I am having a HUGE fight with myself..

MYSPACE

The name sends me into an oblivion of excitement, guilt, fear, overjoy, etc. I would love to get on and post everything in the world I love, bands I like, hobbies, etc, but I feel guilty because of my life out in the real world and what will happen to what goes on in RL if I have two personal sites to manage. So, I will leave it up to my fellow Ampers to sway me:

I agree with Mal on this one, myspace.com is for younger aged people who give in to peer pressure and etc. They all think it's great because someone else has one, and another person finds out about it and wants one because the last person had one.....you see where I'm going with this? Granted, there are many, many mature people on the website, it is over run with young teenage kids. My brother has a myspace, and he sat on the computer for 6 hours on the site alone. How do you sit there and read about other people for 6 hours? Personally, (and I will probably get smacked for saying this), I think myspace is for people who don't know how to interact with other people in real time, i.e. City of Heroes and well...real life. Like I said, don't get me wrong, there are promising people that use it, just too many "bad" people use it to make it good.

Now to you Singularity, I vote for a big No on getting a myspace. Post your stuff in your profile on this website, where people who kind of know you can read about you. At least here, you've got "friends", and you've got a reason to talk to people.

And now....I've run out of ideas to talk about, guess it's bed time.

I'd half to agree with Dark here, the site is overrun with many preteen kids plus many wannabe singer, comedians and entertainers too that just want to spam thier upcoming acts to any MySpace members in the area they will be performing in next. Cheap advertising, gotta love it.... :P
All I know is that having 3 kids, if any of them decided they were going to use MySpace, I would be watching them like a hawk. I would hate to have to do that, but there is way to much temptation and pressure in a community site like that for things to go wrong in a hurry. I know I'll probably get the "I would never do anything like that" rant from others, but trust me, experience speaks alot.
I could probably go on and on with more psychoanalytical BS, but its just my opinion and wanted to get my 2 cents in at least.
Not that any of these posts are going to make the decision for you anyway, just be careful man if you decide to go ahead with it.

Are you kidding? Dark's post brought me back to reality about the stalkers and porno freaks on myspace and how I would rub shoulders with them if I got one. Yes, it would be nice to actually ask to be friends with Depeche Mode and The Deftones, but what about the bad side? You guys are right. But please, do not take this as pressure for those who want to sway me to get one. I value the opinion of all my fellow Ampers.

This topic is cracking me up because it proves a point that I have been saying for years... anytime something gets really popular, people will make bashing it the new popular thing. Even if they haven't tried it and know nothing about it, aside from heresay and news reports.

The fact of the matter is that MySpace is a good website, that's why it has gotten so popular. And there are MILLIONS of people on it, of all ages and races. It is easy to set up, and easy to work with, and you just might meet some nice people there. Does it have its downfalls? Yep. Just like every site (this one too).

I say you do what you want to do, Singularity. Being an individual means making your own decisions, it has nothing to do with doing what is or isn't popular at the time. If you want to MySpace, do it. Have fun with it. It is free, and if you don't like it, you can delete your account and move on. No harm, no foul. And if you don't want to do it, don't. But make that decision based on what you want, not by peer pressure received here, or anywhere else.

Nakoma, spoken like a true....whatever it is that speaks well.

Singularity, last night I was a bit tired and angry that my brother spent so much time on the site for what I thought was nonsense. But it is true, Myspace.com is, or in my opinion was, a good website. I guess it's one of those things, it'll be good if you watch yourself and don't get overwhelmed in it all. Yes, stalker like people are all in it, but that doesn't mean that they will get to you. Just don't forget, if you do make a myspace, to watch out for wierdo's and don't give out to much information.

So even though I do hate myspace, and rule against it, I did forget to account for the pro's of the site. Props to Nakoma for reminding for of that one.

So now my final verdict is this: I still rule against it, but if you do get a myspace, do not let it overwhelm you, let it take hours away from your life, etc. Kind of like sugar in a diet, use it sparingly, cause it's not the whole meal. Besides....what time would you use playing CoH, called the Widow Maker if I remember, if you're on myspace.

There are enough good people on there to make up though. And it's a place to meet more friends, also to meet the bad side and who to avoid. Myspace does have a private setting, and I might use this. I have a knack for just putting down EVERYTHING about myself. In fact, every once in a while I will take a piece of paper and fill it with everything I am thinking about. No joke. Some issues ive seen come up...

