Your Soul match Archetype....

In as few words as you can, explain your comfort zone as to archetype. I started a Controller and a Blaster before I realized I was born to be a Tanker. What gets you the biggest kick as far as roles?....

I'm a tank, mostly because they are usually the silent healer on a team, causing Injury to never even happen, if everything is working, it's a huge rush.

Time to chime in with your story...

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

Blaster all the way! I've created a few other characters than my main. But when ever I play them I just want to shoot stuff. I long to whip out my gun and shoot the bad guy. I don't think I've ever played another AT for longer than an hour at a time because of this.

Maybe it is the gun... maybe it is the full auto, what ever it is, blasters are a blast to play!

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

I'm with you Mari...

I started with a rad/rad thinking I really wanted to be a "healer" so to speak... but she didn't last. Then I made my troller and that gave me a little more of what I wanted but when I got to hight levels I wasn't doing the thing I was dying to do...... my job had been replaced by tanks.

I think of tanking as pre-emptive healing. If I'm the one taking all the aggro and all the damage, well then we don't really need a healer now do we?

Yep, I still like my troller and my blasters for different reasons but in my heart of hearts.... I'm a tank through and through. ;)

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

My first toon was a Defender, because I like to help other people with healing and buffs, but I also like to be able to dish out some damage, too.

After a while, I started trying out all the different powersets just to see what they were like and learned a lot about what else I could do. I eventually settled down on Controllers, for the same reasons I originally picked Defenders.

My favorite builds are a cross-class type, called Deftrollers. I like to have a wide variety of things I can do to fix whatever goes wrong with a battle. If that means people need healing, I can do that. If it means putting holds on the runners, stopping the Embalmed from exploding, making the Sorceror stay put or buffing my friends, I can do that, too.

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

I really can't say which is my favorite AT. I guess I need to feel I am contributing to the team, so prefer Tanks, Defenders and Controllers over Blasters or Scrappers. Even when I am playing a corrupter I spend more of my time zipping around buffing everyone. Though this is mainly becuase a serious lack of endurance means I have to ration attacks, the concept stands.

Though Scrappers and Blasters do contribute a hell of a lot (the mobs would never die without em) I prefer to see the fruits of my labour in the way the battle shapes out and in the health bars of my allies.

tanks ftw.

i played football for 10 years at guard and tackle for all of my teams and i was all conference in college so a tank to me is just like an offensive lineman. keeping the bad guys away from your squishy quarterbacks.

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

Hmmm...

I wonder which one I will choose...

I would have to say TANKER. No... wait... I only have one of those and he is only level 7.

*goes and checks the servers...*

Seeing that I have an Empathy Defender on each of the servers, I will go with Healer.

I really enjoy being the healer on the team. It is a joy to be able to watch a hero take a huge hit and start running away, hit them with an absorb pain, and watch them turn right back around and jump back in. I like to throw the buffs and heals over everyone. When I am not playing one of my healers, I notice I still think like a healer. I will be running through a zone and see another hero with some low health. I will run over to them and then realize all I can do is watch. I can't heal right now...argh!

With that being said, Sometimes I love running with my Spines/Regen Scrapper. It is just fun to land in the middle of a group with Quills and set off a Spines Burst. There is stuff flying everywhere.

Of course watching the bad guys fly all over the place getting hit with my energy/energy blaster is awesome also.

So... I guess I have to go with my final answer of...

Hello, I am SwissArmy, I am an Alt-aholic.

My main is a blaster, I love the damage and I still have fun playing him although he has reached level 50. I have tank and scrapper toons as well and I like playing them. I am not very good at playing defenders or controllers, unfortunately.

I am a blaster all the way. I have made other ATs but I always drift back to my blasters. Once I get Zapp (or other sniper shots) and aim and build up I love the one shot drop from a long way out.

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

My main is a Eng/Eng Blaster. I have taken him to 50 and he is the first and ONLY Blaster I have made. I really enjoyed playing him, but I realized along the way that my play style involved being up close. I made him into a Blapper.

Now I find myself making Tanks and Scrappers. I have 3 Tanks and 2 Scrappers. These seem to fit me a little better. I enjoy going in first and making sure that noone else gets killed.

I have recently started playing a Dark/Dark Defender. Which I am suprised by how much I like it. So far it has been fun debuffing the hell out of everything around me. I have a Illusion/Storm controller that I don't much. I can't get into playing it.

So to answer the question I would have to say...... Tank.

Taekwon! fellow martial artist! being myself 6th dan in the art (and 2nd dan Hapkido) I share your views about scrappers.

