with Experties to lowers your cost of spells. You will notice I only use minor rune because hp is key of success in PvP and PvE if you are not a caster class, since more hp mean your will most likely outlast your enemies; and when they start running it mean more dps for you and zero for them. The 12 point in beast mastery is critical because simply put you will get constant 33% more dps with tiger fury on your bow and have a decent pet with good dps and critical chance. I'll leave the other 4 skill slot free for whatever mood you are in =).
Common causes that make the Ranger weak are?
1)Using a flatbow. I mean flatbow has a nice refire time like the shortbow but it has a serious flight time problem. It a terrible bow to use to hit anything that is not stationary because you will miss(equal zero dps); and using it on pvp you will have a serious problem if you don't take any skill to reduce flight time.
2)Using anything other that short bow when trying to achieve max dps. Well shortbow and flatbow has the fastest refire time all the other bow has lower refire time(equal to lower dps).
3)Weaking your hp with the sup rune. Like I stated before Ranger is a melee dam class, you should be able to take some damage as well as dishing it out. Because when you die or start running to recover lost hp you are not doing dps like you were suppose to.
4)Not using a pet. Even if you decided a build not to utilized 12 skill points in Beastmastery. The pet still does free dps on top of your dps. It's like haveing a dispensable tank to soak up damage and provide a corpse for necro in your party if there is one.

may i correct you ont his one. ranger is physical damagedealer but not melee, melee are short range weapon= axes, daggers, swords, hammers. a bow i ust physical damage but surtenly no melee. you also forget to mention that iff you activate tigers/bestial fury your non-attack skills are DISABLED so dont go spamming it when your health is low.

GUYS! its not only the runes and weapons but skills are important!
ok having a nice bow and good runes work to but eventualy its the skills that decide the tide of a battle.
il asume ur a bow ranger, no trapper or beast master so i suggest using the following build
1. read the wind
2. dual shot
3. punsihing shot
4. marauders shot
5. savage shot.
use in the same order as above
you can self fill in 6,7 and 8.
or use this build, works good to.
another great build ;)
anyway , good luck with your ranger.

well I have r/me and basically he is average damage when I compare to other ranger I met,,, I use mesmer skill etherfeast an energy tap (I found it to work beter then throll onguent IMO)
so I dunno to what secondary you want to change but I would suggest one that gives you good healing,,, if you think mesmer is rough on your energy I do not recommend ele IMO

Ok.. i'm gonna explain shortly why you are not "as powerful" as other rangers.
1. you dont have 16 in marksmanship (you don't have a mask with +1 to marksmanship and a superior marksmanship rune.)
2. you are using the wrong skills on the wrong enemies
3. Your bow might be non-max or a req 13 without an inherent damage mod (10-15^50, 10-15% stanced, 10-15% enchanted, 10-20% below 50% hp, 10-15 while hexed.)
4. you are using all the wrong skills with the wrong attributes in the wrong situations in the wrong teams in the wrong place in the wrong time..

For quick effective damage, i use the FW spirit, followed by Kindle and then spamming Quickshot and needling shot, dis shot when needed.
Lightning reflexes/beastial fury/tigers fury for extra speed
Troll Ungeant for healing and rez sig

ok here is my special build (well not my build, some bits about my build)
ok the point of this is to do maximum damage by using degen not spike dmg but also to portect the monk and other casters from melee attack
Attributes
Marksmanship 9 (minor rune to get it there)
Wilderness survival 16 (i even have this in my running build and the -75 does nothing to speed up my death)
Expertiese the rest (+minor rune)
and if im using vipersnest i go with 7 beastmastery (vipersnest is for my trapper degen build)
Skills
Storm chaser (for getting the hell outta there)
Barbed trap (put infront of casters and monk to give them a head start)
dust trapput just behind/ontop of the casters so if they do get attacked, the opponent is blind)
Firetrap (add to the hpdegen)
Posion Arrow (Elite) (main attack skill)
Trolls (heal +9 WTF)
a Rez (i like rebirth then i use my zealous short bow to get back my energy)
and cap sig/intruppt/vipersnest *evil smile* depending on where im going
my bow is a 15^50 collectors bow (max dmg req9 cost me 200g) with a posionious string (go ahead with another mod, but you dont need it)
so what i do is i pick put the biggest and meanest person and hit them with posion arrow then leave them for 20 seconds (thats when posion runs out)
then i find my monk and other casters and set up dust then barbed trap
then i use storm chaser to get me up to behind my tanks (with my running sheild -2dmg/+45hp in a stance and +5 energy wand) and do flame trap and anyother trap which is ready, barbed is good to help the nuker.
then get back and just change up targets and keep the posion going. dont hit the necros with posion because they pass it back to your team.
thats a rough idea... it may not sound that good/ very assorted skills, but i have used that to take out 2 people in a scrim.... so if it dont work for you, your using it wrong, cus it keeps the monk alive and helps out everyone

Your build is weak vs anyone that aims for u...
You are using a load of traps and don't have any evade stances..., so each time they hit u, u get interupted!
if u wanna go with trappers build, at least take Whirling Defence/Lightning Reflexes/Trappers Focus (Elite) with you

Yea I suggest using Botchu's Quickshot build. Do alot of dmg in pvp and pve. I sue them myself with my Ranger.

