About to the end of my patience...

I'm hoping someone can help me with this, because the alternative is to quit Guild Wars, and I don't really want to do that. But lately I've had so much trouble with the blasted thing freezing so much, and I'm about to the end of my patience with the whole thing. It's frozen three times in the past twenty-four hours, frozen the whole computer, and I have to shut down the whole thing and turn it back on again, losing whatever else I have going in the background if it's unsaved. Typically I don't run too much with Guild Wars, but it's still extremely trying on my patience. This should in no way happen.

I have an NVIDIA GeForce 6200 TurboCache, which I've updated the drivers for, I set to the settings suggested by another thread that dealt with NVIDIA problems, even tuned down the in-game graphics a bit, and I still have this confounded problem.

I'm just about ready to give up and quit playing Guild Wars because I simply refuse to go through another mission, get to the end, and then freeze and have nothing to show for my time in that mission. I'm sick of it. My computer was built for me late last year and is a very good computer that surpasses the system requirements. Guild Wars didn't do this until fairly recently either. I was going to put down some money to preorder Nightfall, but this has changed my mind totally.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm nearly to the point where I'm just so fed up with this that it isn't worth the effort anymore. No other program has this problem. And Guild Wars only began recently. I'm about to the end of my rope.

or a virus itself

RE: About to the end of my patience...

Update everythings drivers:

MotherBoard
Sound
Direct X
Gfx

This fixed my problems with an x800 Radeon and may solve issues with other cards.

If you can't fix it get onto ANet support, they gave me loads of ideas for mine and pointed me to some great, free diagnostics tools. In the end it turned out to be heat, the damn thing was too hot!

Edit: What is it with me and typos today?!? :s

RE: About to the end of my patience...

My extremely serious lag problem was fixed by updating my sound drivers, went from being almost unplayable to smooth as silk, you could try that if you haven't already.

I too am having lag issue (freeze up issue) it normally lasts about 5 minutes or so quite annoying

but to your issue try running a spyware to make sure system is free of them, also try reseting your router / modem

other then that beats the hell out of me Moonmonday, but I sure dont wanna see you leave GW

RE: About to the end of my patience...

Did it just start after updating the drivers? If so you might want to uninstall those and reinstall and older version of them. I had to do that once as the nvidia drivers made the world textures all blocky. It looked like crap.

On the other hand, it sounds like a lot of other people are having issues with GW atm, so you might just be better off to sit it out for a while.

I second that. I never had any problems at all until the last couple of GW updates. Now I've been getting the James Bond errors (007) and pretty heavy lag at times. Last night it froze up on me for the first time.

I think its more a GW problem then a problem with your PC but I couldn't say for sure.

RE: About to the end of my patience...

Anet support was as useless as a third nipple I'm afraid, just told me the exact things I'd already done.

I would try updating the other drivers but I cannot for the life of me find anything to update my ACPI Uniprocessor PC board, my Realtek AC'97, and so forth. If someone could help I'd be very grateful, or if this isn't my motherboard and sound card at all, I have no idea where else to look (I looked at the system's hardware device manager.)

It's not a virus as I scan everything incoming and regularly check for viruses, spyware, and so forth. It may be my virus scanner running in background; however, it has never given me a problem up to now. It's Symantec, incidentally. But it's never given me a bit of trouble.

Then again, neither has Guild Wars before this past week or two...

Any ideas or help would be most appreciated.

To find out what your motherboard is, download cpu-z(download link is in the top right, named CPU-Z 1.36).

Unzip it and run CPU-Z....it takes a few seconds before you actually see it.(about 10 seconds in my computer).

Then click on Mainboard and it will tell you everything you need to know about the motherboard, the manufacturer, the model, the chipsets.

You can go to the manufacturers website and download the needed drivers, but usually downloading the drivers from whoever makes the Chipset is more up-to-date. My chipset personally is made by N-Vidia, so I update mine from their website. If you need help finding the right ones, post either A) A screenshot or B) The Chipset info, both the first and second column. (mine for example says [nVidia] [nForce3 250] )

Hope this helps, I too had troubles before with GW after one of their updates(when they changed some sound things). And it seemed to just stotp happening after awhile(updating drivers in MY case, didnt help).

Also, usually the Motherboard drivers include ethernet, chipset, sound drivers(if you use onboard sound). and quite a few others.

