Costumes and revealing skin

I'll phrase the question as simple as possible for now to not limit the options for discussion.

When do you consider a costume too revealing?

RE: Costumes and revealing skin

You can make a female with bikini slip and "eden" top. But the only thing I see is a 14 year boy behind a PC. It has lost any relation with reality. If it makes the player behind his PC happy good for him. I don't have any issue with any of the costume parts in the game. I play the game to beat up bad guys. And as a nice side effect my heroines look good.

Huh... I suppose that wasn't exactly meant to refer at me?
Cause for one I'm 17 and besides that I'm not asking this to know how far I can go creating a costume, right...

Just to prevent misunderstanding, it just came to mind as an interesting subject for discussion and that's what this is meant to be: a general discussion.

Well, if you look at the models they used and how the "costume" fits, it looks like every tight costume type is painted on. Depending on the colors and the designs, the "model form" can be visually broken up to not be as "revealing".

But to answer the question, it depends on the individual when a lot is too much.

No, no, not at all referring to you! I am very sorry if you had that idea. It was completely unintentional. I have never seen you in game, so I have no idea what your characters look like. And I meant it as a general reply. I just said that I think nothing in COH is too revealing. I think it is fun to see girls in bikinis and guns. For a part it is what makes COH such an brilliant game. I just wanted to say if I see one of the more scarsely wearing ladies around I don't think "wow, that is sexy" but in stead I think "I hope that guy is enjoying his dream girl".

RE: Costumes and revealing skin

The costume for my main ("Purpose" on Victory) was originally based on the traditional costume for DC's Black Adam as well as the black suit Superman wore after being "resurrected". This evolved into seeing what sort of "cut outs" I could get for a male figure (really just a matter of matching skin color to the pattern color on a tight costume). Even so, I've never been comfortable making a male costume using the "briefs" design or the newer, more modest shorts option. Maybe it's prudish, it may even be homophobic*, by the combination of really tight shorts combined with exposed upper legs on a male character really bothers me. I can definitely say it's hypocritical considering what I'm comfortable with on female characters.

*Referring to the pride some homosexual men have in displaying the male form, as opposed to more obscuring clothing such as boxers, loose jeans, or bermuda shorts.

RE: Costumes and revealing skin

I think it depends on how the illusion of revealing has been created. Does it look artistic? Is it classy? If so, then I see no problem but if it's just a character whose genitals have been barely covered, I see a sexually confused/disturbed little boy in front of a computer.

RE: Costumes and revealing skin

whats wrong with the briefs? a lot of professional wrestlers wear just briefs. are you insuinating that Mr. Hulk Hogan and Mr. Ric Flair are trying to turn you and 9 million other males on? :) Cause brother, the hulkamanaics all over the globe will be in your face! Now if you drink your milk, eat your vitamins and say your prayers, you'd be lucky to grow up big and strong like the Hulkster!

but seriously, doesnt aquaman or namor wear briefs? and robin! how can you diss robin like that?! and i wouldnt be opposed to bananahammocks either. that might be my new toon, Mr. Bananahammock, the Yoeman of the Codpiece.

The only time I would consider a costume too revealing is if you try to match the skin color to the top or bottom to give the illusion of nude. Other than that, I say everything in the costume creator is free game.

All of Liz's costumes (with the exception of her SG costume now) are quite revealing. Here are two examples:

Now see as the new guy looking at the forums and minding my own buisness i look in to a topic that sounds intresting what the reactions would be.. and then GRIFTER has to make me poke my eyes out with serated spoons with woodne handles and Boil them in 200 dg water for 50 minutes... thanks

as to the issue... all i see it is like this.. the same thing with most comic books.. the women are dressed in the skimpiest things available and it really doesnt bother me.. if you like skin show it.. if you dont.. then make a full armored suit... it is a matter of taste.. but who am i to say anything ok gtg my eyes are done

RE: Costumes and revealing skin

You know if your looking at characters on this game w/ the intent to thrill yourself then whoa....someone has problems. If you design a costume for same reason...whoa too. If you design the look and such for all intent purposes of style then have it. I have seen some scantinly designed heroes/heroines....actually if you take the briefs look...w/ one of the metal belts (upside triangle i believe) and match right colors it looks like the hero is wearing speedos. 1st time I saw I about choked on my drink. Funny stuff. I think it all comes down to your beliefs, ideals, yadda yadda yadda.....why takes this example...some may say this costume design is totally too much skin!

Example 1:

BTW, you may notice that this hero is exhibiting the new travel power coming out in Issue something or other! Enjoy this sneak peak!

side note for some of you that may not fully know me or of me...I like posting pics w/ my comments and such. Kind of gives a read by pictures feel. I really believe that pictures can really drive home the emphasize you want to make. Please dont try this at home and leave it to the pros.

I agree the fact of what you want your toon to look like is your own preferance.. i mean sure it is cute watching little girls in the witchbladish costumes running about but if you get a "thrill" out of it.. something is wrong..

oh and GRifter it is issue 56 1/2 and i found another example of it

You think that picture is bad! Ha! I have one that could top that one...make it look like childs play. I have a picture that will make you either die from laughing convulsion, vomit from unbelievability of the picture, or just acid dip your face in a vain effort to erase said image from retinas/memory.

And boy does it defy the logic of costume design! I could only wish I was half the man that designed the super suits!

