Best Travel Powers?

Hello all; I am new to this site; actually it is the only site that I visit for my needs on info for this wicked game I just picked up about a week ago; and had no prior knowledge of the game until my friend told me about it; in any case I started with a Empathy Defender; named Centrion in the Guardian server in about 5-6 days time I have reached 20th level; have gotten my New costume and cape; and was wondering if I had chosen the right travel power... I have Super Speed and was thinking about taking Teleport just to get me places that I may not be able to get with Super Speed; but so far I havent gotten an accurate description of what it does... So I plan to Respec at 24 just to make sure; but I wanted to do a little research.... what are really good travel powers that work together.... I mean I often see people flying around at REALLY fast speeds; then I heard that Hover and SS work together... sadly I found out they dont... I get alot of in-game input but alot of its not panning out... I was wondering if some helpful Heroes on here wanted to help out a confused Pure Empathy Defender in his plight...

Thanks Alot.. Centrion.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

Welcome to Gameamp!

Having used all the travel powers I would rate them in the following order:

#1 super speed. mainly because of the level 6 power hasten which is an esential skill and it opens up to Super speed,
also SS has a added stealth bonus. Can be used without adding slots.

#2 Super jump. almost as fast as SS but a bit more dangerous if you dont watch where you land, its a very fun travel power overall. Can be used without adding slots.

#3 Fly. Slow and must be slotted with end reducers untill you get stamina or can use Single origin enchancements. However this is the lazy mans travel power. you can fly up high, point towards your destination and turn on auto pilot (the R key or auto run) and slowly but surely make it across a map without facing nothing more dangerous than a skyscraper. great for giving yourself time to grab a drink or some food while enroute to a mission while on a task force. If you choose to respec to this pool Id heavily advise getting air superiority as opposed to hover, Its a decent attack which Defenders dont have to many of.Recommend 2 slots: pre 20 end reduction, post 20 fly enhancements. 20 is if you take Stamina from the fitness pool.

#4 Sprint. Ie. no travel power. Never slot your inherent powers.

#5 Teleport. it is the worst travel power in the game. Its end hungry. You have to have Hover (from the fly pool) to use it efficently/safely. Un slotted going to the green line in steel canyon from the yellow line you will run out of endurance halfway there. When you run out of end you fall, usually leaving you with only one hit point after impact and often enough right next to some +3 bad guys. Most heroes who keep this power have it 6 slotted. 4 end reduction, 2 range.

As far as travel powers that complement eachother well Id go for:

#1 Super speed and super jump. (added stealth and defense, with vertical movement)

#2 Super speed and fly. (you can get anywhere either really fast or really slow)

#3 Teleport and hover (only if your a masochist)

Re: Best Travel Powers?

I think maybe the statement about SS and Hover working together was meaning that some folks who take SS also take Hover. The reason for this is it provides the vertical movement when they need it in some hard to navigate areas like Faultine.

SS is a great travel power though but like all of them has some pros and cons.

The Pros are many: It is extremely fast, uses almost no endurance, makes you very hard to hit, works very well indoors (making escape in door mission very easy).

The con: You have very limited vertical movement making it difficult to get out of crevices and alleys or on top of buildings and other structures.

Typically a lot of folks team it with Swift (for the faster run speed) or Hurdle (for the better jump) in the Fitness Pool. Also if you have picked up Combat Jumping you may well find the combination of Hurdle and Combat Jumping takes care of the vertical movement problem for you.

SJ is also a great travel power.

The Pros: Like SS it uses very little endurance. It can travel large distances in a short amount of time even single slotted. It gives a lot of vertical movement making it easy to get out of crevices, alleys or on top of buildings and other structures.

Cons: It is often a little tricky to land exactly on small structures like pipes or runways. It doesn't work well in places with low ceilings.

This one can also work well in combination with Swift or Hurdle and is often a natural path if your a class that makes use of Combat Jumping. SS and SJ also work together if you decide to pick up two TP's

Teleport is a nice skill but again has its pros and cons.