You guys think hardware, I'm thinking spyware and adware and viruses.

Is your virus protection up to date?

Do you have spyware protection software, like spysweeper? (Spysweeper is great, I love it.)

Checked for viruses lately?

Spyware and viruses can really slow down your computer, even if you do have the latest up-to-date hardware.

I occasionally get the mother of all Lags because i run Gw and iTunes at the same time, now iTunes isn't doing anything to it, but a Podcast i once subscribed to sometimes loads, and it was very hard to notice it was downloading while i was playing.

RE: About to the end of my patience...

My pc used to freeze up when I was playing games- it turned out that the input to the monitor had been changed to from digital to analog. Then before factions was introduced my lag got worse because of the updates they were installing so after Nightfall comes out it might be better. Most recently my hard drive got too hot to be able to run so it might be the heat. Not sure about any of this just guessing.

RE: About to the end of my patience...

it could be just your pc getting clogged up through time, i'm talking windows. everytime you visit a website,it downloads all the stuff on the page and stores it on your pc,so you dont have to do it again, and everytime install a piece of software it writes to the registry file, and even if you uninstall it, sometimes the information is still there. both of these can seriously affect your pc's performance if they get to a point.

check your hard drive space, if its low, like only 5-20 gig free, then you could do with freeing up some space.

run the defrag tool over night under start > accessories > system tools, that may help a tad, but make sure you turn off any screen savers/programs/anti virus software when you do it.

not to sound too harsh, cos i'm sure your proud of your pc, but from the parts you've mentioned it doesnt sound like hugely powerful pc, fine when new and fresh, but after awhile it will slow. the problem with turbocache graphics cards is that they use system memory, if your pc's motherboard doesnt have a lot of ram, then it will affect your graphics card performance.
ideally you want a minimum of 512 meg of ram to run everything at once smoothly.

about once every 6 months i re-install windows cos it gets clogged up with crap and slows down too much for my taste.

oh, and anti-virus software, too much of a good thing is bad, sometimes that can even screw up your pc, so if your just playing guild wars, try turning it off.

phew, long post, hope it helps, anymore questions just ask :)

RE: About to the end of my patience...

Problems like that are often solved with easy actions:

dns is overflood (can cause freezin because the game might lose communication to the internet):
type "cmd" in run
type in: ipconfig/flushdns

all your dns servers will be free.

Updating your graphics cars once a month is something to concider. they might add new algorithms that older drivers might not be able to run

Same states for sound drivers as EG already stated.

Another thing can be that your harddrive is fragmented. Try to defrag your harddrive. When information is scattered to much it can cause delays in loading bits and bytes and thus cause freeze in high demanding processes.

MSN and GW dont mix well, as i have encountered recently. Maybe you have both running?

As stated before; scan for virusses and spyware. They can clutter your internet traffic and cause a loss in information transfer.

If this all fails; just removing and reinstalling GW might work. It could be that your datafile is corrupted but not notices by the exe. Whenever that flaw passes it can cause freeze.

If all else fails (lol; this is what i usually do or at least every 3 months, but only do this when you know what you're doing) format your drives and completely reinstall your computer. Sometimes there are so many programms installed, reinstalled, edited, customized, that dataclusters are corrupted. This (in my experiance) comes to light as little nudges in your system, but eventually can cause massive lagg on the i-net; freezing programs, and weird error messages.

I hope this helps a bit, and good luck on solving the problem (and please do not quit GW :D )

RE: About to the end of my patience...

I'm not sure if this would work but try to uninstall the game, restart your pc and then reinstall the game, cause it might be one of the files within the game might be corrupted. When one of my other pc games stops fuctioning properly i just uninstall it, delete any game file left behind then reinstall and that fixes the problem.

1. Unistall guild wars

2. go into program files and check for any files that has
to do with guild wars and delete them. when you
uninstall a program there are usually 1 or 2 files that
gets left behind, delete them.

3. Restart you pc and check again to see if there are any
guild war files still there, if not then reinstall guild
wars.

The reason for #2 is when i uninstalled a game and then reinstalled it without checking for leftover files, the two same game programs start conflicting with each other.

*WARNING*
I can't guarantee this will work cause i'm not no tech genuis but from my own experiance this is what i do when one of my games stops responding. Good luck and i hope to see you soon in game moonmonday.

