So today our Solar System got smaller, despite the fact that the Universe is constantly and infinitely expanding.
The most recently discovered planet Pluto, was stripped of its planetary status. Poor thing! It's now a Dwarf (huh, CoH in everything I read or see).

This is just another conspiracy initiated by the shadow organization that secretly runs our puppet government - Disney. They finally got their revenge over the copyright infringing planet. :P
What a pity...It's always the easiest planet to remember...Besides Earth that is.

Technically speaking, the universe didn't really get smaller. It has just changed in the eyes of human beings. And who really defines what a planet is anyway? Despite the fact that human beings say she is no longer a planet, we can still marvel at some of her features, just as we did before. Status only really matters to us, nothing else in the universe really cares.

I totally agree with blackphoenix. How are they going to teach the planets to my kids in school now???
teacher:"Ok kids we have eight primary planets, and Pluto's not because it doesn't have an eliptical orbit so that makes it a dwarf planet!?!?!"
What makes it so these guys get to decide what is a planet and what is not? I mean for over fifty years Plutos been a planet with its orbit the way that it is and nobody said anything until this scientist or that astronomer said "you know what I don't think Pluto should be a planet because it doesn't have an eliptical orbit!!!">:p
Oh well I think that they should have left it the way it was and maybe included Ceres and Xena depending on their orbits and weather they had moons or not, that was what they used to help determine planet status back when I was a kid.
Sorry for the ramble, I just hate change!:(

See...Besides the fact that you're posting at 1:30 in the afternoon, I can tell that you're home schooled by this comment. You learn early in high school that status is everything. :P

hey mal, now that its status has been degraded, do you think that the devs will change the accuracy in game to compensate for the smaller solar system?

I'm not sure. I think the Science Devs should've put this on the Test Solar System before issuing the media patch. You should never nerf such an important aspect of the universe without a testing phase.

Actually I've got about 2 weeks left before I go back :-p. And btw I am homeschooled. You're good =D. Status is everything in alot of places, but like I said, the universe doesn't care whether we think it's Medusa or if it's the most beautiful thing ever created. It takes a long time for it to change and we will NEVER be able to impact the universe to any extent, except our little planet and maybe Mars a little bit.

Well it's of little consolation, but they did add 3 more dwarf planets to our solar system at the same time, Pluto's moon, Charon, Ceres and the aptly-named(?) 20036-UB313, so that really gives us 12 now...some of them are just smaller...

Given the incomprehensible size of the universe, it really wouldn't have any noticable impact on the whole of it.
Remember, we're in a planetary system surrounding an extremely average yellow star. There are billions and billions of other stars extremely similar to our own, with billions and billions of other stars extremely different from our own...our little lump of heavy elements really doesn't mean a whole lot in the grand scheme of things. :)

Well the more I think about it, the more I dislike this development. It's not that I don't like change, but I mean should Pluto really be booted, just because she marches to a different beat?
I mean after all, what kind of universe would this be, if everything thing in it had to conform or be excluded? So she smaller, so her orbit is oblong. I say that makes her special, I say it makes her different.
Mercury: is closest to the sun.
Venus: is Earth's little sister.
Earth: has life, so she's really special!
Mars: is the Red Planet that has signs of former life.
Jupiter: is our giant with a permanent storm that's bigger than Earth itself.
Saturn: has her pretty rings
Uranus: has her name (much to the delight of little boys everywhere!)
Neptune: is the outermost planet of the gas giants. (hold your noses!)
and
Pluto: well she was different, furthest from the sun at some points but gets closer for a good tan every now and again. Small and defiant!
I think she represents the minority, with individuality, and she still has a right to be there just like every other minority in our universe.
Long live Pluto: the 9th Planet!!!

check. so its ok if we blow up giant meatiers ready to collide with earth to save ourselfs in case it means destroying other plantary bodies.
and on a small hijacking note, does anyone else remember the mcdonalds commercial that came out about the same time as armageddon? it goes something like this:
guy 1: oh mcdonalds came out with a new bigger burger!
guy 2: look at htat in the sky, its a metoer!
guy 1: it sure is meatier! mmmmmmmmm. slurp slurp grumble grumble munch munch mmmmmmm...
i remember walking around my house responding to everything with 'it sure is meatier! mmmmmm"

Keep in mind that, even if we could blow up a gigantic meteor with nukes, if it did hit Venus, the normal temperature INSIDE the atmosphere is hot enough to melt lead, so the entry heat would be unbelievably hot. It might well melt before it ever hit the surface of Venus. For the second thing, Venus is a fairly big planet. A gigantic meteor wouldn't change it's orbit very much, and it certainly wouldn't make Venus hit Mercury. Besides, it would be the meteor that changed the universe, not us, right? :-p
Anyone notice this is becoming an entirely new topic? lol

Man, you scared me. I saw the topic and I was like "oh my god, what happened to Pluto? Did it blow up or something?!" Damn scientists defining things to their messed up standards. I still say its MVEMJSNUP all the way (didn't Neptune used to be in front of Uranus? like its on some sort of oblong orbit, right?)

