Funnest experience playing CoH/CoV tonight

There I was minding my own business heading to the park in SC when all of a sudden there was a request by none other than our own Mighty Smiter!

And what pray tell did he want, well I'll tell you true believers, help in defeating Babbage!!!

Now I'm not a noob but I am still new enough to the game that i had never faced this monstrosity before so i didn't know what to expect, man was this fight ever the coolest!

It was just what I expected when I bought CoH all of these different heroes coming together to battle this evil!!!

Man was it cool!

Anyways don't know if it warrants an entire thread but it was a pretty cool experience! wOOt!!!

Glad you had fun. ^^ You get the same experience during Hamidon Raids. I did my first one the other day and dang it was fun. Being able to join forces with 150+ other Heroes to fight one gigantic blob of goo and its 30-some-odd Mitochondria. And the reward (a Hami-O) isn't a bad add-on. ;)

I think cool experiences deserve a thread!

And when you see so many heros join together to take down a common enemy it is always cool. I love that feeling! And when he is finally dead it is the best!

I hope you got some screenshots!

Smiter said that he had some screenshots and would post them today.

I hear what your saying about lag Big, I was standing in front of him and then everything slowed down and then he decided to move so when i went to hit him Whiff!!! missed completely!

Yeah, I know that "funnest" isn't correct but my brain had shut off by the time that I posted this thread so please forgive my improper use of the English language:(

Had fun beating on that tin can though, would do it again in a heartbeat!!!

That would be my suggestion to the devs about monsters: a special reward (not just a badge) for such an epic accomplishment.

Nowadays, the giant Devouring Earths on the monster isles in Peregrine Island and even Lusca the giant octopus in Independence Port must feel very lonely... (many times I see even two of them at the same time left alone for hours). No one bothers anymore with them : it takes too long to gather too many people to bring them down since they beefed up their already monstrous HP; they do not give enough xp for the debt they inevitably give (especially to tankers getting the brunt of their monstrous attacks); they give no special reward besides a badge (wich is fine but not very substantial compared to a hamidon enhancement).

The devs might shy away from it because of what happened with the Winterlord in 2004: too many xp too fast from one monster encounter brought about the infamous ''Winterlord kids'': pathetic high-level inexperienced would-be heroes begging like street derelicts for influence.

May be a possible answer would be not to raise the xp given but to significantly lower (or abolish?) the debt incured when facing a monster, like 1/2 as in an indoor mission or even 1/4 to make it even more enticing, since a lot of people are required to divert from their intended play to face the awesome menace.

Bringing in more monsters, as some have suggested, is at the moment a complete waste of time and effort, since so few nowadays even care for the ones already there. A shame... but a sad fact. They should be special events for heroics of the highest caliber and memorable fun; the best occasion for all heroes active at that moment to gather together to save the city.

I think part of the problem w/ the GM neglect is that once you have the badge, there is no real reason for you to go and kill them again. And w/ the beef up, it does seem like a huge debt collecting event. I know I've taken Calamari down a few times now, but the only time I go and hunt him is if someone from the SG needs the badge.

I agree. Once you have the badge, there's not much point. The xp isn't really that great. They can't increase the rewards too much, though, for danger of a perpetual Winter-Lord type situation.

During the winter of 2004-05, the Winterlord came to ravage Paragon City. Along with hordes of snowlings (same as last winter's little snowmen) came that giant snowman tossing snow boulders in almost every zone, spawning sometimes in two or three places at once in the same zone and in multiple zones. It required a normal-sized team of moderate strenght to bring it down relatively quickly and gave a sizeable chunk of HP and a badge (cold fury; taking out a 100 snowlings gave the cold warrior badge), even if you weren't even doing anything directly to it. In the course of one normal gameplay, you could easily encounter it up to half a dozen times.

Needless to say, it was a powerleveling fest for many. Just run around, join a team tackling it and just wait on the sidelines to see the XP coming up. Then run to the next one. For the mid and high levels tackling it, it was a good boost; for lowbies hanging to them, you could go from the first levels up to 20-25 in a single game session or two.

