Secondary Vs. Low Hit Points

Alright I play a lot of CoV and my main toon is a lvl 41 corruptor, and I know that he is squishy. Which brings me to my question. As a blaster, your secondary powers offer you a few melee attacks. With blasters also having low hit points I wonder why this is. Now I'm also wondering if this is a good idea for a blaster.

Well, I would say yes. Being a high damagae dealer, you're bound to eventually draw some kind of aggro at some point. I like to carry a melee attack just for those close range situations when all my other skills are recharging. Right now, I'm using Air Superiority for the knock down when they get close too close. When they come up to me to say hi, I just whack 'em once, then back off to put some room between me and him.

RE: Secondary Vs. Low Hit Points

I have just spent a good amount of time reading through the Blaster Power Sets. Most of the Secondary attacks offer another effect other than damage. Example is Bone Crusher from the Energy Secondary Set. It has a high chance at Disorienting your target.

I can see where it would be strange to offer such Powers to a Ranged Archetype, but you do need something to protect yourself with when a enemy gets close.

Unless your like me and take the Melee attacks to make your Blaster a Blapper. I wouldn't want my toon any other way.

Anyways my main point was the effects that are offered with the attacks. There is usually something in there that will allow you to get out of Melee range.

I know they are offered, but I personaly haven't taken any of the melee attacks. The only attacks I use from my secondary are the ones that make the bad guy stay away from me. And I have ranged on all my primary. I don't want anyone in melee range of me... they hurt when they are close.

First, I'll start by establishing the purpose of blasters...
No, it's not to do JUST ranged damage... It's to do high damage at any cost. Blaster secondaries do high damage. They also usually have secondary effects that help dispatch your enemies(Stun, Slow, End Drain, etc). Oh and let's not over look the fact that blaster secondaries contain the majority of the auto toggle droppers.

Now that I established what blasters do, I'll move on to your question... It's all about Risk v Reward. Normally, the higher the risk, the greater the reward. This is evident in the exp sysytem. When you solo enemies, you get more exp. By soloing, you put yourself in a more dangerous situation but are rewarded with a higher amount of exp. This also applies to damage. Blasters, believe it or not, do a higher percent of damage with melee attacks(Read it somewhere on the official forums... can't remember the exact percent). They have to do more damage or people wouldn't use them.

So... Are melee attacks a good idea for blasters? A bblaster's main purpose is to do damage. Melee attacks do more damage than ranged ones do. So yes, melee attacks ARE a good idea for blasters. This is can be shown by going into any PvP zone and fighting a blaster. I guarentee you it's not gonna be their ranged attacks that annoy you... it'll be their melees.

RE: Secondary Vs. Low Hit Points

i am currently making a blapper, elec/energy, and the damage difference from primary to secondary is ver noticable. i only have one ranged attack, and it does minimal damage, but energy punch will knock off a white minion to 10% of their health. now THAT is a punch

Yeah. Between Energy Punch, Bone Smasher, and Total Focus, your enemies don't stand a chance. And I'm guessing you went elec/ for Tesla Cage. Good hold power to keep um in place while you melee um.

RE: Secondary Vs. Low Hit Points

I just started a Sound/Energy blapper, and the res lowering effect combined with the damage from the melee is amazing.

For level 6 anyway. If I pop build-up and the energy punch I can drop a white minion, and Build Up-Scream-Energy Punch-Power Thrust took out an Eidolon my level. I just can't wait for Bone Smasher.

RE: Secondary Vs. Low Hit Points

Also something to note, Blasters had an HP table revamp in the distant past.

Only Tankers, Brutes, and Scrappers (and Dwarves) have more HP now. This was the best part of the infamous defiance patch.

And yes, blasters melee damage table is significantly higher than their ranged. Infact, this is the only way their single target damage can be competitive with a scrappers, as ranged alone won't even come close.

That's why blasters take them.

RE: Secondary Vs. Low Hit Points

The damage that most blasters do is insane. I have a 44 energy/energy blaster, and the damge I do with him is sick. While the range attacks I use can drop a minion one lvl above me in a few attacks, my melee does it in two. (I have to respec him again to get rid of stun). Though they aren't mandatory, the melee attacks that are offered in most blasters secondaries help a great deal and add self defense to an artillary battery. Plus they make excellent finishing moves.[/H1]
