Ice tanks...are they really that bad??

Topic speaks for itself. I don't see many ice tanks in game. Mostly I see Invulnerability and Stone tanks. Just wondering how they do in higher lvls. Maybe ice was a bad choice??

RE: Ice tanks...are they really that bad??

My honest opinion here....

Ice used to be the worst. Not anymore, for sure. Defence actually means you have a lot less chance of getting hurt now, unlike before.

Having said that, Ice seems to me like a tank of a whole different kind of breed.

Fire tanks have really good damage resistance

Invuln have a mixture of extra hit points, good damage resistance and good defence.

Stone, well, they just can't be killed once they hit lvl 32 (unless attacked by psionic). Of course, they can't really kill much themselves either...

Ice seems to come at things from an entirely different angle, which to me seems really intreging (spelling?). They have good defence, but at the same time they have a lot of controllish kind of powers and the extra hit point thing too. Kinda odd. Like for instance, they have a toggle (chilling embrace) that slows everyone around them to a standstill pretty much. So, who needs great damage resisitance if all the baddies are too cold to shoot at you? Or if you suck all the endurance out of them, they can't attack you can they?

So, in answer to your question, no they do not suck. But don't try one if you don't know what you're doing.

Now pony up some cred for me, I wanna break 200! :-)

RE: Ice tanks...are they really that bad??

i just hit 26 with my ice/ice tank last night and i'm sure the other members of the alliance can verify this, but i dont die, ever.

if you are going to make an ice tank, i whole-heartidly suggest taking ice as your secondary as well.

chilling embrace is an unbelievable power. its an AoE taunt around you. any villain that runs thru it will immediately turn and run back towards you. it also slows them down to a crawl. they cant run away and their powers recharge very very slowly.

probably the best power that helps keep you alive is ice patch. you can jump in the middle of any mob, and if you time it properly, they don't get their alpha strike off and just start to fall down repeatedly. with no enhancements, it has about a 7 second down time. with a level 20 DO, it was down to about 1.5 seconds down time. if they cant stand up they cant hit you.

i made an ice tank because you hardly see any. but i couldnt be happier with it now.

Lots of help guys, thanks. I'll be keeping my ice tank, as of so far I have had fun playing him, only lvl 12, but still been fun. He's still a little soft in the middle, but I hope that changes as he levels up.

RE: Ice tanks...are they really that bad??

Well I have a LvL 25 Ice/SS tank and he is pretty fun to play now, but b4 I5 I had almost deleted him because he was getting worked all the time in the Hollows levels. I just left him alone for a while and started back up just recently and his armor is pretty good.

RE: Ice tanks...are they really that bad??

I came to check out this topic because I've teamed with an Ice/Ice tank.

Big's Ice/Ice is insane. You have to understand that he doesn't...DOES NOT...die. He can hold crazy aggro and just take it like the man that he (thinks he) is. First thing I look for when I'm logged in with my lvl 23 Def is to see if Big is on. Cause I squishy guy and Big....well Big just isn't.

Not Really

Hmmm...Now lets see. I have a lvl 50 stone/ss tank and after lvl 32 he was unstoppable. In fact..i didnt die till i reached mid 40s and battled Mayhem with all that flipping psi.

Now I have a 27 Ice/Ice tank and the tactics are completely different. You wont be able to just jump into the middle of a angry mob and last as long as Granite tanks. Take fighting pool to get tough. This will help alot

My main tactic is to do a corner pull w/taunt. Break line of sight then drop your ice patch...with chilling embrace, icicles, and energy absrobtion you should kick arse as long as your team mates do their jobs. Only troller tank out there. [/FONT]

RE: Ice tanks...are they really that bad??

thank you path for that wonderful testimony. you're influence is in the mail ;)

and with my ice tank, i just run and try and jump in the exact middle of any mob then drop ice patch. even if they get the alpha off, its not enough to kill me and once ice patch is down, they DONT attack!

them not attacking = me not dying

now, i will convene that these are not orange, red and purple mobs, because most of the time i play with everyone who is my level or a tad lower. but they are yellows and oranges for the most part. if i could dish out damage, i would fight higher level mobs, but i am getting my second attack at 26 so oranges dont bother me yet.

and i stole the avitar out of the private gallery of the resident fetisher of death.

RE: Ice tanks...are they really that bad??

Ice tanks are the bomb, having taken mine to 50 I can verify its staying power, I run into only one problem when using it, many players do not consider the differences between tanks and as such think all Tanks shouls have the same strats.

This "They all are the same" mentality must end, a player who has gotten to a high level with a tank knows it well, if he tells you how he's going to do something, take that into account before you act.