It lasted three full months. What came out of it were a huge number of mid-level toons with not enough influence to buy the SO they were now entitled to for a large array of powers they had no idea how to use... because they had NO gaming experience other than ''watching the Winterlord go down''.

Then started the pitiful spectacle of level 25-35 would-be heroes begging even lowbies for influence! I even encountered once a level 35 toon in Steel Canyon who didn't know where to get DO's (and what for? not enough influence for SOs?). As their new range of enemies were much more dangerous than Vahziloks or Hellions, they were afraid to go out and make arrests to get it normally (or plainly to lazy to do it since they came up so easily). Even worse, you would team up, then find out that one, or even most of your team mates were middle-level (and now sometimes even high level) heroes with no tactics, no info on the enemy, no clue as how to deal with the mission setting and no idea how to use their too numerous powers in a team (like bubblers forgetting to bubble team mates or empaths not healing at all or just punching their healing aura repeatedly). I even once found myself in a team where almost half of it stood at the entrance waiting for the rest of us to do the mission and simply collect the XP from there... as they did so often with the Winterlord.

Thus, those came to be known as the ''Winterlord kids''. And some still exists...

I guess this has become the "least fun experience" thread because it's at this moment I feel I should share one of my experiences. You normally assume that a Kheldan player is good because they had to level to 50 to get the Kheldan right?

Well, there's two who are in Croatoa right now that together have the worst traits ever. Picture this scene: I'm invited blindly and think "ok, sure, why not". I join up and ask what we're doing and they say "come to mission".

I notice one's a Peacebringer, one's a Warshade. The Warshade is using a power I didn't have yet so I asked him about it and he said something about it being the best power ever and not to worry because he would teach me the "way of the warshade". (point to note, the power was opressive gloom but with a fancy WS name and I've always found it to be fairly worthless).

Anyway, we get 5 people on the team and enter and after one fight, the leader (the PB) says, "I need to go eat, go ahead" and parks himself in a safe spot while he soaks up exp.

The WS is the highest level member on the team so we require him to fight with us or risk painful death. However, every few minutes he suddenly disappears and we find him standing around after the fight apparently afk. We send him message after message asking what's going on, but can't kick him because our leader (the pb) who also happens to be a friend of his, is afk.

I get tired of him standing around and personally nothing makes me as mad as being ignored. So, the rest of the team and I are ready to fight a group. He's standing there not responding. I TP him into the middle of the group figuring that his "oppressive gloom" and high level would keep him alive and make him useful to us at least.

The second he popped out he's back at his keyboard and starts fighting and says "what'd you do that for!". Funny, he not only talks now, but fights too.

I think it was at this point that the rest of us abandoned the team. Can we say PL anyone?

RE: Funnest experience playing CoH/CoV tonight

I'm very concerned about this PL thing. I've been playing CoH now for close to a year, and my highest lvl toon just dinged 37. Before I found GameAmp just over a month ago, and the Double XP weekend, I found lvling so hard and tedious (the dreadful upper 20's and lower 30's).

I made a few friends teaming and was always taken aback by how quickly they lvled. It really puzzled me. I would take a week to gain a lvl, and these guys lvl 2 to 3 times a week, sometimes more. I couldn't figure it out. I would ask them,
"How do you lvl so quickly?", to which they usually said, "I have no life, I'm on here all the time."

Now some people can honestly do that, I have no doubt. But I had my first experience being Bridged and PLed, on Friday night. A few friends of mine (I really love playing with these guys, they rock; they all have a a lvl 50 or 2) invited me to join a pair of lvl 50's. They were going to farm a mish. I said sure, I would love to. I want to kick high lvl butt.

So we entered a Portal Mish from PI, and I was sk'ed by a lvl 50 tank. It was awesome, I was having a blast, my MA kicks were devastating, and the experience was very satisfying, (seeing those huge orange numbers floating up to heaven over my target was truly a sight to behold). The tank was awesome, I had some trouble keeping up with him cause he would herd the enemies into a container and pound the crap out of them.

