RE: which is better blaster power set?

Well, if I'm not the first to say it, this is the first I'm saying it to you. Welcome to the Site!

Second, bad idea, asking that question. There is no best. To ask that allows people to start arguing which they think is best. Instead of stating my favorite as the best, I'm going to inform you of pro's and con's. Then you can decide.

Energy is a very good single target damage set. It also has the side effect of knockback. This is good for soloing, as it impedes incoming attacks. But it is bad for groups, because it can make melee based characters have to run after their foe. Alot. The down fall is longer recharges, and higher endurance costs.

Electricity has a completely different feel to it. It's side effect is endurance drain, which can be very powerful. If a foe has no endurance, he cannot attack. As far as endurance costs and recharges, I couldn't tell you. Perhaps someone such as Thundarpants, who has alot of experience with electricity, can fill you in more on that regards. However, at lvl 26 you get access to a "pet" in Voltaic Sentinel. This pet, like most, is not very smart, however, it does do its job, which is to attack the bad guys. It makes soloing a bit easier, as it tends to draw some aggro to itself, and away from you. Basically, you have a very dumb teammate following you around. Get used to it, and you're golden.

The other nice thing about electric is its nuke. All blaster sets have a massive damage power that when you use it tends to kill, or nearly kill, everyone it hits. The downfall is a long recharge and the fact that it completely drains you of endurance, which can be a real hardship if it fails to kill something. Electric's nuke power, Thunderous Blast, does the same thing, but a lil bit differently. Most nukes are PBAoE's, meaning you have to run into the middle of a mob, and it then kills everything around you. For a blaster, this is very dangerous. Thunderous Blast is different in that its a foe based AoE. You target a foe, fire it off, from a distance, and it kills everything around your target. This means you are not at as much of a risk when you use it as you would be if you had to run into the mob itself.

Anyway, I hope this information helps. Writing all that has made me want to go roll up an electric blaster, just to see how fun it could be. Whatever you choose, enjoy it, and if you don't, try something else. Its as simple as that.

Have fun,

Warron

RE: which is better blaster power set?

Well, I just hit 50 last night with my energy blaster, so I can chime in about him. Energy puts out the most damage with electric very close behind. The knockback isn't as bad as some people think, as long as you learn to use certain powers at appropriate times. Energy torrent and power push have the most chance of knockback, so try using them when needed. I soloed quite a bit with little problems. I also did quite a bit of teaming at the higher lvls without any troubles of screwing mobs up with the knockback. Right now, I am taking a run with electric on a lvl 10 so far. so I cant say much accept that it's been great so far.

Energy or Electrical Blast...

Because both sets are played differently, the answer to which is the better set may lie in your play style.

The obvious difference of endurance drain vs. knockback; IMHO advantage goes to knockback because you see immediate benefits from the feature without having to slot your toon for that purpose. Knockback is very useful in both solo and team play. By efficiently slotting and cycling your powers, you can keep baddies off their feet for an entire battle.

Another advantage that energy has over electric is you can get blast, torrent, burst, and snipe--your main assault powers by level 8.

As far as electric, you have a sapping power with short circuit, a hold in telsa cage, and a ranged nuke in thunderous blast--3 great features lacked by the energy set. Having some controller-like powers can be a sound benefit to your attack strategy. I personally have not found value with voltic sentinel because of the lack of firepower, although it has it's uses.

How you incorporate the listed benefits to your specific play style may provide the answer you seek.

Good hunting crimefighter.

RE: which is better blaster power set?

Sorry I've been gone a while...... Blaster advise eh.......

The previous posters have offered up some good advise for you already. It will depend a lot on your play style and how much you team. There is no best....there is only what's best for you.

I'd have to say that Energy is the best for a solo Blaster simply because of the multiple attacks and knockback cutting back the incomming DPS. Knockback can be hard to manage when teaming, but is not alltogether impossible to manage though. You just need to learn where to knock back your enemies to not mess up Tanks and Scraps. An efficient Energy Blaster can knock mobs up against walls and into corners. That keeps things nice and tight for the Scraps and Tanks to continue doing their jobs.

Energy is also good for defending your healers. If something wants to get up close and personal to your empath, you can send them flying out of melee range. Knockback is completely underestimated, but I think that's because so few people use it well. It is one of the harder Blaster secondary effects to master.

Energy also has dual damage types. If your enemy is resistant to energy damage, they are usually weak to smashing, and vice versa. Always leaving you with an effective damage output type.