Anywho back to the topic, there arent many Ice Tanks BECAUSE there aren't many people who want to experiment, they follow the cookie cutter recipe and create a Tank based on anothers build that they know works.

I had no conception of what worked or not when I made mine, I just chose powers that sounded good, and I made a good decision... If you havn't tried an Ice Tank do so if for no other reason then to experience the rush it is :)

RE: Ice tanks...are they really that bad??

i just got another little tid-bit about ice/ice tanks.

DO NOT TAKE FROST!

ok take it if you really want, but let me give my reasonings for absolutely hating this attack.

1. it's a cone attack. ok, cone = kinda AoE attack so that should help me hold aggro. NO! IT DOES NOT DO THAT! well, ice tanks dont really need attacks to hold aggro, your primary powers should do that, but i digress.

2. it is the SHORTEST and NARROWEST cone attack i've ever seen. you have to be within MELEE range to use it and it NEVER gets past the target, ok maybe it did hit 2 people once or twice. yeah i know, the set is ice melee, but you breathe frosty air on the baddies, which doesnt scream melee to me.

3. its an endurance monster. i'm at level 26 with stamina 2 slotted with 25 SOs. i run 4 toggles in battle all the time (ice armor, chilling embrace, icicles, and my wet ice). frost takes huge chunks of endurance and i constantly have to pop blues to keep my shields up.

if you do get it, slot it with end redux fast, and i'd suggest at least 2 end reduxs. but i'm so annoyed with the power, i'm using my free i7 respec to drop it and pick up ice sword.

and i take back my previous comments about glacial ice. you're much better off using inspirations until later on. I'm respecing this armor out until mid to late 30s or early 40s.

Hero Planner lists the attack as a 7-degree cone - that is indeed pretty narrow. Range is 10.

RE: Ice tanks...are they really that bad??

I have found that ice is very endo heavy, so I usually don't do much attacking, unless I HAVE too. At low levels I'm able to hold agro like a mother with out throwing a punch. With chiling embrace on, even if another team mate attacks the enemy wont even look in that team mates direction. I took frost for an attack and you just need to line yourself to the enemies to make it more effective. Just my two cents that I have noticed while playing one so far.

I was thinking about creating a ice/ice tank, but the attacks don't seem worth it, the shields as they are labeled sound very good but the attacks not so much

One question:
Are ice tanks good for herding?

yes. you will need taunt to help herd though. i think the max you can herd at once is maybe 10. so taunt will grab that extra 5 or so.

I know that Stone is the only armor with defense again psionic attacks, so is this a problem for the other armors like ice when they finally come across enemies that use psionic attacks?

Though the armours will let you down as far as Psi is concerned, I doubt the rest of the set will. Though I don't have an ice tank of my own, from the descriptions here it looks like a lot of the set is focussed towards stopping the enemy attacking you. And if they aren't attacking you, they can't damage you. Whether you have defence against their attacks or not.

And most stone tanks don't bother with their Crystals armour (the one which gives resistance to psionics). When they get it, in the 20s, not many enemies use psionic attacks. There are a few, but not many. And once they get to the late 30s and 40s, when psionic attacks are abundant, they already have their Granite Amour. None of the stone tanks I have teamed with drop granite to defend against psionic attacks, because they would more than likely get mauled. Though it gives res to psi, I don't think it is extremely good, and their other armours don't come up to par with granite.

So even though stone does have defence against psi, the other sets don't really suffer fropm lack of it.

RE: Ice tanks...are they really that bad??

the ice primary doesnt deal out great damage at all, but like someone said before, it helps to keep you from getting hit. Ice patch at 20 or 22 and freezing touch at 28 are great powers to help your cause. if freezing touch doesnt actually freeze them, it deals a great deal of DoT compared to the rest of the attacks. As long as you survive the alpha of a mob, you will be fine and should hardly get hit. I usually run in, drop ice patch and then if i get whacked hard, shoot up with some hoarfrost and have zero problems surviving the rest of the fight. the only times i have died were because someone was talking to me in RL and i wasnt paying attention to what i was doing. I got the first debt badge at 31, and that's only because i died purposely a few times when i was exempted to get it. the ice primary is the perfect compliment to ice armor.

Well i've just made a fire/ice tank and have to say he is bloody awesome! havent really got far enough into him to give any sage advice but i can say the offensive set on ice is really effective but very endo heavy.

also dunno if anyone else said it but.... welcome to the site Brickhous!

Ice Tanks are in a league of their own!!

First off, Thank you for warm welcome Valentine. Now, i made a earlier post about ice tanks when mine was lvl 25 ish. Now he is 34.5. Must have powers are enegy absorbtion(3 rech-3 def), hoarfrost (3 rech-3heal), Hibernate (2 rechg thus far), chilling embrace (3 slow- 3 taunt), and ice patch (2 rechg).