In the middle of the fight he told me not to attack. I though ok, he just wanted to draw the aggro, so I held off, waited until he had herded a huge bunch, and then joined in the fight. Oh Oh, big mistake, he got annoyed. "Don't attack!"

Then I undestood what PL'ing was. I was apalled. I don't deserve to be PL'ed because I'm still a n00b in so many ways. Learning the game is a unique experience, and getting to know your powers, is also essential.

I believe well seasoned players, (like those who have already hit lvl 50) can be PL'ed, because they know the game well, (except if they are using an Epic AT for the first time).

I don't know about you guys, but my first time being PL'ed made me feel dirty.

RE: Funnest experience playing CoH/CoV tonight

It is a little easier for me to explain away the bridging for my empathy characters. I feel like I am still contributing. But to not attack and just sit there... yeah I would not get a good feeling from that.

I had someone ask Das Carrot to join a farming team. It was one of the train missions. So I arrive and there are 4 or 5 toons waiting at the entrance. the Spines Scrapper has me follow her through the mission keeping her buffed and healed while the rest just sit at the door and gather xp. I didn't mind doing this because I was contributing. I was keeping her alive and continually moving. When they cleared the mission, they decided to rinse and repeat.

I politely thanked them for the team and left. I didn't want to continue doing the same thing over and over without completing the task. That is not why I play. Right before I quit the team I saw they were waiting till they could find another healer. Maybe I wasn't that important to the team after all.

Aparently I level fast. I went from lvl 43 to 50 over the x2 exp weekend. and since then (two weeks ago), I have a lvl 30 Warshade, a lvl 11 PB, and a few miscellaneous characters up to 6 or so.

I plan to build a leveling guide as some point, but for now I'll give you these tips:

1) Do Task Forces. I originally thought these were bad because of how long they take, but they're actually no different than doing a bunch of missions in a row with the same team. But the experience is better, and you follow a much more interesting story plot. You also get badges that are used for accolades (or in the case of the respec trial, a respec).

2) Join big teams. Big teams have a tendancy to burn through missions very quickly. This is a good thing.

3) Join teams that are higher level than you. Go to zones where you are the lowest range character around and request to join a team. You're hoping to be the lowest member of a team.

4) When you SK, sk to the lowest level character on the team that will still allow you to be fully functional. For healers and support characters, you can sk very low and still be useful. For damage dealers, go as low as you can without becoming a liability by dying or having to be "saved" all the time.

5) Follow story arcs. You get a bonus to experience and a good enhancement every time you finish a story arc. When given a choice between two missions, make sure to pick the one that continues the story.

6) Work in self-contained zones. Hallows is kind of like this, but Striga and Croatoa are awesome because they're self contained. They're small zones that have very interesting things going on in them and all your missions and story arcs and contacts are all right there. This is especially true of Croatoa which I feel is the best zone in the game by far.

7) Sneak missions that you can. If it says "kill leader and crew" or find glowie, sneak the mission if you have stealth. Only kill what you have to. Mission bonuses are often worth more than killing everything and it's more interesting too. How often can you kill everything without it becoming tedious? Note that if you have no stealth powers, fly can work if you're in an outdoor mission or a high ceiling place like the boats in Striga or certain warehouses.

8) Hunt badges. Exploration badges now give experience equal to killing several enemies. They are also used for accolade powers so you should pick them up when you're close (or just run through each zone and get them all)

Learning the game is a unique experience, and getting to know your powers, is also essential.

so when you get PLed you are just supposed to watch? i'm not following either.

Pretty much. There are many definitions, but the one that basically covers it is when you receive xp with no risk to yourself. The typical scenario is for several high level folks to do all the 'arresting'. The lower levels are sidekicked by a 'bridge' to just within the level range that they will get xp. The bridges and their sidekicks hang out at the entrance, or, on a big map, might move a little to keep within the 300-yards (or whatever it is) radius in order to get xp. Outdoor portal missions containing Freakshow, or Warwolves, are favorite 'farming' missions for this.

