Has anyone had a problem with going into Grandville it locking up the computer and screwing up the video adapter? I went into Grandville last night for the first time and It has hosed me up so bad I can not even get my character out of Grandville as I get about 2 seconds to move before it locks up the whole system.

Your computer might just suck... mines is pretty crappy but I never dc'ed or freeze up.. I'll only dc if I keep clicking on ppls info and stuff lik tht.. might wanna consider getting an update on ur computer

Mines does that on every island except mercy and cap, anyother island wont load and i basically lose my character

Yeh theres a few things that make my pc completely freeze. In some missions the sound freezes then loops then everything jams & I get tired of pressing cntrl alt del to reboot it so I just press the button to restart everything. Happens about twice a day so its not too bad just annoying when on a team.

I'm curious about this one...how do you lose your character? Once your toon is created, they are there until you personally delete them or a GM/Dev deletes them. Are you sure you meant your character is lost or you just can't play them anymore until you hit a new zone?

What he means, BD, is that when the character enters the zone that he cant load, it is 'lost' to him because he can not control it to get it out of the zone, and the zone will not load for him. Effectively the toon is then unplayable and 'lost'.
Seriously, guys. I have a small-time, 'homemade' computer. I was playing it with an ancient graphics card but it PLAYED. Your problem is probably a combination of things: CPU (underpowered), Graphics Card (underpowered), Sound Card (underpowered), and Memory (not enough). These problems will cause you to freeze, and crash ESPECIALLY when entering Grandville. BUT there is always a chance of a Quick Fix if you cannot upgrade your Computer. Please try the following if the game 'locks up', and is unplayable in only certain zones.
1) Go into the Options Menu on a Character that you can presently play, or make a new character just to get to the Options Menu.
2) Go to the Graphics and Audio Tab in the Options Menu.
3) Turn EVERYTHING DOWN. And I mean EVERYTHING. Turn off FSAA, lower your Quality Settings, Turn off Extra Effects, EVERYTHING. Also, Turn off 3D Sound.
4) Save Changes.
5) Log Off. You may have to Quit the game completely for all these changes to take effect.
6) Attempt to Log On to your 'stuck/lost' character.
7) Come back to this thread and tell us if it worked. Please.
Other than that, the biggest problem seems to be memory. In order to play this game decently you need about 1 GB of Physical Memory on your computer. NOT Virtual Memory. Sound issues can cause lock ups too, so a decent 3D enabled Audio Card is really necessary for smooth playing.
I will attempt to find a Guide for making your underpowered rig play the game. I think I saw one somewhere. Please try the above fixes first, and report back here. Thanks.

My system is not a "high end" system either and I don't get any lockups. I do get lag in grandville but I think that has a lot to do with my artic fog running while I fly around in there. I've got a 2.4Ghz P4 with a nvidea AGP vid card and 1GB of memory. I think you've got computer issues and not game issues. Take a close look at what you have installed on your machine and is it stable when you do other things.

I get lag here and there...i really don't freeze up that often, however, I know my system needs some upgrades. I can play in Grandville, even when GV2 spawns. It's laggy outside, but I fly high above it. I'm only working with about 512 memory though and not top of the line system. I get my most lag/hang ups when zoning and loading into/out of missions. But I can still play the game just fine, somewhat. I have everything that can be turned down, down and things that can be turned off, off. That really helps the game play. Visually, it's not the best, but I just want to play the game..lol. You've all seen my screenshots and can see that you really don't lose that much with all the graphics down or off.

Safe mode let me get out.
I have a ATI Radeon 9000 video card so it is a decent card 1.5 GB of RAM and a decent sound card. Only Grandvill has done this to me.

If safe mode let you get out than you might want to take some of Sapire's advice and before you enter grandville you might want to lower your graphics settings it wont be as stunning to look at but at least you will be able to play.

i had just a bit of travel lag no matter where i was (grandville was a bit more). i lowered my settings and not only did my travel lag stop, but my loading times went from around 15 secs to about 5 secs.

Well, slvrdragon, like Vill was saying; if Safe Mode set you free, then you will probably have to lower some settings before going in again. To be quite honest your rig smokes mine, but I have no lock-ups. Of course, I have made sure that my graphics and sound settings match what my cards will handle easily. AND although it is a fine card to play CoH on, the Radeon 9000 is last years (if not the year before's) model. The Dev's are going hog wild with CoV (and are slowly bringing CoH into sync with it), and are trying to include support for the Aegia(?) Physics Card. So, at least for now, I'd go through your Options Menu and see what you need to turn down to play well. I would suggest turning EVERYTHING off or down, and then bringing them slowly up until you get a lock-up. Then move back a bit on the settings, and you will have found the best match for your machine.
Hehehe, you REALLY wouldnt believe how much your system is BETTER than mine. I've had people say in shocked voices that they dont believe that I can get the game to play on it. LOL

Everyone's system is better than mine!!!!! I just learned real early that I had to turn down/off all the graphics that I could/should so I can play. When the beta hit, I couldn't get into Mercy because of a crapy system..lol. Now, I can go everywhere, but my graphics are all but gone. Again, if you are concerned that the game will look like crap and you paid for it, and you want to see it....again, look at the screenies I post(ed), that will show you that, even with graphics down/off, you still get a very good quality view of the game. You may not get all the fine little details, but you still get a very good look at the game and graphics they put into it.
Again, I have a video card that I bought just so I could play CoH when it came out....my memory is .5 GiG and the other stuff, well, lets just say that I bought this pc a couple of years befoe CoH came out.

Not literally lose otherwise Id have completely destroy the pile of junk in front of me by now (yes the pc). If i go anywhere other then mercy cap or breakout then i will be unable to log in, no matter what i do or how much i try, no log in, it just cuts out once the blue get 1/4 of the way up the bar im directed to the logging screen swearing and cursing.