INV/SS tankers gives me almost the same fun when I add kick and jumping kick to them (just for ''kicks'' pun intended) because of their heroic sacrifice for others, standing there to get blasted while the others are safe hammering away the opposition (along with you).

But... there is no thrill like legsweeping (dragon tail) a mob, sidekicking (crane kick) away the lieutenant while giving the boss' face the taste of a jumping turn back kick (eagle claw) before flipping back on your feet... while being shot-blasted-clobbered-hypnotized by the rest!

As you can see, I too like to be in the thick of it. Defenders are fine (especially the rads and darks)but not enough up front for my taste. Controllers are all great characters but their action is way to much in the background for me: I get bored after a while of just holding them there while team mates might die to protect me. Same with blasters (although, for some inexplicable reason, I love the Ice one); fighting at a distance, especially when you get real powerful, seems strangely unfair to me (try figuring out why; I can't).

Like you, my personal background may be influencing my choices (over 30 years of martial arts certainly do).

I always prefered Spider-Man to all other heroes because, not only is he spectacular, but, despite his amazing powers, he's as vulnerable to a single knife or bullet wound as much as anybody. (yeah I like Batman too for the same reasons but I don't relate as much with psychotic millionaires).

So I would say: with great power comes great responsibility; and with great risk comes great fun!

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

I'm a control freak in all aspects of my life. If I can't hold the reigns, then it isn't worth my time. Guess which AT I like? :P

Controllers are my favorite for a couple of reasons: 1. I get to manipulate the baddies. 2. I can do a little of everything.

There's nothing like watching a LT or boss try to run away after a thorough beating, and you lock him down before he can scamper off. Another rush is dropping multiple AoE holds/slows on a giant mob and watching your team realize that we're in constant control of every target.

The AT is probably the most well rounded of the lot. When you combine your primary and secondary sets, you can do everything from tanking to healing. What other character type lets you drop pets, debuff bosses, and heal teammates without relying on auxillary power pools?

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

Hmm...what could my fav archetype be....(taps chin in puzzling thought)....oh yes Scrapper...to be specific a MA/SR scrapper. My very 1st character was a defender and I found out I was about as good defender as screen doors as jail cell doors. I turned him into a wannabe blaster and found out shortly that it wasnt very good....support player I am not...in the mix of the battle duking it out with the villain I am.

You need a scrapper of the bestest variety then you got me. Ask me to heal you and I will throw bandaids at you. I have tried every class but found I love the scrapper the best. Currently attempting to retry a defender and once again Im playing him as a blaster but this time Im using Kinetics so its not as bad as a dark/dark defender.

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

BLASTER! Specifically my Electric Blaster.

I've personally been electrocuted about 5 times and one REALLY good one(PM me if you want the whole story). It's almost a running gag with my friends. If there is an electrical discharge to be had, I usually end up getting it. That, and for some reason I give the best static ear shocks of anyone I know!

I love the light show and the damage.

I do still gravitate to ranged characters on my alts. I have Blasters everywhere, and 3 on my main server home Liberty that all get played. Even when I play my Fire/Kin/Fire Troller I love to run in, Fulcrum Shift and then Fireball the mob as I'm backpeddaling. Still playing like a Blaster!

All of my Defender attempts have failed because because I try to build them up as Blaster light and get dissapointed.

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

i am a man of many ATs.
personally...
although i dont really have one of these...
i would have to say Scrapper.

my reasons, despite the fact that i dont really have one:

my tank, when i pulled him back off the shelf after i6, and found that his defenses sucked, i went with a scrank mode of play, and found it very enjoyable.

now i play mostly on my PB, which is mostly scrapper powers (the two melee are the only attacks that really do alot of damage, to those without one), and totally love that job.

These types of characters arent the only ones i can play. i have a lvl 33 healer on the shelf right now, and i enjoy him alot. blasting is great, but normally with blasters i get too sidetracked with different themes and playing the secondary effects too much. the end result is very controller-like, and does almost no damage. if i could force myself to play a blaster for the damage, im sure i would excel at it and have a blast.

when i finally started playing demos like he was a tank (which he is LOL) i really got along with that stykle of play. its good to contribute to the team, and since i kept one attack (energy transfer, 3 recharge 3 damage) i feel like im killing more than enough to solo.

controllers, i have never gotten one past lvl 6 and didnt really like them too much.

Thanks to Death Fetish for kicka$$ siggy!!!