RE: Costumes and revealing skin

From another woman's perspective, I too tend to assume the half naked heroine running around is most likely a young guy giving himself some eye candy while he plays. I don't think anything is wrong with that, I've even made some costumes for running around with my husband to give him a little laugh but in the end the costumes I fall in love with on my toons are imho very heroic, some give nods to existing characters that people have grown up with like Wonder Woman, etc. and others are completely my own creation derived from what I think the powerset/origin story would drive someone to.

In a nutshell the only thing I roll my eyes at while playing is when I see Mrs. ButtKicker with a bio about her time as a nun and she's flying around Paragon City in something Pam Anderson or Paris Hilton wouldn't even wear... good rule of thumb, if Paris Hilton thinks it's too revealing, it might just be...

There isn anything wrong with someone making a "revealing" character, unless they start broacasting inappropriate stuff in which i just leave it to the devs to resolve

RE: Costumes and revealing skin

Alrighty! I gotta get in on this one....just cause I'm a guy.

First off..... GRIFTER! That was just wrong! I am getting a good laugh though. I know for sure now I should not try to don a superhero outfit myself. Thanx for afirming that for me and stopping me before someone took "that" picture of me in the front yard! Whew! That was a close one.

Now, onto the reveiling part of all this......

Well, Thundar is a bad boy. Very few of you play on Liberty, and even if you had, you haven't seen my rarely played Stone Tank. She is concept based, but nekked as a jailbird! Granted it's not skin, she's made out of mud and was brought to life by Mother Nature herself(and a little help from an old, deleted alt of mine Moss Monsta). I'll not explain how I managed the nude look, but needless to say, when she is out of SG mode, It's all mud baby!

She's as big and ugly as I could make her given the fact that the costume creator cannot make overweight or completely misshapen bodies.

I got this wild hair after watching a show where some B rated actor proclamed "We'll not stand for this naked agression!". Hence, Naked Aggreshun was born! That, and a friend of mine got his name nerfed because someone didn't like "Mourning Wood" as a toon name. Ingenious play on words, but definately pushing your luck around Paragon. I was mad and wanted to push my luck and see if I got reported.

Funny thing is, 1-1/2 years later and still she's there. I think the caviot to this is that I ALWAYS keep her in SG mode if she is in public. In SG mode she looks like any old hero on the servers. She's mostly an inside the mission gag for my SG now. I get a lot of "Man she's ugly....Big, Ugly and Nekked!, Now go get stuff mad........"

Costume 2 now has the leaves look to stick with her natural theme. Costume 3 is the stone golem look. It's just the original costume that has the naked look. Her bio tells the reader that she was made from mud and just doesn't understand clothing. Nothing tacky. It even has a joke in there about her SG trying to explain to her, You just can't go out in public like that! The original concept was that her multitude of stone armors would be her clothes, or at least her attempts at clothing. When they are on, you can't see 80% of her original costume anyhow. (Another safe way to travel around unreported)

I've seen costumes that include clothes that are much more tacky. There is reveiling, and then there is slutty. The problem is, that line is in a different place in everyone's head. Pretty much why I keep Naked in street clothes. I really like the toon and concept.

I've seen a few slutty costumes myself and the first thought is...."That's a guy, girls wouldn't possibly make a toon that looks like that." Only to find out that there really is a woman behind the outfit. But in general I find that the ladies prefer more sensible crime fighting atire.

Personally, none of it offends me, but I don't have a 14 year old child playing the game. There is always room for an "inappropriate" costume once you've entered the mission with friends. I keep pretty close track of the age of my SG members. We have adult themed nights and SGs that they are not allowed to participate in. And when they are on the team, she stays in appropriate attire.

Shoot, we have an entire hobby VG comprised of out of work porn stars and criminals that have banded together. Those can be some hilarious nights on Vent and in mish, but definately NC17 and above.

Thats my take on it. There is a time and place for everything. Even a little nakedness. The human body is nothing to be ashamed of. Just know the right time and place, and you'll have no problems having a little adult fun.

P.S. (Don't go hanging around Miss Liberty anouncing your nakedness........DUH!)

Well, well. This is a point to discuss, but I don't think. I'm creating an character that looks good with his or her powers. And you know what characters I got.
But it can be an issue for some gamers. But i got no problems with it. I only like the nice shots that i can shoot during the game.

lol.....I saw more naked women when I was 14 than I do now. What does "TEEN" have to do with it!?

I'll say it again, I reserve her naked outfit for inside of missions with my adult friends.

Were you to see her original costume, you would not be aroused, I can gurantee you that. I went to great efforts to make her ugly.

My SG mates will not look at her she's so ugly.

My female SG members will not stand close to her in mish because they are afraid a little of that ugly might get on them.

It's a gag and the women in my SG get it. We have 10+ women in the SG, and considering the male to female ratio in game, that's a high percentage when you are talking about an SG with about 40 people in it. If they were offended....oh boy would I hear about it. They are not shy about telling me when they have a problem.

No one hears what we say in vent but us, and no one on the servers see what we type in team chat. Therefore I feel I can do whatever I want as long as I do not offend the women in the group. My wisecracks are not off color, but I can get a good laugh by asking "Have you seen my costume, I forgot where I put it?". Then I turn on Stone Armor and tell them.... "Never mind, this will do.....".

Thus I stand behind my "There is a right time and place for everything" comment. Don't expect me to have to act like a 14 year old, or be sensored just because I have to play with them. I will act accordingly when there are minors about. (to be perfectly honest, most of our younger players act more mature, but that's another topic altogether)