Pros: it is very fast and it gives you a lot of control as to where you teleport too. You can target the spot you want to go to and land right on that spot. It is also the only travel spot which gives you the ability to bring a friend or team instantly to your location if you pick up teleport friend and team teleport. It also can work very well indoors, particularly with some practice.

Cons: Its tricky to master and requires a lot more constant interaction that SS or SJ. Its range is short and its endurance cost is high. This means that it will have to be slotted to be used effectively. Upon use it grants only a 2 second hover so you have to target your next destination quickly and be sure that you have the endurance for the next jump.

Many people team this with Hover since it does work well with teleport and voids the 2 second Hover problem as you can then stay airborne. Stamina from the Fitness Pool helps if not eliminates the Endurance Drain.

Flight. A lot of like it particularly if they are going for a certain look or want the ability to be airborne without having to do as much work as with Teleport.

The Pros: It gives you unlimited vertical and you can easily fly to any location in the game. It also offers Air Superiority as part of the set which gives the ability too knock flying villains down. This power will probably gain significance with the release of CoV to take out flying/hovering enemies in PvP.

Cons: It uses a lot of endurance and is the slowest of travel powers. This means you will probably want to add endurance reduction and flight speed slots to make it competative withthe other travel powers.

Again Stamina from the Fitness Pool reduces if not eliminates the Endurance Drain problem.

Personally I have too many other usefull skills I wish to slot highly to have to worry about putting any into my travel powers, but thats just personal opinion.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

if you are talking the best two for quickness i would say superspeed and superjump.... but if you are not in a hurry i would strongly recomend fly (that is what my main has) i love the auto piolet (as trans mentioned above) it also means i can get way above all the bad guys and not have to worry about enganging into any battles. i also have recall friend (but not self teleport) b/c it is very hand when you are w/ a group and you get to the place 1st or if you are on a mission w/ friends and someone gets lost, or any other number of things..... teleport self is a very difficult travel power to master, and is a MAJOR end eater. i made the mistake of getting it for my empathy def (all healers should have recall friend so i figured may as well use it as my travel power)... i end up at my location w/ no endurance, and usually hurt from the fall when i don't click on my next spot quick enough. it takes time to master, but if you are on that can it can be pretty nice, but you will have to 6 slot it (3 for end reduction and 3 for range) w/ fly you only need to really 3 slot it for the max speed.

as for the reason healers need recall freind is b/c they are the ones who SHOULD live thru a battle no matter what as they are the one who does the rezing... yes the healer does tend to run when the team starts to go down...that way you can recall your fallen teammates to a safe place to rez and get the group back together.

you may also want to check out this forum post for a bit more info about teleport

I mentioned this in another thread, but Fitness Pool
does two big things for Flyers:

1) Stamina means you'll still have END at the end of a
flight.

2) Swift gives a speed bonus as +SPD, which means ALL
your movement-based (not teleport) travel powers are
boosted.

SuperSpeed hits Speed Cap pretty easily. Hurdle is
always the better choice for such a character, though
Swift means saving a lot of time on "FedEx" missions
from levels 6 to 13. (Though most builds take the first
travel power at level 6 with Swift at 8 or 10, to allow
for slotting good attacks/buffs/etc.)

Fly, on the other hand, greatly benefits from Swift,
plus until you get Stamina, Swift lets you retreat around
corners pretty fast if needed while groundpounding in door
missions. (Fly has an Accuracy Nerf while using it)

Fitness pool is probably overpowered, as 60-75% of all
Hero builds need it.

Also, put it this way: by level 30, you have gained 28
discretionary slots, or enough to take 5 powers to
six-slotted, with 3 slots left over. But, you've also
obtained 17 powers during that time. Since you can't
max-slot everything, that Stamina effectively adds an
endurance reduction slot to all 17 powers, and each further
slot put in Stamina again adds to all 17 powers, well, do
the math :-)

Fly is great fun indeed, and as a Hover Blaster who
groundpounds at times, Fly has worked well as my "get me
out of here" maneuver even in door missions.

