Yep, that's the same thing that happened to me. To get into the game took about 8k files and to load a new town took me about 800-1k files

That's the funny thing about it. Arenanet says it's a dial-up friendly game... which in gameplay it is. But if you get the game now you have to load tons of updates and files just to enter a city... which could take over two hours I've seen.

Yeah, but there'S no way to change it, I guess. Cause with all those updates til now, ANet would have to print new, up-to-date CDs for all games so people can always install the (full) game. And that would cost quite much.
Luckily I'm not on dial-up, so it all loads pretty fast.
And yeah, those 8k files seem to be normal, had that too, when I first played GW.

You could always try downloading the GW client direct from the GW website. I presume that would be pretty up-to date and would save time on having to download all the up-dates!
I may be wrong, but it may be worth a try next time someone has to re-install!!

But, the client doesn't include all the game files, does it? Those still have to be downloaded (what is done by the game itself). Otherwise the client would be a file of approx. 1GB or more and that would still take its time to download.

You'd have to still download the areas, but i presume all the updates regarding skills and all that would be included!

But downloading the areas is what takes so long!

Yeah, some added skills and so would take only take some bytes. These could be added to the client without problems/major increases in download times. But those 8k files for the areas would still be there and if they make any updates regarding the landscape/monsters etc, those wouldn't be included in the client downloadable from the website.
So, I guess the only way to solve this is get a faster connection^^