If you already have friends running other KB Blasters or Illusion Trollers, you can really have fun running all KB teams. It's just not a Tank or Scrapper friendly team. But very ammusing none the less. I run with a couple of Illusion Trollers with my AR Blaster that does a lot of KB. Most stuff deosn't have a chance to get up and fight.

Now as for Electricity. For me that's the shiz. The lack of knockback makes you more popular in teams, and having to think a little less about you position in the fight. You aren't worried about what direction your enemies might get blasted. Electricity is all about finesse and control where Energy is all about raw power. Electricity does have a lot of fun controllerish powers in the set. Tesla Cage is one of the best looking holds in the game. Plus you get to stack holds. If you created a tech based toon, you will already have your second hold for Boss locking.

Blasters don't get critical holds like Trollers do. You have to hit a boss at least twice to actually hold them. The Tazer will give you the preliminary hold to hit them with, and then you can folow it up with Tesla Cage.

My guide on Electrical Blasters is still out there. I'll put a hot link in here for you. There is just too much to cover in a single post.

Both are about equal in PvP. Energy and Electricity have some of the best Melee in the secondaries.

Both are great graphically.

Electricity has a ranged nuke. A very handy skill, but Energy's nuke leaves nothing in melee range after it goes off. Giving you time to bug out or Phase Shift before everything getting back up realizes how mad they are at you....lol

If you are looking to be an all out powerhouse..... Energy.

If you like to be in more control of your environment....Electricity. Here's my guide on it: Guide to Electricity It's a little out of date but still functional. I'm rewriting it for I7 and adding in some advise for running a "Sapper" build and utilizing the Endurance drain now that they corrected it. If you have any questions about that stuff specifically, feel free to PM me.

I've also seen very effective Blaster combos of Energy/Electric and Electric/Energy.

RE: which is better blaster power set?

Hi and welcom to GameAmp,

Energy Blasters are certainly the best.
I got 2 Energy/Energy figures, 1 on COH Union server and the other on COV Defiant server.
Going solo is fine in the beginning, but they are better in teaming. Energy Blasters made the most damage to your foe's.
I playing now with on in COH, she's now lvl 5. At this lvl they are good for teaming. Yesterday after lvl-up to 5, I got directly 3 invites for teaming.
So I'll go for Energy/Energy, but Energy/Electric is also a good power to choose.

Good luck with you choice and I cya arround.

If you want to add me as friend, your welcom.

Greetings:

RE: which is better blaster power set?

I am currently playing a elec/energy blapper, and its soo much fun. the energy melee powers rock, and i can almost oneshot white minions at lvl 5. and you get build up very early, at lvl 4. also, the electric powers are great for burning off the endurance of your foes, and TB its a great way to kill tons of minions before you rush in to melee range

Just a clarification for any rookie Blasters out there. You won't be doing any rushing in after Thunderous Blast to have some melee fun. You will be completely drained of endurance, unable to recover it(without a Kinetics player weilding Transference) and basically the main sorce of aggro to anything left standing.

For details on strategies to circumvent the complete endurance drain of an Alpha Strike power using a Kinetics friend just let me know. I've been using this little "feature" since I discovered that it was the only thing that could recover my endurance while I was waiting for the Endurance block to go away. Adrenaline Boost is great AFTER the End block drops, but will not allow you to regain endurance until then.

Another great feature of the Energy secondary is Conserve Power. It's good for all of the happliy nuking Blasters out there. I personaly use this as the secondary for my Fire Blaster. The buff has a decent duration, so you can hit it before the nuke, or after. The "after" activation will of course have to wait till the end block drops, and you gain a little end back.

What I'll do is to kick Conserve Power, Build Up then Nuke. What this allows is that once the End block is lifted, you are still sitting there with almost no endurance. Even with 3 slotted Stamina you are in a bad way for endurance. Your standard attack routine will not cost as much and you can get back into the fight much faster.

If you were to consider an endurance sapping build using Electricity I advise going Elect/Elect. It's one of those "All or Nothing" descisions to make. To effectively be a Sapper, you have to get down and dirty in the mob for effectiveness. Do it half assed and you will be taking a dirt nap! The only way to survive large group sapping is with a Tank or two in tandem and there are mobs that I just won't even attempt it with. Because of your proximity to the mob, and most likely the Tank, mobs with heavy hitting AoE's will kill you even though they are targeting the Tank.
