well, PvE for soloing, i like rock armor/anything. rock armor is prettymuch invincble once you get granite armor at lvl 32.

PvE herder, fire/ice combo is popular with burn/icepatch, whic kills lots quickly.

but hey, im ascrapper, what do i know

RE: tanker help

I have built a Stone/tone tank and while it's pretty hard to hurt... it's very slow and so somewhat frustrating.

I would almost think Inv with anything is pretty good.

RE: tanker help

let me point you in the direction of here and here aaaaand here.

this is a lot of info for tanking that has surfaced in the past few days.

and IMHO yes, people say sets are better than others, but i believe if you build it properly and depending on your style of play, they are just about equal.

of course i never got a stone tank to 32, but so what :p pffffft...

RE: tanker help

To help you out a bit with the builds,as far as armor goes stone is by far the toughest. Its only drawback is that the power rooted slows you way down, so picking up the teleport travel power is almost a must have if you go this route.I have a lvl 30 stone/stone tank and hes the toughest thing i got in my account.

For a good all around, Invul is the best all around armor a tank can get. Its tough, covers just about everything but psionics, and doesnt drain your endurance

For a secondary I would recomend super strength. Its got good attacks, and footstomp is addicting to use.

As for your statement earlier, I think I can shed a little light on your issue. Y'see, there are a couple of major differences between Tankers and Brutes. The main one being that Tankers are almost purely defensive, while Brutes are more half offense and half defense. The Devs created the games' ATs with different ideas in mind. They wanted the heroes to focus more on team play, so you see a lot of powers and builds that are incredibly beneficial in a group. However, they wanted the villains to be able to cut loose and destroy things. For that reason, every AT on the CoV side has more of a focus on offense. All that said, it basically boils down to the fact that Tankers will never do as much damage as Brutes...Because they aren't meant to. I hope the information that the rest of the guys are giving you helps. Feel free to ask any other questions that you might have. See you around, bubba. :)

RE: tanker help

OK, never thought about tp on my stone/stone. That's some advice I think I'll take to the bank 8)

And I do strongly agree. Just about anything depending on your style of play works. It's how you do it. There are some combo's IMO that just don't work (not too many really) but I have seen some really good builds with things I wouldn't off the top think can work. Just that the player running them has designed them around their play or has learned the powers well enough that they know what to do to make them work.

If I can make the TP work for me I may well find I like the stone armor. I know I like invul. Invul is pretty brainless, turn it on and make sure it stays on. Toss in combat jumping with it and id doesn't turn off that often. You're good to go. Truth is the only reason I put fire with it was I wanted the sword. And I liked the sword options for fire better than ice. I really wish I had the broadsword but that's a whole other matter...

that's what scrappers are for! when i get sick of standing around getting hit, i break out a scrappy-do and just go nuts and pretend i'm a tank. i die a lot more, but its just as fun.

RE: tanker help

That really does open up a big question:

Why are they called tanks? They should probibly be called defenders. Blasters... good name. Scrappers... Good name. Controllers... Good name. Defenders... Maybe best called protecters.

I guess I thought Tanks were called tanks not because they had a big gun, but because they are alot less mobile than alot of the other things fighting... like a tank. Or because nothing can stop them, like a tank. But in a modern tank, some are pretty quick. I think I must not have any idea why we call it tanking. I just know it's real good to have one around. Speaking as a healer standing next to a tank pumping him full of heals, I do know my best chance for survival is keeping him alive, in just about every situation.

i'd say they were called tankers because, like you said, 'because nothing can stop them,' well almost nothing. when tanks were first built, they were the offensive line for the infantry. they cleared the way, took a lickin' and kept on tickin'. they were big and powerful. yeah real life tanks had some heavy damage output, but ya cant get everything here. then we wouldnt need scrappers. if you read Brim's and my guides, tanks could also be called protectors depending on the builds. (another shameless plug for you to read it!) the few defenders and trollers i've built, i always tried to stay either really close to the tank or really far and any time i got in trouble, i tried to get closer to him. if you do that, its easier for him to rescue you!