Now, after lvl 32, my ice tank on Triumph- Blizz Hard, has truly come into his own. Before I jump into a mob or herd, I pop hoarfrost then let chilling embrace taunt for me. The way i have CE slotted the mobs completely ignore everyone else and stick to me. Then if i start to take too much punishment, I simply hibernate on my ice patch. When I break free, hoar frost is ready again. And so the cycle continues.I have also dipped into the fighting pool for tough which helps. But all must remember 1 thing..not all tanks are created equal..it is up to the tank to communicate to the team because he should know what his tank can take and do. One love.

BLIZZ!!! It's Big the Tank! Wow i'm glad you found the site!

if anyone needs a tank and i'm not available, look up blizz-hard. another great tanker!

brik i just have a few comments on your slotting. i'm still at 32, but i want to ask about energy absorption. why didnt you slot any endmod enhancements into it? i use it mostly for an endurance replentish mid-battle. I think right now I have 1 rechg and 1 endmod in it. I'll probably go 2-2-2 and add 2 def to it. I've been able to overlap ice patch at times with just a single SO in it for rechg. you could probably save the slot for somewhere else.

I have a lvl 15 ice/ice tank named Ice puppy on triumph that I run. So far hes a bit of an end hog, but the aggro he attracts. . . oh man that chilling embrace rocks! It aggros the baddies to you alot better i think than invincability. I really enjoy playing him and i cant wait to see how his powers evolve.

Energy Absorbtion slots

Whats happening Big..Been lookin for you on triumph bro. Thx for compliment..You are a outstanding tank yourself. Now with energy absorbtion, i chose to go with 3 recgh and 3 def because 9 times out of ten i have 10 to 15 enemy around me. When i hit EA, the end gain is great already w/o endo modification..so we as Ice tanks need slots where they help us most..defense. And 3 rechg so that EA comes back in no time..i can have EA doubled up in long fights. And if my endo goes below quarter, i pop hibernate to refresh. Works great thus far. Link me up Big..till next time.

RE: Ice tanks...are they really that bad??

Ice is not bad at all. If you are searching out for a certain pool to use and cannot decide, try using this method. What would you like, in real life, to do with your enemies? Would you like to burn them alive and watch them suffer (Fire)? Would you like to freeze them, make them shiver and laugh at them while they pretend to be Han Solo in carbonite (Ice)? Do you want to smash their faces in with bricks and heavy objects (stone)? Would you rather pound their faces in with fistfulls of light that would make a acid-tripped raver become more disoriented than ever (energy)? Do you see yourself on a medieval battlefield swinging an axe or a heavy mace into the skulls of your enemy (axe and mace)? Or would you rather just beat the living hell out of them and enjoying the fact that you never seen so many people knocked into the air (Super Strength)?

Just basically, pick something you enjoy, rather than what is supposedly "good". Because, even though most people like the Superman types with Invulnerability and Super Strength and do a good beatdown, it might not be necessarily enjoyable to you. Whats the point of going to 50 with something you don't enjoy?

Also, if that doesn't help you, try to make a story or make sense of your powers. Such as, if I wanted to be a lava elemental, i would choose Stone Armor and Fire Attacks, or vice versa. It gives your character clarity and a direction to move in.

I hope I've helped in any way those who are sitting on the fence and cannot decide.

Hibernate...What does this power actually do? Can you move? Can you still attack? Do you loose all the aggro you build up? Do your other toggles drop?

hibernate is a life saver!

i was considering respecing it out until yesterday while fighting mary macomber.

when you activate hibernate, you basically freeze yourself in a solid block of ice. very similiar looks to freezing touch (tanks) or block of ice (trollers) power. you cannot affect anything around you while frozen, but your health and end regenerate very quickly. yes, you do lose aggro, but for the 10-20 seconds you are in it, its not bad. your toggles do not drop so you don't have to worry about that when you come out of it.

it is extremely useful when fighting higher level villains (orange, red and purps).

my regular initial aggro sequence is to run in and pop energy absorption to build up my defense and aggro the mob to me, lay down ice patch next to the highest rank villain in the mob, then if need be i pop hoarfrost for more defense and health. this normally lets me fight and keep aggro throughuot the battle. if i find myself losing health or end rapidly still, i hit my HIBERNATING bind and freeze into it. i think it only lasts 30 seconds if you dont manually shut it down, but you usually dont need to stay in it that long even.

if you are fighting whites and yellows with the occasional orange boss, you might not need to take it. your other powers should suffice. but if a lot of your missions seem to be grapey, i'd suggest it.

and brikhous can back up these statements. he's another good tanker with an icey around 35.