Fly's loss of Accuracy means little to an empath Def
who wants to be able to be in range of the groundpounding
party for an area Heal, as there's no to-hit roll :-)
Kinetics Defenders would then either need to 6-slot Hover
for speed and have Swift, or just be very careful.

Superspeed also works well for a Defender so long as you
do not attack, as you are "invisible until attacking" and
can buff at will.

From that perspective, when you respec, consider
Speed + Concealment pools. Few foes (Snipers in the level
30+ game and archvillians and a few others) can see you,
leaving you able to Buff, Recall Friend, whatever as needed.

Notice that Speed + Concealment + Fitness is already 3
pools, but not a bad set.

Concealment also offers Grant Invisibility. The level 14
concealment power for a superspeed/stealth character isn't
really needed.

You'd want Stealth + Grant Invis (ally buff) + Phase
Shift (panic button for you) later.

So, whether you are the Invisible Healer or the Flying
Healer, either is pretty darn good in battle.

Superspeed may be more powergaming (Hasten lets you
Heal the party faster) but Fly has its own rewards.

At level 17, Swift + Fly (not speed slotted yet; I have
a DO 15 end reducer in there, moving to 20 flight speed once
my contact starts selling non-power10-DOs) has gotten
pretty acceptable. At level 14 it was a bit doggy, though
still useful.

Fly speed automatically increases by character level
without you doing anything, but it probably won't be
uber-fast even at 30th level.

Dunno if you are planning other chars, but you might
try, after respec, Hurdle + SuperSpeed + Stealth and see
if you can't get most places you want to. Even when you
fall into the cracks in Faultline or the Hollows, the
Stealth should mean that you can take your time getting out,
or send a Tell to a teleporter on your team, or invite a
teleporter to your team to pull you out.

Oh, since you can heal yourself, consider this mix for
Fitness: Swift + Hurdle + Stamina. Swift helps cancel out
the Stealth movement penalty, though you may not notice it
as Superspeed is so fast, the relatively minor speed
penalty from Stealth isn't very perceptible to the human
eye.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

ok yet more a bit of the same... ad infinitum, as nauseum.... however... I've had all the powers... with the exception of SJ so I'll give you my 2 cents on them.

Teleport... Cool power... looks great, really fast... TERRIBLE endurance drain... even slotted... and as mentioned above, you've got to have hover to use it safely, you alos have to be careful when tping around higher lvl zones... I've gotten killled by tping down to the ground from high above... can't see the baddies below... land right in a mob... not great for a defender.

I think the only power worth having in this pools is Recall friend... but it seems here recently (at least until the respec came out) everyone had it.

Fly... I personlly love it... when you need a break you can actually be doing something so that your team isn't waiting for your return. I hate it when you fially all make it to a mission and someone goes "bio break!" that's why I have fly... auto pilot! The big downer on it is that at lower lvls it's slower than all the rest and it's the second biggest end. hog... however, after the fitness pool... I can leave fly on and not even notice the difference... But I'm a controller with Emp powers so I usually turn it off...just for the boost.

Now the up side to the other powers in this pool... Hover... if you slot it with defense... and have stamina... it's nice to have on during fights... especially for those of us with lesser HP's... air superiority is nice too... but I rarely see anyone use it.

Super speed... my secondary travel power on my main... an most of my secondaries... Fast, hardly uses any end. but you've got vertical problems.... is nice for short distance travel or street trolling with teams... the stealth bonus is nice... and after stamina, if you can stand the sound, you have leave it on during fights too.

