Ever since the PvP preview event Ive had the worst lag I've ever had and it's got to the point now where it is completely pointless for me to enter any mission or any kind of PvP. My frame rate starts to run at about 1 frame every 5 seconds - I cant move in the right direction without overshooting, cant see anything that is going on around me, basicly I just had to quit the game and will have to go play something else :(
With this Elite weekend coming up I'm desperate to get around this problem, Ive tried switching absolutely everything else off (including virus protection) and defragged my drive - my IP seems to be running fine with other games like CoH. The problem starts as soon as I enter any Arenas in PvP or any missions in PvE, Im ok in citys.
Does anybody have any suggestions that might help to stop this geek from crying in to his coffee? :(

a Napkin perhaps? O.o
Well I don't think the problem is with your computer if it just started after the weekend. I'd say there's just some problems with connections to GW and the problem might be over at the other end.
EDIT: You should contact the support and ask if there's any others having the same issue and if they've noticed any changes over at their end.

I had same deal on laptop Evil and what I did seems to have alleviated the lag a bit
I lowered screen resolution and put all of the graphic option to the lowest setting. Ok game looks like hell but at least the lag issue seems to have somewhat dimunish.
(either that or I got lucky on the following connexion)

do the normal geeky things like check your gfx/mobo/soundcard drivers. havent had any lag myself and thats after my isp has decreased my connection speed from 8 to 2 mbs. could be something in the updates from the weekend that disagrees with your pc

Hey geek, I have been having the same problems. The lag was even worse if I minimized the game. When I brought it back up I would frame rate lag all over. I would also have problems when loading into cities, cetrain textures would not show up. I figured that with some of the new maps, they had updated the graphics engine. So I went to ATI and downloaded the most recent drivers for my card. The problem for me is now fixed.

I'm at work and haven't had a chance to play GW since the weekend. Has the lag died down any? While I was playing over the weekend I was experiencing alot of lag, so I turned shadows off and unchecked the post-screen option. It got noticeably better and I was happy :)
But anyway back to my question...did it go back to normal now that the PvP Events up?

Try reinstalling Gws. If that dosent work go to your shortcut parameters and put in
-nosound -noshaders -dx8
With resolution at lowest and gfx options turned all the way down. If that doesnt help take a deep breath and relax. Its anet's end. Oh and I find if you run an antivirus Nod32 then you may experience lower ping rates between anet and yourself. Hope this helps

I have the latest graphic drivers, updates, etc, and know a lot about computers, technology in general.
With that said, I haven't changed a single thing on any of my gaming computers(have a few so the gf has her own, and if a friend visits). They all started having moderate lag once the new patches came from the pvp weekend.
My internet connection is not the problem, I have tested it, and from all other sources I still get 500kb/sec to 1mb/sec.
So, I think they messed up something, maybe a similar thing like when gw factions first came out, and there was that town lag issue.
P.S. I also have good computers, this one for example is an AMD X2 4400+, with dual nvidia 7800GTX's, 2GB ram, and two WD raptor drives in raid 0.

Proved by me and my bro and 2 former guildies of mine.
And I'm used to lag, cus I have had a PC from 1996 or so before my current. This PC runs at medium quality and fine. Slightly worse when my bro is in GW too, worse when in same party. Then I just switch to lowest quality. And when my mom uses Azureus, I get killed, no doubt, cus she uses the no-limiy dl speed... *throws ashtray*

Thanks for all your helpful ideas and sympathy :) I ran off to play CoH for a while and that was fine (traitor!). I updated my graphics drivers just after the weekend so they are brand spanky new and didnt improve the situation, I did try and lower all my graphics levels but that didnt help either. I'll try some of the other things you have suggested and see if any help (fingers crossed). Thanks again! Appreciate all the feedback :)

Evil lag for evil geek =P
Ok.. i'm getting the lag too actually. My monk seems to stop, look and listen for 10-20secs when play arnd 3-5pm (Singapore time)
And so this new skill was invented
Stopping Haste
Your character Stops all of a sudden, allowing you to either Task manager off your illegal programs,Check your drivers, Hate microsoft or your nearby phone company or restart GW altogether. How ever, If you admin is geeky enough, he can recool his intel chip(unesscary),Remove dust from his Graphics Card,Reinstall with Factions CD or wait and pray for GW to resolve itself. Is your computer.. custom or pre-built?
To Geek:Ever since the PVP preview my internet has also has problems. if your lag is the spike kind, your connection with GW has a problem. send them a letter. Any chance you can tell what time does the lag occur?

I know with some updates they like to improves GWs graphics capabilities, and don't always mention it.
Anyway, a friend of mine, and me included - both had problems after one of said updates, mine was after the Factions Preview Event, and my Laptop stopped running GW as good as it did. My friend's problem was a little more recent.
Now, considering it's actual screen lag, rather than connection lag, the following fix can improve your machines ability to run GW.
-
Right click your GW shortcut, the one you will use to run the game. You should get this screen:
In the 'Target' box, add this after the shortcut's location.
So now you have:
| CODE | | \"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\Gw.exe\" -dx8 -noshaders |
Hope it helps anyone.

the dx command needs to be altered if your direct-x is a different version.
Nice post up there.

*gasp* The Geek plays CoH too! Must be contaigous. ;)
But yeah, I thought I'd come back and play a bit the other day. I was there for, oh..., about 5 minutes and decided it just wasn't worth the hassle.

Sorry, I'm assuming people have Dx9 installed, the -dx8 forces GW to use DirextX 8, instead of the default DirectX 9. This takes a little strain of your Graphics Card. The -noshaders disables certain effects I beleive, but both can be used together, or individually.

àfter the preview event i got problem with my sound, so maybe its something with your sound too. If you ready the updates they made some changes with the sound system in gw. My music runs fine but the gw sound effects sometimes stop. (that might explain why you are fine in towns). Maybe you can try mute the sound in gw options and see if the lagg stops.

The problem isn't with the graphics card. Something's up with their servers or the latency between them and us. Could just be that the amount of traffic they have these days is going to require an upgrade on their part soon, or it could be that something introduced in one of the updates is causing slow performance between them and us.

Hey thanks everybody - I did an Alliance Battle tonight and did it without the evil lag wooot!
I updated my Sound drivers last night and reset my sound settings to default in-game and that seems to have done the trick. I had noticed some very strange clicking noises after the recent update and your suggestions regarding sound prompted me in to action.
Happy geek should be better equipped for the elite weekend.
Thanks again everyone!