RE: tanker help

A tank is just that. . . Were the damage takers, the "meat shields" if you will. A tanks job and duty is to take the beating that usually gets dished out at the squishy AT's if you wernt there and dish some right back at them. Ive gone toe to toe with a brute before and fought him to a standstill with my main axe/invul. I more than suprised the brute with the strength of my armor when i wouldnt go down. That armor gives a tank survivability in some of the nastiest conditions in the game. I still can solo with my tanks while doing missions set to invincable. My main tank as you can see by the pic to the left, I took the axe as my secondary power. bodies fly and so did that brute when I fired off my vanguard accolade and smacked him with the cleave power. (grins evily). Oh yeah love that extreme damage. Unfortunatly few people who run tanks are axe fans. Great damage. . . .oh yeah. . .baddies pay dearly for getting too close to the axe, but its downside is that its animations are slow and it drains a huge amount of end but im getting off topic here.

Anyways the damge dealers are the blasters from a distance or the scrappers when in melee range. The tank is all about the armor. Its about Being able to plow through a mob of malta, take the legs right out from under the sapper who was hiding toward the back, and herd the rest of em for the resident blaster who's itching to nova them back into the stone age.

I always knew you were a tanker kind of girl. Your favorite hero is Wonder Woman. She's like a Super Strength / Super Reflexes tank! (With Super Jump, Leadership and Presence powers.)

It's too bad you can't have a Super Reflexes tank in CoH, with such a great example of one to point to.

RE: tanker help

Now wait a minute... who said Tanks can't be damage dealers? My Invul/Fire Tank will spank some ass with ease. I stand up to level 53 Bosses without breaking a sweat and being able to take them down fairly quick. Hell one minion goes down in 2 hits, but the most amazing thing I've ever saw and it was today that I saw it. A Tank 2 shot a freaking Stalkers. He had a Invul/Energy build and it blew me away.

If you want a good offensive power to kick some ass with in PvE, go with either Fire Melee or Super Strength. Just from personal experiences.

RE: tanker help

*longs for days when u didnt need ice patch for burn to be any good*

Invuln- very good, low on end, low on toggles, and many will tell u that the auto powers are useless, but i still choose to get them

fire- if u choose this, u will have no problem keeping the baddies on u (blazing aura) however, u will have a problem surviving long enough for it to be of use to ur team. Infernal's melee has one-shotted my fire tank before. but his long range stuff did practically nothing.

ice- not alot of experience, but i hear it grabs aggro twice as good as the others with about the same staying power as fire.

Stone- with granite armor being the only armor u need basically after 32 (u may wanna keep minerals tho.), it is the most defensible tanker primary.

secondaries are up to u, the weapons deal alot of damage but r end-heavy, energy deals the most damage at lvl 35-38, because of two extremem damages, fire does good PBAoE, ice has virtually no damage, and SS is very good.

i think that if i had more time, i would have a invuln/SS with all the invuln powers, i would ony have Jab, haymaker, and footstomp on the SS side (slotted with recharge and taunts) and taunt duh. plus the leaping and presence ans fitness pools.

Thanks to Death Fetish for kicka$$ siggy!!!

Well, since i7, they all got thier own strenghts and weaknesses. So, it all depends on HOW you want to play. Here's a brief synopsis....

Ice - extremely hard to slow or hold, good defence, actually controlls crouds pretty well, very light on actual damage resistance. Goes best with ice to be a controlling tank.

Fire - lends itself to be a very high damage mob killing machine if played right, good damage resistance, no defence, must realy heavily on pool powers to be a monster though. Goes best with fire or a secondary that you can use to stun mobs to give you the opportunity to use burn.

Invuln - Very well balanced between defence and damage resistance. Dull pain (stone and ice have it too under different names) give additional hit points to help boost what might look like low damage resistance on paper, excellent lvl 32 power. Fits well with any secondary.

Stone - A good balance before lvl 32, and an unkillable monster at lvl 32. Very very low on damage, accuracy and recharge because of it. Goes with anything.

I think that for mob killing, super strength is the best power. I just think it looks boring. I think stone is the coolest looking secondary and it works great in PvE and PvP. Energy is kinda cool looking, glowing fists and all, but some of thier powers are really slow in activation, but it has massive single target damage.