My big pet peeve with SS, apart from the noise, is the lack of vertical lift... if you're speeding along and hit a wall, you've got to hit jump at just the right spot... else you're backing up.... I have hard times using it indoors, and when I first got it had some problems learning how it use it. But not everyone has these problems... could be that I'm just not a super speeder. ;)

For my slots I've got Fly (only 1 slotted with a Single Origin fly speed) and SS (only single slotted with an SO for run speed...) now I do plan on adding at least one more slot to fly... but at the speed it's at now getting to missions makes a great time to run downstairs and grab a drink.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

You can choose them all, if you want. Choose all the ones you want and leave the ones you don't want alone. That's the best answer there is unless you have a specific strategy in mind that you have to work within.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

Your first you get to choose at level 6. You can choose the first or second from any pool. If you have a specific 3rd or 4th level power you want later, pick a 1st or 2nd level one from the same pool. If you don't really care, pick Hover to get to high places early or Recall Friend if you want to make friends early.

The good stuff isn't available until you are 14th level, and you must already have a 1st or 2nd level power from the same pool. For example, if you want Super Jump at 14th level, you have to have already taken Combat Jumping or Hurdle.

As for which one I reccomend, they all have advantages and disadvantages. Read the rest of the thread to learn what they are - I think everyone covered that part really well. If you see something you want to exploit, like the defense bonus from Hover or the ability to target a specific arrival point from Teleport, then pick that power. Otherwise, just pick the one that is the most fun.

I personally prefer Teleport. It isn't as hard to control as some would tell you, if you just get used to the idea of using both hands to control it. (I put it under my 0 key, so it's 0 to activate, mouse to target, 0 to activate, mouse to target, over and over.)

Some people prefer fly because you can take in the scenery better, some because they like shooting from above, and some just because Superman does it.

Others prefer Super Jump because it's fast and it's cheap. I never learned how to do it without landing in a mob, but RonJ swears by it.

Whichever you decide on, just remember to get the lower power by level 12 so you can get the good one at level 14.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

Okay as usual TP gets dissed. I have TP on Doc Vengence the scrapper, Doc Vengeance the Defender and American pulse. At lower levels TP can be a bit taxing and there is definitly skill involved But I love it. At higher levels once Stamina is 6 slotted it's fine, I only have 1 enhancement in the scrapper's TP and he can TP for miles WITH focused senses on. I have 1 end red in it, not 6 slots, it only goes 100yds at a time, but I can easily cross zones. As a scrapper TP foe is nice and as a defender Recall is handy. Doc V the defender has 2 slots of end in TP and can tp long distances with shadow on and have TP'd from FF gate to eden with senses and sprint on. I need to do a test with the toggles off. I had hover on the scrap until L24 or so and dropped it because I didnt need it.

The scrap can TP off of caltrops to an enemy and hit him on arrival. The defender puts tar patch and can wait till a foe is close and TP to the other side cue a blast and turn and hit him upon arrival and wear him down.

I have heroes with SS, SJ and now fly and they all are nice but when you are creative TP can be a great asset and at higher levels the drain is not a major factor.

Anyway TP can be rough at lower levels but at higher it is nice.

Anyway dont discount TP, it can be an awesone travel power.

anyway GL and welcome

Re: Best Travel Powers?

I totally do swear by Super Jump. But it's all personal preference. Super Jump is definitely dangerous, particularly at higher levels, but at low levels it's not too bad. It does suck when you're jumping through a hazard zone and you land in the middle of a big group of Reds or Purples.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

Oh and if you get respec copy your hero to the test server and test drive the traavel powers before you commit see this thread

http://cityofheroes.gameamp.com/forum/showTopic/6356.php

Also TP is much easier with binding which is in another thread

but for TP I think its

/bind T "powexec_name teleport"

but that is from memory

it allows you to hit "t" then click then mouse where you want to go so you dont have to keep clicking on the power tray and then the screen.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

That's why I put it in my main tray, under the 0. No binding needed. You can click on all the powers in your main tray by hitting the number keys. Your second and third trays can be used by holding down the Ctrl or Alt key and pressing the corresponding number.