1: The age group using myspace
many people of all ages use myspace, and the most commonly hit point is that they are pre-teens wanting to socialize with friends and such. my response to this is that there are many people of all ages on myspace, most of them seem really on the ball (except for lordstarwolf, hes wierd).
2: Stalkers (not the pvp kind)
Myspace is great because it has a feature, that if you are under the age of 18, it allows you to make your site private to everyone who isnt on your friends list already. the purpose of this is so that only friends you know in real life or people you know from other sites (like here) will be able to get to your site and communicate with you.
3: Myspace isnt a substitue for human interaction
True, it is not. but i have many friends in RL that i do not have their phone numbers and as such cannot make plans to see them or hangout or have lunch or something. So, on myspace, all i have to do is comment "hey whats goin on? wanna hang out tommorrow night or something" and that solves problems, plus i am seeing someone who i would be seeing if it was not for myspace oin the first place.

i have enjoyed it, its a great bonding experience since i do not see my friends unless i make an effort to see them durin the summer. i will likely cut way way way back on my time spent on myspace once school starts.

and to whoever brought up (cant remember right now, sorry) the point of your brother visiting the site for six hours at one time- i have done that with this website in the past, actually. several times.

Honestly, I just always mess with my friends about MySpace. I understand that it's huge, so you should join if it interests you. I'm happy just talking to you guys and my RL friends. If you like to be a tad bit more social...in the virtual sense...then the site is probably for you.

Look out for sexual predators, though...Unless you are one...Which isn't okay with me...Especially on Tuesdays...Because I think Tuesdays are worse than Mondays...And being approached by a sexual predator on a Tuesday would just make them even worse...Unless you're into that kind of thing. :P

A Lady friend of mine has shown me her section of myspace.com, she gets some freaky people asking to be her friend, the good thing is you can choose who you want.

She asks why I don't have a section on it, I tell her the same reason I don't walk around with goofy looking white earbuds (headphones that fit in the ear) like pod people... scratch that... I meant IPod people... yeah... that's what I meant...

She is by no means a teen, and most of the people on her friends list are adults, but there is a large number of younger folk who use it as well, it seems geared towards the younger generation almost a throwback to the days of the Hippies and free Love (just making a point of reference to the freedoms it seems to posess.)

If you like posting personal information and getting responses then by all means go for it, monitor it closely as well and keep in mind that lierally everything you post will be visible, as for me I don't like people that much especially strangers to give out as much personal information as I have seen from some of the myspace crowd.

It does seem to harken back to the days when the internet had no safeguards and was literally a free for all, ah for the good ol' days...

i have a myspace profile just so i can look at other people's pictures. thats my suggestion, make a page, but put absolutely nothing on it and use it just to look at the pictures of others, which can be very entertaining.

The answer to your question depends on the answer to this question: why do you want a myspace page?

Do you have an actual reason to spend the time and effort making a page? Is there a point? Or do you want to do it just because other people do?

Here's some food for thought... People are now being warned that because the Internet doesn't die, anything you post on a Myspace page can come back to haunt you. If you and some frat brothers post pictures of yourselves wallowing in pool full of jello holding beer bottles and joints, your future employer may not like it (and believe me, they're looking).

I mean, if you were and employer who's tired of immature, difficult to deal with, lazy employees, and there was this magic website that could tell you exactly what someone stood for, wouldn't you use it.

lol yeah sing, dont put any pics up of your frat brothers smokin doobies if you decide to join a frat in about 3-4 years, but i think the pool of jello would be a really cool idea. i have an inground pool that is 25x40 feet and would love to dump tons of jello mix in there and see what would happen!

Me and my wife have an account there. I use it to network, and be able to keep in touch with the part of my family that lives far away. Theres a city of heroes group on there that were apart of and like to help answer questions. . . kinda like this place lol. Its not just for 14 year old girls..grown adults use it too. Which the whole caution against preditors thing comes to mind. If you do get one, just make good use of the safety features.

Haven't any of you watched that show about how this guy made like 10 myspace accounts as 13 yr old girls. He caught all these petifials (spelled wrong). I think Myspace.com is causing problems in the world and needs to be shut dowm, It orginally said, "to connect with freinds". Use the phone gash dang it! Or aim! Or email! But something that reveals you to EVERYONE on the Internet?? People need to wake up to the reality who and what is out there.

This is the problem with the news, only the negative sells. You don't have to worry about being busted as a pedophile if you aren't one. You don't have any information revealed that you don't give out. As with everything in life, it just requires being careful. Do you think that no information can be gleaned from all of us just by using this site? Think again. ANY involvement in ANY part of the internet puts your personal information at risk.

If used properly, this can be just one more tool for positive communication, and it is out there to be had. I am a normal person, I have a ton of friends, I go out and do stuff in the real world, make phone calls, all of that... and I also communicate on the internet. Open you mind, you might be surprised. :)
