It seems they are planning on having integrated voice chat for fellowships in LOTRO. What kind of effect do you think this will have? I know Turbine used this for teams in DDO, and it caused some good things (battles were easier to coordinate) and some bad (people were kicked from teams if they didn't have a mic). What do you think this will do to fellowships?

I seriously dislike it. I don't care if the battle goes slightly faster. I want to have a great fantasy experience, and having to listen to random people and their background noise won't help with that. If some guilds like to do it for themselves that is fine with me, but forcing it on me like DDO did is a big no-no to me.

I agree with Phedre :) Lord of the rings is too beautiful to be ruined by voices on a microphone.

The GCoA has had this discussion over the course of a couple of threads on our Forums, and opinions vary. I'm partial to Phedre's line of thought, in that this should be done on a player by player basis. Others see it as a necessity, which I am loath to give in to. I came into the MMO world playing EQ and having to rely on nothing but text, and I'm reluctant to do it any other way. However, I'm not averse to trying it out. Just so long as it's not forced upon me.

I am used to talking on mics with people on vent and TS and I only do so on guild wars basically because its a MASSIVE pvp game and in HoH , it is almost essential that you have vent or TS ( microphone servers). But in LOTRO, im not sure its such a pvp based game.....

My problem is that I have problems talking and doing anything else at the same time. I can hold 3 instant message conversations and post on the forums all at the same time, but if you throw in there "talking" to someone it is all lost. I would personally much rather type it out than talk into my headset.
I'm hoping they implement this in a much different way than they did in DDO. There were times I didn't log into the game because I didn't feel up to talking to people or putting my headset on.

Anyone else thinks this adds that "XboxLive" feel to the game?
In all seriousness, I really don't have a problem with using voice chat. As long as it is not mandatory for grouping or raiding.
In Anarchy Online, we had a TS server set up for the larger raids to help keep order. Group Leaders and the Raid leader were the only ones that were allowed to speak to help coordinate attacks, healing, and crowd control.
It worked well that way. Once the raid was done, we went back to text chat.
So for us, it was seen as an additional tool. If you were not a group Leader or Raid leader, you didn't need a microphone. You just had to be logged into the TS server so that you could hear what was being said.
As for myself, I really don't see it as becoming the norm for me in LOTRO. I will use it occasionally if needed, and only when the majority of the group does.
But to be honest, I don't see it becoming a major issue unless you are a member of the Uber-Raid Kinship, or the Gamer Elite crowd. Those are usually the ones that demand that you have it or else.
And yes, I have seen a few kinships that list TeamSpeak/Ventrilo as a membership requirement. Of course, doing that will just about guarantee the kind of player you get is the kind you deserve.

The use of a mic has good and bad points. One good point is that it is easy to control the flow of combat and execute combination strategy...such as LOTRO's conjunctions. If you are just playing with your typical group of friends that occupy the Fellowship, then there is no problem. One bad point, if you are not playing with your typical Fellowship, then there is a good chance you may come across a drooler or two in which you really have no desire to speak with.
Lol, in DDO, I came across a person that was doing a very good job role-playing a dwarf by using some interesting accent. The strange thing was, that eventually everyone started to talk in the same accent...very strange indeed.

I have a bad habit of doing this myself. When ever I'm talking for a long period of time to someone w/ a very strong accent, I tend to pick it up. It is like accents are contagious.