Aparently I level fast. I went from lvl 43 to 50 over the x2 exp weekend. and since then (two weeks ago), I have a lvl 30 Warshade, a lvl 11 PB, and a few miscellaneous characters up to 6 or so.

You do lvl fast. I've noticed that, heh. But like I said, I have no doubt that some people can, and your post fully outlines why you lvl so fast.

I have now found that, when I solo my scrapper, I can actually lvl pretty fast too. I set my Difficulty to Unyielding, and I get pretty good DPS with my missions, (also because my scrapper has been respecced with a better balance of attack and defense).

But just standing there getting XP?!?

No, not for me.

Right on electro, the mish they were farming was a Freakshow Outdoor portal mish. After the tank logged, and I had gotten 1.5 bars of XP, I thanked them and left.

I guess that defenders or controllers are the most suitable AT's for PLing. They make a difference on any team, by buffing or debuffing, healing, holding and all that other good stuff they do. But do they really need you? Nah, I don't think so.

Maybe thejeni has something to say about this PL thing.

Blasters kill everything, usually before they get killed themselves. When it comes to dealing pain, a blaster has no equal. We just have a hard time taking our own medicine! So we love Tanks and 'fenders!

You know what's ironic though? People get kicked from most teams for Leeching.

Hmmm, Leeching and PL'ing? Is there a difference?

Oh wait, I get it! PL'ing is Consensual Leeching.

What a concept!!

RE: Funnest experience playing CoH/CoV tonight

I agree. I would rather be doing something than just standing there, even if I'm only gaining 1 xp per kill. I would rather quit the game before I stand and let someone else do all the work. That's just boring, even more so than grinding for 1xp per kill (not that I'd seriously do that). PLing is definatly not for me. I usually play 3 to 4 hours a night, and for the last few nights I've been soloing my missions on Heroic. The baddies have been mostly 1 level below me (I'm 35 atm). Even like that, I've been able to gain almost a full level in 3 days (Illusion/Empathy controller).

I was going to post on this very issue. I've been doing the contacts in Founder's Falls recently, and I'll tell you what, it is such a pain to have to run all over paragon city doing the missions. Even with teleport, it is tedious to have to keep having missions that are 2 zones away. And on top of that, before you can call them, you have to keep headin out to the farthest reaches of the Falls just to get back to your contact. So yeah, it's better to do missions in a place where you know they're all going to be in that one area.

I have found this to be quite useful. I know Cryptic says stealthing missions is bad (hence the stealth nerf that was recently implemented), but I used it anytime I can. Lately I've been soloing a lot of my older missions to get the contacts out of the way. It is so much more satisfying to be able to stealth to the glowie, drop a Phantom Army and Phantasm to clear the area if need be and be done with it, than to have to clear all on every mission every time.

I just figure to each their own... I don't do it. I can't stand the tought of not helping the team out. Hell if the minions are all purple, I will only one run one mission w/ the team, then leave. If I can't hit them, there is no point in me being there.

I do have to say, you can usually tell who the PL'ed toon is when you are on a team. This is the only problem I have with it. I hate having a full team wipe because someone doesn't know how to play their character. And if you are PL'ed you really don't know the in's and out's of the character.

I know a lot of people w/ their 2nd or 3rd (or 50th *grin*) toon want to skip ahead a bit. Maybe just get up to their travel power really quick, but I think that you still miss out on so much learning w/ your toon. I know exactly how every single power on Liz works. I know when to use them, when not to, and when to run. If I hadn't had all the expierences playing her, I wouldn't know these things.

But if that is what makes you enjoy the game.. go ahead. I wouldn't adivse ever paying for it with RL money (many people will do it for free), because you take a lot of risks that way. Risks that you really can't do anything about if things go bad. The people over on the official CoH site aren't going to do a thing if someone steals your account from you when you paid them to PL your character.

All I ask, is if you are going to be PL'ed, make sure you play your character solo for a good bit before joining any teams. That way they aren't paying for you to learn how to play a character you should know how to play.
