| What's the difference between Quills and Blazing Aura like powers? |
|

Ok, so I got a spines scrapper, way cool fun.... but what's so great about quills? It just looks like blazing aura... a constant taunt? Does it really slow the baddies down so much that it can be used defensivly? Does it actually inflict a lot of damage unlike blazing aura or icicles, etc???

I havn't used it much on my spines/dark scrapper, but from what I understand it works just like blazing aura. A taunt with a little damage.
I use it to great effect on my lvl 19 scrapper in combination with build up and a couple area attacks to take down large groups of minions in the hazard zones.

Quills only taunts based on the attacking effect. The auras work with gauntlet to create a longer term taunt effect. Basically, quills get the attention of the mob. When a tanker runs in with his aura, it will grab the attention and KEEP it. Also, Quills does slightly more damage than Blazing Aura and has a fairly good chance of critical hitting. I've seen a crit from Quills do over 20 damage to each of a group of baddies. Not alot for a scrapper, but 5-15 damage every 2 seconds with a chance of crits and no need to click any powers, combined with a minor slow effect really makes killing a mob fast.
What I do is run in targeting the boss, with quills and my other toggles running. I fire off Spine Burst, then proceed to Impale, Lunge, and Air Superiority the boss until he's dead or Spine Burst is back up. When the boss is gone, I then focus on the next toughest baddie, all the while firing Burst every time it comes up. An even lvl mob with a boss and 2 lts will usually result in the minions dead before I kill the last LT, just from PBAoE effects. Can't wait to toss Ripper and Throw Spines into my chain, and really get the mass killing into full swing.
my current project: Spine/Will farmer, Quillpower, on Virtue.

as i see it, scrapper DoT auras are useless in pve. the damage done seems negligible and the extra aggro can be deadly. HOWEVER DoT auras are the only thing that truly safeguard you from AS in pvp, assuming you have 3 acc SOs and maybe focused accuracy or perma rage for good measures. that why there are sooo many spines scraps in pvp zones. thats my $0.02

Whut up, guys. Thanks for the post everyone.
I know there are some more spine scrappers out there and I was hoping to hear thier take on quills.
You got it - you like it... let me know.
You got it - you hated it and got rid of it... let me know.
I'm pretty tight on powers with my build, and I might do better getting an additional defensive power earlier. Please let me know, I really don't want to get it, spend 2 levels enhancing it, and then dump it cuz it sucks.
I'm looking for PVE effectiveness. Thanks.

My Spines Scrapper has Quills, and I like it alot. The Spines scrapper is pretty much an AoE scrapper and I like to use Quills to help me herd a group of mobs for max AoE effectiveness. Warron's right in saying that the taunting effect of this power will not overcome that of a Tanker, but I've found that there is just something about a Spines scrapper - perhaps the toxic damage - that really makes mobs ticked off.
I took it early and actually wish I'd taken it later. It is extremely endurance-hoggish and you might like it better if you take it when you could slot it with at least DO endurance-reducers.
As far as the slow effects, I barely notice it against the mobs I fight, which are usually +2 to me. It will noticeably slow mobs that are significantly lower level than you, which probably isn't that helpful.

Hmmmm... thanks. It kinda looks like it has pretty good damage, for a toggle, when you consider the fact that the spine poison gives DOT. Like, say every burst gives about 5-7 damage, but for the next 3 seconds you get an additional 2 damage as well. I wonder if this effect continues to multiply or not.... if so, just standing in a group doing nothing you could inflict over 100 points of damage in a 10 second period.
Interesting.
As far as end, I'd be getting it at lvl 22, when I have stamina at lvl 20. Lvl 23 and 25 I'd slot it up to have 2 acc and 3 end reductions.

I hate that I'm still so indecisive about this power! I really don't want something that is going to draw aggro to me. If this doesn't do significant amount damage, as in it does the same amount of damage that blazing aura does - I don't see what the point is!
I'm scrapper, not a tank. Anyone else have experiance with this power? Please provide you info... lvl 18 powers usually are UBER - so I have a feeling there is something I'm missing here!!!!

Actually Quills isnt a toggle power it is a single time attack power with a slow recovery rate. It does minor damage also I think. For slotting I would go with 2 time reducs, 2 end reducs, and 2 accs. With throw spines (same slotting) I have seen other spine scrappers running around with I thinbk both powers running basically throwing a continous barrage of spines going.

Quills is a toggle, Spine burst is the PBAoE attack.

Quills is the essential spine scrapper power. You really can't miss it.
Quills --> Build Up --> Throw Spines --> Run in --> Spine Burst --> attacks of your choice to mop up.
By the time you have used Build Up, Throw Spines and run in, the tank should have gone in and got aggro. Then even if you do get aggro from Quills, they will shortly be dead anyway.

But what I'm asking about is the combo of Quills and Death Shroud.

I don't know about numbers, but it should work well. Though it does not benifit from critical hits like Quills, it will do dark damage. As lethal damage is quite commonly resisted, this will make up for Quill's lethal-based shortcomings against robots and similar foes. End drain will be a bitch though, and I know first hand that endurance doesn't come easily to a dark armour scrapper. But in the end it is more damage and if you are doing damage with you toggles, you won't need as much endurance attacking. The extra AoE damage will gain more aggro, but spine scrappers get quite a bit of that anyway.

I could be wrong about this..but, Quills sounds like a pretty good teaming PVE power, at least with Blazing Aura'ing tanks and the like.
This is what I'm thinking:
You do the combo as said above, and run in to do the melee attacks. Meanwhile the tank with his aura power is making things aggro on him with Gauntlet and what he loses to aggro is more than likely going to you. This constant switching of targets can seriously slow down attack rates of baddies..that combined with the slow effect produced by Quills and maybe that of Chilling Embrace.
I'm not entirely sure how the switching targets thing works but I have heard it said that the main purpose of a Fire/Kin's Imps is to keep the baddies switching targets constantly, thus slowing their attack rate. And that the Fire/Kin's main source of damage is Fulcrum Shift combined with their AoE powers such as Hot Feet and Flashfire.
