HELP!!! 

Somethings going on with my beloved CoH. When ever I click on the CoH desktop icon, a pop-up comes up and says "you can't run this program directly, please run CoHupdater instead" WTF! No matter how many times I click on the icon (including the test server), that damn thing keeps showing up and it won't let me into the game! The updater itself don't even come up! I checked my PlayNC account and all is well over there. Can anyone PLEASE help me?! What's going on?!

have you tried clicking on the updater from the coh folder rather than the shortcut on the desktop, you may have damaged the shortcut some how and that is why you are getting the error message

Yes I have and I still get a pop-up. Only it's the one where Windows needs to find the program that created it, or I need to find it myself, so I end up getting diddly :(

Oh, more bad news. When I click on the test server icon a pop-up comes up saying that the file has been moved and the shortcut serves no purpose. The problem here is, I never moved it, touched it, or did anything to or with the test server or the actual game itself. I worry that I may have been hacked and had my files messed with :(This all just came up out of the blue). It worked fine yesterday, both the test server and the actual game were working perfectly fine, then today it just got a funky and this whole mess started. I checked for viruses and nothing came up. Now I'm really confused.

Umm, theorhetically, you could borrow a copy of someone else's game and install it. Or reinstall yours. Or buy a new copy, install it, and return it by explaining that you need to have the key and you are returning the whole thing, with the key, and they can call NCSoft and make sure the key doesn't get used.

Anyhow, all of the important stuff (your characters) are saved on the servers. You can go to an internet cafe anywhere in the US and play CoH. So, my theory is that you can reinstall the game.



Rate other people's posts to give them feedback. I will frequently rate the first post of a new topic at least a 3, because that person is keeping the forums busy. I also will rate posts on how helpful they were to me, or how helpful I deem them to others. Please rate my posts to let me know if they have been useful to you.

yeah i would say you should uninstall then reinstall the game... i know it sucks to have to download all those patches again, but sometimes files get corrupt and the only way to fix them is to reinstall it.

If you havent already done so you might want to check for viruses and spyware before uninstalling. A couple good programs for searching and removing spyware are Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy.

You might also want to download and run Hijack This. If your not familiar with this program and need help analyzing the log file you can submit it to this site for an adequate analysis.


If worse comes to worse and you dont have the disks you can download the CohUpdater from ftp://coh:client@client.coh.com/Coh.zip and do a fresh install of CoH.

Okay, it sucks but if I have to reinstall the game in order to start playing it again, I'll do it. But before I do that, I have a few questions. Will all of my characters be deleted if I do that? Or will they (as someone else said earlier) be saved to the servers. Second, will I have to go through the whole PlayNC account thing again? Registering CoH and filling in all of the billing info and credit card number? Thanks for the help everybody :) I really appreciate it.

All of your characters are saved on the servers so no need to worry about any of them missing.

The Only thing I have found that I have had to re-adjust are the video settings. You may find you have to do this as well if you use settings other than the default screen size in the game.

All of your attack bars, friends lists etc. are also saved on the servers in CoH which is great because I have played some games where they aren't and have had to go about trying to re-create these after a re-install.

You won't have to go through the whole registering CoH think again. As a matter of fact you definitely DONT want to do that. All you wan't to do is log in as you normally would and let the CohUpdater run its updates.

I just re-installed CoH yesterday on my conmputer after doing some upgrades and deciding to do a fresh install of Windows while I was at it to cure some nagging and very annoying issues with Windows XP SP2 while I was at it.

Thx a lot too those who replied :) I reinstalled CoH and everything is working perfectly now. All of my characters are fine and all is well. Turns out my files were hacked, my friend who knows WAY more about computers than I do found it along with a message from the person (or persons) who sent it "Open the door you mother f*****". Whatever. He helped me delete it and such and now everything is back to normal :) Thx again to all of those who replied, I really appreciate it.

I say this alot to people, but get a decent firewall and antivirus, and run things like spybot regularly along with whole system scans, especially if you download or surf alot on the net, make sure if you're using Outlook or Outlook express that it works with your antivirus! All that helps prevent crap like hacked files