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

As for me I throw my lot in with the tanks. The ability to plow into mobs that other people think is suicide is such a rush. Being a father I have something of a paternal instinct about the team I get in to protect and i'll protect them with my life.

Ive tried other AT's, I simply cant run controllers and scrappers. Scrappers do fine damage but not enough armor for my tastes. Blasters and defenders arnt bad and I run with groups just fine with those. But I have to admit theres nothing quite like a tank.

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

Ya know, I'm gonna be the opposite of many people here...

I started off the game waaaaaay back when in the pre-order headstart days by making 1 of each type on a different server. After a short while, I picked my Tanker (Gryken; Invuln/Fire Tank) to be my main (on Protector). Its a great AT to pick to learn the game, because you've got the most HP and its easier to pick up on powers, assignments, etc when you're the one living through all the battles. I got many compliments on him for my tanking abilities. I got to about level 13 when I just lost interest. I mean, it was cool being up in the front of everything, "leading" the team if you will by being the damage taker, and always being in the action, but something was missing. I longed to do damage and be more than a glorified punching bag. I felt great keeping the team alive and whatnot, but it also just didn't suit my solo needs either. It just took too long. Eventually, I started leaning more towards my Blaster (Vince Voltage) on Infinity. I just love being the heavy hitter on the team. There's nothing like taking down white conned enemies in one shot (well, you used to be able to, before I6 and ED; damn devs).

I love my Blasters. My 2nd choice is a tossup between Scrappers and non-Empathy Defenders. I can't deal with being on teams where I heal as best I can and people die; you're the first one to be blamed. Well its not my fault if the Blaster sits right behind the Tank and uses "Brawl" half the time. I like my Force Field Defender (Empress D on Infinity), because I can still concentrate on doing damage in the battles and bubbles are just a 2nd thought after each group.

I love all characters and types though. There's just times when only 1 AT will do when you're in a certain mood. I am an Alt-Aholic to the EXTREME. I've got 52 characters on 8 different servers (I don't have any on Victory, Guardian, or Protector). I spend almost all my time on Triumph, Infinity, & Justice (but Liberty & Freedom are providing me with some fun Alt groups).

Anyways, I'm a Blaster at heart. When I'm not blasting, I like to use my FF Defender above all other ATs. (1=Blaster 2=Defender 3=Scrapper 4=Controller 5=Tanker). I haven't gotten to 50 yet, so I haven't been able to play the Kheldians yet.

(And honestly, after all that, I really prefer MMs on the Villain side above all else, Heroes included. There's just nothing that matches leading your own small army around the place all the time. Hehe.)

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

I feel kinda silly with my decision...illusion/kinetics controller. Not the best holds, but great pets and combined with hasten and 2-3 siphon speeds they come back fast. And then kinetics because it has a little of EVERY defender primary, mixed in with the natural controller pets. Who doesn't love the endurence bonus of speed boost whil giving an extra 20 something percent damage? Or thowring your powers out faster with that damage? And lets not forget that illusion is a little like a blaster with two attacks that you can combine with containment and that extra damage (22ish%)

Next I have to say blaster, when I don't F them up.it's great to sit back and shoot the hell out of something while it's like "WTF IS THAT, OOWWWWWWWW, AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH" if not then its "Argggg, stupid puny blaster, DIE!!!!!!!!!!"

3rd comes to a defender. Combining the secondaries of controllers to a higher level and the primaries of blasters, well some, as a seconddary. Heck you can even have two pets as a defender in your primary and secondary. Black (or is it dark?) servant and volatic sentinel. I didn't say both the pets were any good...

4th I think would go to tank. I'm able to trick my self that taking damage is helping the team like a trollers secondaries. But then i see that I dont get hurt nearly as much and I love it. I only wish thier was more tanker primaries to express or find out...

5th is scrapper with the dark defense to everything or bieng able to regerate damage like wolverine is great but You just can't take a hit like a tank. Granted you can beat the S#@$ out of things much better.

6th is a warshade and now that i condider it they are probably 4th beacuse they are like some of a dark defender, scrapper and dark tank all put together. And I love thier blaster-ish-ness better than peacebringers. Now if only thier tp was like the actual tp.

7th unfortunatly is the peacebringer. I haven't played one but my friend tells me that after lvl 20 they are boring. He just wants to get his to 50 to be done with him and be able to say he has two 50s. They do tank as well as warshades, but without the controller aspect, more of a little defender (glowing touch) and scrapper/blaster (radiant strike and gleaming blast) but not as well as either. I personally dont think that when you get a form you should have to slot each like a normal power. You just dont get enough slots to tri-form effectivly as oh say starting all form powers with 3 slots, the forms are on thier own.