Okay, okay...I think the word "never" is being thrown around far too much. You can't say "never" about things, guys. Once upon a time, man would NEVER travel around the world. Man would NEVER travel to the moon. Computers would NEVER be used as a household item. Females and minorities would NEVER have the right to vote. I would NEVER get thrown out of Dairy Queen for sucking soft serve out of the machine. All of these things have happened, and we still continue to break boundaries every day. Is it improbable that a meteor of monumental proportions would enter our solar system and careen toward a planet? - Yep...But it's possible. Is it improbable that said meteor would be shattered by nuclear warheads, which caused its pieces to plummet into other planets forcing them closer to our small yellow sun? - Yep...But it's possible. Is it improbable that said planets would enter the gravitational pull of the sun, and cause such impact that sun explodes causing a massive chain of events that eventually ended in the loss of a quarter of the universe (which we supposedly can't alter)? Yep...But it's possible.
You can't sit back and think that things aren't possible. Our world has been molded by events that were deemed impossible. Not even the ridiculously vast expanse of space is free from our radically altering indifference. :P

my kids will never be home schooled. i think all kids should go to public school to learn how to take verbal abuse, suck it up, get thicker skin, learn about the birds and the bees, play school sports, get nailed with those hardass rubber dodgeballs, and check out girls/boys in the hallways and learn to go #2 in public places.

Yeah all that is good to learn, but what about the educational part? If your kids focus on that, then they'll never be able to make it to college. Yes, make sure they know about the birds and the bees and that life will not always be peachy keen, but make sure they can also go to college and do what they want when they grow up. It's important to get both the good and bad into a child's life so that they don't get a huge shock to their system when they get out in the world and find that some people aren't very nice. That's my philosophy on it.

well i didnt mention the educational portion because i figured that was implied with any type of schooling. and to some people, the ability to develop their social skills and interactions with others is in much more need of development then their intelligence.

I know that you have good intentions, bubba, but I think you're over-estimating the value of book knowledge. I have to admit that I'd love to go back to high school and actually care about my grades, but I still went to college, got a 3-year scholarship, and graduated with a degree and a commission in the military. I don't disagree with your parents for deciding to home school you...I'm just not sure how well it will prepare you for the future. In a world that's already quickly moving to seclusion outside of virtual means (i.e. the internet), I think social interaction in the early stages of life has become much more crucial to the development of a person. Also, I liken home schooled children in life to unexperienced people in relationships. If you haven't lived it when there was nothing at stake (i.e. relationships in high school where you aren't hinging your entire life on romantic decisions), then you won't have the experience to make the right choices when it really counts. My girlfriend's sister is in this position right now. Throughout high school, she was sort of prudish about dating. Now, she's in one of her first "serious" relationships with another person that married (and is divorcing) his high school sweetheart, and they're just barreling headlong into disaster. They're talking about marriage, and this dude hasn't even finished his first divorce. She has a full scholarship that she's thinking about dropping because she's in love. It's these types of situations that need to be experienced in the early, mid, and late teens so that you have enough knowledge to keep them from happening when you're older and have to consider your future and career. Finally, I applaud home schooling for its educational merit...But I give it a big thumbs down for life lessons. There's a fine line there, bubba, and I'm sure you'll see what I'm talking about in 4 or 5 years.
Oh yeah...It's crappy that Pluto isn't a planet any more. :P

Only 300 people desided that the former planet known as Pluto would lose it's status. This is out of 2,500 people that attended the conference, everybody was arguing about it.

OK, sing, maybe its best you learned this from someone ur age... Book smarts... not that important. I consider myself a smart person, and so do all my friends. but do i let that get to me? no. i have my friends because they teach me all about how to interact with my peers, and also how best to get kicked out of grocery stores and twenty minutes later get kicked out of grocery store parking lots.
I personally feel that the public school system is an excellent way to teach children about life... the primary lesson being that life is unfair. It really is, but a great way to teach a child that is by having a large bully push you out of the lunch line when u skipped breakfast and have to excericise for the next two hours in the scorching sun, and all the ignorant penisheads in line have the saying "you left the line, you lost ur spot" then i have to start all over again at the f***ing back of the line, and by the time i get my lunch i have three minutes to eat it before the bell rings to get back to class. life is unfair. So, cheat when you know you cant get caught.
For college, i am not ready. But if u go into college with an abundance of book smarts, why r u even in college? college is, IMO, the way for public school kids to catch up to home school kids. at the end of college, both have roughly the same amount of book smarts, but one of them has waaaaaay more advances social skillz.

You dont know what ur missing ;-)
Pluto lost it's status! that totally sux. at least it has dwarf friends now, Ceres, Charon, and whats-his-face. Those four can all get together and play D&D in their mom's basement while the other planets are out at the party.
also, one final off-topic statement: Havnt signs of life been spotted on someone's moon, Europa? i remember hearing about how it has Water under the ice, plus underwater volcanoes adding heat to the equation. the only thing missing now is for them to evolve and argue over whether they eveolved or not as a mermaid society, while meantime humans have developed superpowers and traveled to alternate universes and brought back alternate universe diseases in which everyone got sick and had to take a personal day, but then the next day everyone woke up feeling really refreshed and ready to get back to work and never traveled to an alternate universe again so we dont bring back any diseases and for some strange reason everyone is really happy and rainbows are a common occurence and nobody takes them for granted.
BTW, this is my first post in which nothing was stated inside parenthsis(SP?)

Wow, we have officially begun to micro-manage the Solar System.
I've been watching this unfold for a while now. Dilbert's boss now runs the Solar System. DOOM!
On the plus side, maybe we can get a more PC name for Uranus now!
