| Foiled Hijack Attempt from UK to US |
|
|
|
Anyone heard about what happened over in the UK last night? Pretty scary, considering what happened almost 5 years ago now. In case you haven't heard about it, here was what happened:
British Law Enforcement caught wind of a plan to bring down ten planes going from the UK to the US. They went out and arrested 20-21 (can't remember which) suspicious looking men. All of them carried with them liquid explosives disguised as sports drinks. They also had 10$ flash cameras with them, which were to be used to detonators. Unfortunately, these were not all who were supposed to be in the plan to blow up the 10 planes. The 29 y/o ring leader of the group has not yet been found. Today Airport security was on Code Orange and it was on Code Red in terminals coming from the UK. There were NO liquids or electronics allowed on the airplane today, with the exception of Baby Formulas and Rx Medications. The Mothers had to have with them a baby and had to drink the Formula to let them know it was milk. The Rx prescriptions had to be for the person who was carrying it.

Its scary times we live in. What happend to the good old days when people could just get on planes and take them from point A to point B without having to worry about a group of religious fanatics trying to either hijack or blow up the planes?

Forgive me if I'm being snarky, but I think this is actually a somewhat serious topic. Snakes will not kill thousands of people, but terrorists will.

I'm not quite sure why I didn't already read about this, but does anyone know what the motivation was for the planned attack?

It could have been any number of reasons. Islamic Terrorists hate the US passionately and would never hesitate to attack us. These people WANT to die for their religion. This will not be any easy enemy to fight.

If this is reminding you of 9-11, it shouldn't. A sports drink bomb is just not the right weapon for taking over planes and forcing them to crash into buildings. You can only use the bomb once. To take over the plane, you need a weapon you can use over and over, to prove you are serious.
The terrorists were probably planning to just blow up the planes. Even for that, they had the wrong kind of bomb. No stable liquid explosive could do that reliably with only 1 liter. The bomb would have done some internal damage and injured or killed a few passangers, but the plane would probably be able to land and most of the passengers would survive.
These guys are terrorists, though. If those were incendiary bombs, they would certainly have caused a lot of terror, which is what a terrorist usually wants. Setting a plane on fire also has a much greater chance than a direct blast of bringing the plane down. Of course, in that case they wouldn't have needed the cameras because any liquid incendiary could be lit with a match.
Actually, a few minutes after I posted this, I walked past a cooler with several brands of sports drinks in it and suddenly realized the true horror of the terrorist plan. They might be onto something, depending on which brand's bottle they used. If anyone else noticed this, it might be a good idea NOT to post about it.

This is what I know. Despite the capability of said weapon, there's no telling what they could've done. After reading a couple of reports, the terrorists were supposedly planning to take over the planes and crash them simultaneously in a coordinated event. The reports didn't mention targets...But I didn't really expect them to.
This is obviously a serious matter, but people tend to calm themselves with humor. You do what you can to maintain in today's climate. I get my fix from reading about politicians that want to cut military budgets...Good call, fellas. :P

I went snooping around CNN and found The article. Its nothing that isnt already known but it does have some videos in it for those interested. I think i watched Bush's speach like four times because i think its funny how he looks like hes always staring directly into the sun.

I honestly don't think these terrorists believe in the religion they practice...I think they just want to become martyrs. That seems to be a respected thing over there, at least between those that share the same ideals.
Despite all their efforts, however, I think America will persevere. We've recovered from 9/11 and I believe we'll recover from whatever else they throw at us. America is stronger than they seem to think..and I don't mean military or weapon-wise. I think all 9/11 served to do is make us that much stronger. The memory of all those who lost their lives keeps us going on. I, for one, will never forget the sacrifices all those people made and the pain those left behind had to endure and still are enduring. It's the ability to band together as a country that makes us strong. We truly are the United States. If only the rest of the world could do the same.
I don't expect world peace to ever come but if people would let go of their constant lust for world dominance the world would be a much better place. I highly doubt that'll ever happen, though..at least not completely.
