| CoH Updater Not Connecting |
|
|
|
I am desperately hoping someone, somewhere, somehow can give me some advice!! I have purchased and installed CoH but when I try to run the Updater it just sits there showing 'connecting' with the Internet Explorer 'Page Cannot Be Displayed' background.
I have tried everything I can think of to resolve this (although I may have missed something obvious) but the solution has evaded me for two days now and it's getting annoying!!!
Any advice would be much appreciated!
I have downloaded the alternate Updater from the CoH site and my PC is above the recommended requirements but the sodding thing just will not work!!
Thx
JB

welcome to gameamp!
as far as your problem, i'd say check your firewall and internet settings to see if anything is getting blocked.
i'd also read this thread, i scanned thru it quickly and it looks like there is a lot of good information in there, you'll just have to read thru and pick out what looks good.

Thanks for the reply but - no go!
Have tried deleting the checksum file - no different. Have also downloaded the alternate Updater - this at least now gives me Connecting.. #1,2 etc but still not connecting - also still getting 'Page Cannot Be Displayed' where image should be!
I have no firewalls installed and have turned off Windows firewall so this shouldn't cause problems.

1st off Welcome to the site! Sorry it had to be under such bad circumstances.
There are a couple of things that may be causing this problem. The following two threads have some things for you to check: thread 1 and thread 2. If these don't do it, let us know and we'll see what else we can do.

Thanks for this - after reading the two threads I have now updated my video card drivers. Nothing else really seemed to apply to my problem. My basic system spec if it would be useful is: P4 3.0Ghz; 1Gb RAM; NVidia GeForce 6 256Mb GFX Card; 120Gb available HD space. It still just shows 'Connecting.. #1,2' etc - it go to 94 before I gave up last time - but where there would usually be an image above it I just get the Internet Explorer 'Page Cannot Be Displayed' screen???

This has nothing to do with your video card. Something is blocking the updater from getting an internet connection. Check anything that can block a url, such as your firewall, AV software, popup blocker, etc. Also try adding it to your unrestricted sites list.
If you use Explorer, you can do this by opening your browser, then pulling down the Tools menu. Select Internet Options, click the Security tab, click on the Trusted Sites icon and then Sites, then typing cityofheroes.com into the blank and clicking OK.

do you have any anti-virus software?
I have to turn the personal firewall off on Norton b4 I can connect to updater.
And sometimes I just disable anti-virus all together to play.
Runs smoother when I do

Thanks fpr the advice. I have added cityofheroes.com to the unrestricted sites list, turned off the IE6 popup blocker and have no other AV, Firewall or Popup software installed - still doing the same!
All I want to do is play a little!!!!! Is it really too much to ask!!!!!

Do you have the google toolbar or anything similar? Those sometimes also have built-in popup blockers.
Also check whether cityofheroes.com is on your restricted sites list. If it's on both, the restricted list has precedence.

Sadly there is nothing on the Restricted Sites list and I have no toolbars - they have always proved more trouble than they are worth! ;-)

I agree with that. I don't use any of them, either.
Another possible cause is a trojan downloader. Some hog a ton of bandwidth and are a real pain to get rid of. VX2, for example. This one loads before windows, so not even ad-aware can remove it yet. If you have VX2, CoH will have trouble downloading because the trojan is trying to download fake AV software at the same time.
Which brings up another point. What AV software are you using? There are a lot of phoney ones out there that cause more problems than they solve.

Try these two things if you're still having trouble connecting.
1. Click Start -> Click Run-> Type CMD
2. In the command prompt window type:
ipconfig /flushdns
3. Restart your computer.
Next
1. Click Start -> Click Run-> Type CMD
2. In the command prompt window type:
tracert cohupdate.coh.com
3. If you're not familiar with using trace route take a screenshot of the maximized window displaying the above results, otherwise this should show you where you're problem is.
-To take a screenshot do the following
1. Click start and navigate to -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Paint
2. Minimize Paint and with the Command Prompt window open press Print Screen
3. Finally Maximize Paint again and Press and hold Left Control + V to paste into Paint. Save the file to your desktop, upload it to http://imageshack.us then post the link here.

Never used tracert before so screenshot has been uploaded here - hope it makes more sense to you than it does to me - although there isn't a lot to it!!

Oh yeah - sorry - am not using any AV at the moment - I uninstalled it earlier today to see if it resolved anything!
have been using Norton Antivirus 2005 Pro though and Zonealarm firewall.

That IP is invalid. Something is routing you to the wrong IP. I don't know you you managed 30 hops, though. When I tried to trace it, I was timed out on the 13th hop.

I tried pinging that IP and it came back ncsoft.com.
On a DNS query, it comes back "Domain does not exist."
That makes it sound like your updater is trying to update from an old update URL which has changed. I don't know why NCSoft would do this, though.
This would be the kind of problem which downloading a new updater should fix. First, delete your updater and remove it from the registry (preferably with a registry cleaner application, not manually). Next, make sure you are downloading a new updater from NCSoft, not a 3rd party.

Any idea where I can get a new updater from?? The one I am using was downloaded following advice from another forum - link is:
ftp://client.coh.com/US/CohUpdater.exe
The updater that was installed with the game itself does even less than this one!!!
(If that's possible!)

That is what I mean by a 3rd party. You need one from NCSoft.

I'm looking for it now. I can't find one for the regular updater and the one for the EU updater is not available.
Have you managed to at least download the updates after you installed the game?

It seems others are experiencing a related problem lately. You might want to monitor this help topic and possibly ask them about code 65, as well as whether this can affect CoH.

Yeah its the regestry file showing you an invalid update server IP
To fix (hopefully) do the following:
1. Click Start -> Click Run-> Type REGEDIT
2. Browse to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER /SOFTWARE /CRYPTIC /COH/
3. In the Filed to the Right find the AUTH key, right click on it and select modify.
4. Enter:
216.107.249.131
5. Click OK, close Regedit and try the updater again.
Also see if you can view this page in your web browser:
http://www.coh.com/updater/live.html
If not try using tracert again and post the result using this ip: 216.107.249.131