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

Only fools don't change their mind, so it is said...

Well, I am not really changing my mind: scrappers are what I love the most, but some tankers come close second and the rad/rad defender is real fun... because of it's versatility (it can blast a single target or a mob, heal, buff, debuff etc...).

And so comes my point; for a good while now I have been playing many Kheldians on different servers (Eye of the Universe on Guardian, Voidian & Stella Lumen on Champion, Lone Moon, Luminis & Noctisia on Pinnacle). I find more and more that I just love to be able to switch roles according to the needs of the mission or the team: I can play blaster with the nova form, scranker with the dwarf form and now I build my human form as adefender-controller type team support character (with medecine, stealth and leadership pool added).

My personal view tends to see warshades as a much better archetype than peacebringers (way too many flight powers is a waste of power choices, and only self teleport in dwarf form as an alternative), even if my highest one IS a PB (lv 34).

Scrappers will always be my first love, and Tanks get my utmost respect... but versatile Kheldians may just be my true soul mate after all.

I love playing Medica, because I think I am a healer at heart, BUT I also rock at being a blaster. I thought I would like scrappers the most, but I keep wishing they had more ranged attacks. Heh.

Albeit I got my degree in counseling to help people. Yep! I'm a healer.

A well played scrapper. You know, the type that survives stuff in situations that most people think you'll get wasted in. Ya, that's the bomb. I've done it lots of times with my Broadsword/Regen. The trick is using the parry power, and instant healing - so awesome.

The reason why is because I love someone who battles back. I got a tank to 50, very fun, but even being able to withstand a massive amount of damage isn't as fun as when you SHOULD die, people EXPECT you to die... and then you don't! Instead of running you face the enemy, and take it to him faster than he can take it to you.

A scrapper is kind of an underdog, and in the eyes of many he walks in the shadow of the tanks. Nothing quite as cool as taking down 4 freakshow bosses by yourself with a sword.

RE: Your Soul match Archetype....

I've got dozens of alts across most of the servers. For a long while, my Energy/Energy blaster on Guardian was my favorite, but the fact is she sucks for soloing, and on there that's most of what I did.

These days... my Inv/SS tanker on Pinnacle is my best friend. If I want to solo, he shreds the enemies -- and if I run out of end because I was silly and didn't realize the importance of Stamina until recently, he can just sit and take hits while waiting for Haymaker to recharge over and over.

Or if I want to team up, either with my rapidly growing SG or with anybody else, I can keep and hold aggro, keep the baddies off my buddies, and dose out a little punishment while letting my SG-mates do the real damage.

He's also my badgehound -- only level 25 and already most of the way to 200.

So yeah, I'd have to say Tanker's my calling after all this exploration.

QUOTE
I always prefered Spider-Man to all other heroes because, not only is he spectacular, but, despite his amazing powers, he's as vulnerable to a single knife or bullet wound as much as anybody. (yeah I like Batman too for the same reasons but I don't relate as much with psychotic millionaires).

Couldn't have said it better myself. I began playing as a blaster, and I loved serving out the high damage from a distance. I guess if I was ever in the army, I'd try to be a sniper. But my low HP made me too vunerable without a team.

But after trying a few ATs, I found my Soul match as a Scrapper. Sure you can hurt me, but I can hurt you more, especially if you are a big, bad AV.

Three cheers for Critical Hits!

CoH Rocks

Blasters kill everything, usually before they get killed themselves. When it comes to dealing pain, a blaster has no equal. We just have a hard time taking our own medicine! So we love Tanks and 'fenders!

I am split decission here

I love my healing defender, now that I added some attacks toi her arsenal

I love my Fire/Ice tank for holding aggro, and making the mob's looking like smacked down bi***es

I love my AR/Dev blaster because I can shoot the crap outta mobs, then duck behind a corner and laugh maniacally as they step on my trip mines and fly all across the room.

I Like my BS/Invuln Scrapper because I can take a beating and keep on ticking

I hate trollers

I would have to say that either a troller or a tank is my favorite AT. Blasters are awesome, I must agree with Xol and Jeni. I love scrappers, and I'm not so big on Defenders. Granted Kinetics is simply phenomenal, but other than that, I don't like them. They are necessary for a good team, yes, but I don't like playing one meself usually.

I don't play the game, so I don't know how much help I can be here, but I try. Feel free to PM me at any time.