That's not the Quikshot build
Quikshot Build:
1) Favorable Winds
2) Read The Wind
3) Beastial Fury
4) Sundering Attack
5) Quick Shot
6) Needling Shot
7) Troll
8) Rez/Cap/Stance
The idea here is to put op FW, use RtW , activate Beastial fury and start spamming at the enemy!
I use 13 Expertice for this build, cuz it lowers the cost of Quick and Needling shot to 2 nrg!
When u activated all 3 skills, use Sundering attack, followed by Quick shot (to do a whole load of dmg), then a normal attack, sundering again followed by Quickshot. When the enemie is under 50% HP, just start spamming Quick and Needling untill he dies! Keep up FW, RtW and Beastial Fury all the time if possible!
When attacked, use a stance if u have one, or just run ;)
I recommend a Vamp bow and a Zealous Bow when using this build! Vamp to do that little extra dmg and Zealous to make sure u don't run outta nrg!

The first thing I thought when I saw this picture is that he mustn't have all his attribute points, it seems no one else thought of this...I wonder why... Anyway I went and worked it out and sure enough you're missing one of the 15 attribute points quests, so I would reccommend that you do that first as that will make the biggest difference on your ranger, well that and using good skills.

I've read all your posts, and some I didn't quite understand (Yea, I'm noob, but I try to understand better).
I have decided to go with Botchu's Super Quick Ranger Build.
Thanks for all the input :)
I'll try to get that other 15point attributes quest done but I've been having trouble getting ANY quests done lately, and I have no money to buy runes ;)
So! I auctioned my green recurve bow to someone before seeing all these posts. I haven't sold it yet, but it's promised to someone so I'm out of luck on that.
Unless my friend gives me back that bow I gave him.....Anyways!

I personally love a B/P build for ToPk which i use this build
R/Mo
Marks 16 (mask, sup rune of marks)
Expertise 13(minor rune)
Wilderness Survival 3
Skill bar
1. Savage Shot(to distract everything)
2. Whirling Defense (to survive some atks)
3. Lightning Reflexes/Throw Dirt/Favorable Winds/Winnowing
4. Charm Animal(pet)
5. Comfort Animal(pet)
6. Troll Unurgent(when in need of hp)
7. Barrage(atk mobs)
8. Rebirth(revive falled teammates)
Then when i do mission ext i normally keep these skill but instead of charm/comfort animal i use Power Shot, and Sundering Attack/Penetrating Attack. Also replace skill 3 with Live Vogorously(sp)
My bows are
Sundering Hornbow of Fortitude
15-28
15% more damage while health is above 50%
Health +30
Sundering 20% armor penetration (20% chance)
And Gargashs Recurve Bow
15-28
15% more dmg while enchanted
Energy +1 on hit
Energy regeneration -1
Health +30
And if you want a vamp bow with 15% more dmg while health is above 50%/enchanted
hp gain on hit 5 hp regen -1
+30hp
You also need a major or superior rune of vigor(preferred) to keep your health up.

may i suggest you put 5 points in beast mastery, and 12 points in experise, wilderness, marks. 5 point in beast mastry so you have 7 seconds of Tigers Fury. and bring skills like ungent, kindle, penetrating shot, poison arrow(for degen) and stuff like that.

Well depending on what your doing your skilsl will vary. But here are some basic strategies when fighting in guild wars pve. When your gonna fight mostly melee charcaters (warriors/sins) It is usually best to be trapper due to both of their higher than average armor(avg being 60) and there willingness to coem right at you. But if you wanna get squishies then focus on bow attacks. Be more of a ranger spiker if you wanna pick off monks and such but if you wann pick of mushies in bulk than bea barrager. So here are soem experimental builds for you.
Spiker(for picking off strong caster/rangers/sins)
Duel shot
kindle arrows/ignite arrows
needling shot
(for cheap 2 energy spammage)
charm pet
heal pet
poisonous bite
power shot
rez
Att points
16 marks
12 wild surv
5ish pet
Barrager(for lots o squishies)
Barrage(duh)
fav winds
tigers fury
lightning reflexes
serpents quickness
charm pet
heal pet
rez
16 marks
10 pet
10 wild
Trappage(for big brutes and sassies)
Spike Trap
barbed trap
dust trap
flame trap
serpents quickness
Troll unegent
energy regen skill of your choice from insperation
mantra of concentration/rez(whatever you think is most important)
wild 16
exp 10(need maj rune)
insp 10
(bring a max trappers +12 energy isp focus shoudl be pretty cheap)
These three builds are basic good strartegies and builds to optimize damage in those cookie cutter situations. You obviously have more than enough skill points for these skills so go get em.
