i started playing Gw about 1 month after it came out and loved it--been playing ever since..i have both factions and prophicies and i would have to say--u need to get faction..
- First off with factions you get all the original proffesions along with the added Ritualist and aasasin which prophicies does not offer, that alone is a huge + for factions-also if u dont own factions you cant do the alliance battles, and last but not least you you will level your toon alot faster in factions..... hope this helps out for ya.. redeemer of blood or arising spirit

I'd say in this order.
Prophecies (the first GW) has a slower pace so you get used to the game mechanism easier; and the skill quests give you a lot of skills so you can experiment with builds. However, the control tutorial is a bit hasted.
Factions has a more advanced tutorial part, but advancing is faster, making it a bit harder to keep up with that (IMHO). You'll have to buy almost all skills, so if you want to experiment with builds you have to farm a lot to buy skills. (I just can't afford with my canthan characters to spend 1K on a skill that I probably find unuseful for me after 2-3 use...)
Nightfall hasn't been published yet, and AFAIK the 15th September date is just a preorder publish, the game will arrive later. Do you really want to wait that long?
If you have a lot of good friends who help you out with build advices, ingame help and maybe some initial funds, then Factions should be a good idea; if you're a total "stranger" to the community then I'd suggest Prophecies, because it's easier to cope with the first parts alone there. (Just a hint: in Factions the party size is 8 after about the second mission; in Prophecies the party size is 4 until the 3rd mission and 6 until about the 12th...)
Though I don't know you personally. (I have a friend, I'd sugest him Factions without thinking, even though he never played with MMOs...)

I would suggest Factions. I started out playing Guild Wars in April, after buying Faction. I have finished the game with several characters, and recently I bought Prophecies online.
I like Factions the best. You have more professions, and the look and feel of it is like the next generation of 'Prophecies'.
I also like to play Prophecies, but more because it gives me access to another world, with lots of places to go to, and to farm in.
The worldmap of Prophecies is much bigger than the Factions map, still I love to roam in the Faction's world. It's more impressive, in my opinion.
just my view for you :D

Regardless of which you buy ... if you get hooked like me ... you will have all three once they are available, simply to expand the possibilities.
I can never think of anything catchy to write here.

The truth is, it's all based on personal opinion.
I started approx. a week after it came out, and from there on i was totally addicted.
Prophecies in my opinion is better, but i'm also a sucker for storyline and graphics. There are some really nice places in Tyria. However, it takes a long time to level up in it, and you probably wont be level 20 until about halfway through the story.
Factions on the other hand, has it's perks. The assassin and ritualist are a nice add. It has a nice oriental theme to it. The faction portion of it is based on two real world places (Echovald Forest aka Petrifeid Forest, and the Jade Sea.) However, it rushes you into it, and you're level 20 by only playing for like 5 hours. The story is alright, and they kind of lacked on graphics.
Nightfall looks promising storywise. It has the Dervish and Paragon, both already heavily criticized classes. The style is egyptian, which is alright, but it also means you can slack a little bit graphics wise (how many different colors can sand be? Let's count shall we? 1...2...3...4...4 shades!)
In the end it's all personal opinion. I vote to take all three in hand, but if i had to choose one, i would choose Factions. (Though i still say proph.)
Rein Garamonde-N/E-pyro Burn, baby, burn! (Completed everything, Finished capping N and E skills. Patiently waiting for Nightfall.)
Noel Klaine-E/Me-Hydro, Rock you like a hurricane.(Finished Cantha, getting there in tyria.)
Rosa Chere-R/E-Interupt Spiker. Shocking.(Finished everything, no more caps for Ranger, waiting for my lightning caps. Patiently waiting for Nightfall.)
Apollo Aileron-W/E-Geo. Like a Rock.(Working with brother, just made it to LA.)
Shadow Lanford-A/Mo. Stabby Stabby. (Surpringly capable assassin, better than most tanks. Finishing up cantha.
Galuf Crowley-Rt/Mo. Wounds, what are those? (on way to kaineg. once again, working with brother.)

The first guild wars offers you the full game to play. Friends you make can join in your missions without having the luxon/kurzick split. The chane in scenery is nice too. There is only a few dark areas. The alliamce battles is probably the most fun, yet because of faction farming there is getting to be more ticks. Ticks are the ones who want the factions the others earn by scoring a kill in battle and do nothing --most don't even leave the starting point to collect easy factions. Factions is also mostly in a slum setting. So I prefer the first guild wars for many reasons, but like factions for alliance battles.

Actually the theme of Nightfall is North African, with 3 main areas... One of the main areas is based on Egypt, the other looks like Istanbul or Morocco, and is called Istan (I wonder how they came up with the name), and the third looks like Babylon, with Hanging Gardens and all.
Don't expect it to be just desert. ;)

Greetings to Dalton and Redeemer. Welcome to our lil corner of the world called Gamemp. :)
Each chapter so far has something different to offer.
I bought Prophecies in June 2005 and have been hooked since. :p Prophecies is more towards the PvE side of things with a vast area to explore.
Factions was oriented more to the PvP side of the game and that's why you level up so easily and just buy your skills. It's a smaller map and also a different continent with a different feel altogether.
Both offer different experiences and styles.
I am so addicted that I would probably be twitching if I did not have or skipped a chapter. :D

I'm hoping you linked your Prophecies and Factions CDkeys into 1 account so that you have full access for both of them. That's really the best way to do things from my perspective; for PvE you have a massive amount to do for each character, and for PvP you have the full range of skills from both campaigns for every character, too.
For myself, I'm glad I started in Prophecies rather than Factions. Factions has a much better tutorial area, but a tutorial alone doesn't teach you to play well. You need the hands-on experience that the fast leveling in Factions just doesn't give you. I also dislike the Factions storyline (it's easy to tell exactly what is going to happen by the end of the third mission), the scenery, and a couple other things (namely how powerful boss enemies are in Factions), and Prophecies has a lot more content for the PvE side than Factions does as well, so Prophecies is superior.
Still, good luck and good times are to be had in both games, so get yourself hooked like the rest of us and you'll be on GW a year from now :)
