A Wizard's Staff has a knob on the end...

Could someone in the know help me out a bit, please? My roomie accidentally got rid of our magestaff, and I can't trade a new one across from another wizard. So now I'm kind of screwed, and wondering if anyone can tell me what some decent options are.

I'm a lvl 5 wizard, and I have a fair bit of coin. Is there any static treasure that has a staff I can quest for? Is there another magestaff I can purchase?

Anything?

:)

All advice is greatly appreciated!

RE: A Wizard's Staff has a knob on the end...

Alas, the Magestaff is only avail at creation and cannot be traded ( bind on aquire ). However, Water Works a decent end-loot staff. I think STK may as well. The WW staff is called the Meltwood Staff, and has 3 uses of Melf's Acid Arrow per-rest. I think the STK staff summons a Scorpion at least once per rest, maybe more.

At higher levels, South Threnal also as a Staff as end reward, but I'm on vacation & don't have an easy way to check it's stats.

For purchace, check the vendors in the tent & House D. True, they won't be able to bump up the damage on your 1st level spells across the board, but you may find some that amp up spells of a certain type ( combustion = fire damage, impulse = force damage, etc ). Or, look into a nice elemental staff ( acid, frost, ect ) as a backup if you need to melee... and I love to cast Hold and rack up the melee damage to get kills w/o a lot of spellpoint-burn. :)

I hope this answers your question. If not, I'll try to answer it more compleatly when I get back from vacation next week.

Yeah aside from the mission runs that give end staffs that aren't to shabby, maybe like a quarter staff of power or something might work for you too.

RE: A Wizard's Staff has a knob on the end...

Okay, you destroyed your staff, so what exactly did you loose? Well, the staff gives you 20% increase damage to all your 1st level spells. Hmmm, this means Burning Hands, Chill Touch, Magic Missle, Shocking Grasp and Sound Burst. Of these, Magic Missle is the most important as it bypasses magic resistance (not even the dragon can resist its damage), although I do still use Burning Hands in specific instances.

So, the question is, how do you replace the loss of your 20% damage bonus? Your answer may not be a replacement staff. For example, I have a Helm of Improved Impulse I. This gives me a permanent 30% damage increase to Magic Missle. For Bosses I use the Potion of Superior Impact I which delivers a 30 second 50% damage increase to Magic Missle. BTW, these bonuses do stack with your Enhancement bonuses.

Eventually, you may find yourself questing to fight the red dragon herself. In VoN 4 I believe, there is a wonderful staff that drops which delivers a host of electrical bonuses including Greater Magnetism III, a permanent 40%, but I use the Azure Neckless of Prophecy (from the dragon chest) with a Superior Magnetism III.

My point is, there are many items that far exceed your loss, but its important to know what you are looking for. So, best of luck on your future chest lewt... and one last piece of advice: I recommend not selling all your best non-wizard lewt so that you can trade.

There is also a staff at the end of tangleroot. It allows you to cast summon monster III 3 times a day. I love it for my 5th level wizard. Most Party's love it because it adds a extra tank of sorts to the party. I love it because it frees up an extra spell slot at 3rd level.

I heartily agree with Mananan.
I do have to say that selling your items in the right place will get you more money. If you simply sell you items to any vendor, you won't get as much as you would for selling at on of the pawn shops (Item specific shops, typically in the individual houses). If you are going to sell say armor, you would make more if you sold it in Second Hand Gauntlet (make sure you equip your best haggle item and cast a charisma buff on yourself). Individual House Favor gained through completing quests will decrease the amount you have to pay for stuff.
The auction is another place to get more bang for your buck. This is the E-Bay of DDO. You will consistently sell for more there than anywhere else, considering the item does sell.
Best of luck!