I've been wondering why you thought you needed to bind to do that. Thanks for clearing that up.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

I dont like to have TP in my tray, long story short I have a pattern that I like my powers in and having TP in the tray doesnt fit that. Also the "t" puts in a place where I can comfortably "steer" with my left hand and still reach it and keep my right hand on mouse. Again not better just my preference.

You may also want to figure out which power fits your character better. Battling is in one hand, and what is a better fit for your toon in the other. I am just saying if your guy's Bio calls for speed then speed is where you may want to look. If you character is based on strength and you out fitted him/her to be hulkish in size then jumping would look cool too.
There are draw backs to which ever powers you choose, but slotted correctly (thank you gameamp) your powers are ultimatly making up the hero you wish to be.
I for one, and I will take a ton on hits on this, like the teleport power, WHY? Because it fits perfectly for one of my characters. Speed, Flight, and Jumping got me to where I need to be, but they just didn't help define my hero like Teleport does. I recommend that you make a couple more characters and try out each of theses powers to find which one suits you best. I have a buddy online that just loves the jumping power, so all of his toons have jumping power.
You may also want to judge what your CPU and Internet connection can handle. Some powers really suck and can get you in some serious damage if your system lags a ton, and yes I will be the first to admit if your system is prone to Lagging, STAY AWAY FROM TELEPORT...just trust me on this...
One last thing, if you get Teleport Friend be ready to TP people on your team, since no matter what power they have nothing is faster then being TP'd directly to the mission, if they are already there. I don't know how many times I have TP'd to the mission and then get requested from Flyers, Jumpers, and Speeders to TP them to the mish, they even wait for me to get to the mish and then ask to TP em. Be perpared to be a Taxi at times. Either way have fun and try out as many powers as you can to see which sets live up to your Hero's rep.

Personally I like the train the best. Nothing gets you faster all the way across Paragon City from Independance port to Talos Island in seconds.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

there are 2 ways to change.

1. At level 24 and up there are "respec" Task Forces. At completion you are able to rechoose the powers in your primary and secondary set as well as pool powers.

2. wait for the release of the next issue/major event. Sometimes you get a free respec, but these are few and far between so not real helpful.

Another option a low levels is just to start again, never fun but as you know the first few levels go quickly so not real bad earl on.

What type of tank are you?

Re: Best Travel Powers?

You can pick your second travel power at 16.
Assume you want Fly and SS, then you can pick hasten at 6, hover at 8, fly at 14 and finally SS at 16.
But you probably want to pick some other powers first.
I am happy with just fly. There are way more important powers to pick then SS or SJ.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

I don't have enough experience with different powers to answer your first question, so I won't even try, but maybe I can clear something up about the second one. At level 6, you may choose the first or second power from the extra pools. Since we're concerned with travel powers, that's what I'll stick to. Suppose that you, at lvl 6, chose hover. I think you said that you did choose that. Now, you can pick Fly at lvl 14, and you know this. At any even numbered level between 6 and 14, you can choose the first or second power from any other travel power pool. Suppose you decided that you wanted SJ. The first two powers in that pool are Jump Kick and Combat Jumping. If you choose one of those two at level 8, 10, or 12, then at 14 you may pick SJ or Fly since you got hover at 6. If you decide that you want SJ at 14, but then decide to get Fly also, you may pick that at 16.

Make sense?

I would reccomend Fly because you already have Hover and its the least waste of power slots for you and its easy to use. Take it as soon as you get 14.

Of course, my own characters get all the TP's as soon as possible, but that's my own pref. You should just go with Fly.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

Agreed. For a new hero, fly is probably the easiest and safest travel power.

Re: Best Travel Powers?

Fly is really fun. It's not the fastest travel power, but it lets you go literally ANYWHERE. You can go to the tops of the highest buildings, wherever you want! Good stuff.