Ok, based off the screenshots, all the drivers for the AX8 series can be found here

Make sure you at least download the Chipset and Audio drivers. The others you can download if you see fit(for instance, the SATA drivers you really only need if you have a SATA driver). Downloading and installing the others wont hurt, but if your not using whatever drivers you install then you dont truely need to update them. Although you might want to download them all so you can rule out any motherboard drivers. Its ashame you dont have an nVidia chipset cause they put all their drivers in a single package to make it easy. :P

Hope all this helps.

RE: About to the end of my patience...

That happened to me a while ago. I know it's not my pc cuz i build it last year and all my other games work fine. First thing i did was uninstall then reinstall guild wars. Didn't do it for me after.

Later on my bf pc did the same thing with gw, he did same work fine. I think it was when we downloaded a new patch or new area that a file wasn't downloaded right or something.

Well anyways, if you havent tried it, i suggest trying it. Work for me, hope it will work for u :D

RE: About to the end of my patience...

My PC is perfect for what I want it to do. I didn't build a super gaming PC, I built a PC to do my graphics work on and also incidentally play some games. I could even run GW perfectly well on my old PC, with worse hardware than this one; it has fully sufficient statistics.

Further, I already defragged, that was one of the first things I did because I know it can bog down a computer like nobody's business. It didn't help. The CPU also isn't overheating, and I do know how to check that, but just in case I did clean out the fans. Still, they seemed to be running smoothly and had accumulated very little dust since my last cleaning.

I unfortunately can't find any drivers period that are more recent than 2003 for my sound card, if what I'm finding on the system profile is correct, so it's likely as updated as it's going to get unless someone else might be able to help me find some more recent ones or ones that would work.

This is very useful, I'll try this!

I will check back more regularly to the site, although I did update the driver literally a few days ago to the very latest one that was in turn only released a few days before.

QUOTE

Could you help me find drivers for my sound card? The device, at least of what I know, is what I listed above, but I can't find any updated drivers for it at all. Any help would be so much appreciated!

As I've said several times before, it isn't this. I'm very mindful of viruses and spyware. I have already ruled this out as an option, unless it manages to miss three different sweeps with three different virus scanners and three different spyware/adware eliminators.

QUOTE
If this all fails; just removing and reinstalling GW might work. It could be that your datafile is corrupted but not notices by the exe. Whenever that flaw passes it can cause freeze.

I may give this a try. It'll be probably my last ditch option, but if it keeps happening I think there's nothing else but to do it.

Thanks so much, it does help! Hopefully doing all this will improve things. If not though, I don't know what other option I'll have unfortunately. :/ But let's not look on the bad side...

So, about those sound drivers...anyone? :)

RE: About to the end of my patience...

If you updated your drivers, defrag, scan for virus and it never crashes unless your playing gw. I don't think you should keep reinstalling as a last option. If you can use your pc at anytime and it doesn't crash while your running any other application, programs, game then the problem must be from a file in guild wars. I'd really try reinstalling before doing anything else that may just give you more headache and frustration. It takes long to reinstall both games, yes i know i reinstall becuz the game crash like yours, but was well worth it :D

Good luck anyways :D

RE: About to the end of my patience...

Moonmonday, it's an annoying a problem, I know. I have this headache almost everyday maintaining 25 PC's in the office.

It does sound like a driver issue more than anything else. CPU overheat is the cause if you shutdown every minute or so.

A lock-up ingame is a telltale sign of a driver issue. In Mwpeck's post he had a link to Abit's site for that specific mobo you have. First item available was a soundcard driver. That is where I would get the drivers. Tough to trust a 3rd party since your soundcard is embedded in the mobo. Maybe grab every update for that mobo anyways. :)

It was also mentioned here as well but have you updated your Directx yet? If not you can get it at Microsoft.

One last note, I know you have mentioned defrag and all, but have you done a disc cleanup for temp internet files, yada yada?

Let us know how it goes. We're here to help.

I'm sure you would have mentioned it by now, but did you do any modding to your PC recently? Like overclocking or anything like that?

It hasn't come up yet and it doesn't sound like you did, but I thought I'd ask anyways.

In case you did, that might be the cause of your stress.

Let us know :-)

ummm, check your system resources while game is open, a buddy of mind was running over 90% utilization during GW, i directed him to some old mirrors for BlackViper, and by turning off some very unnecessary services as listed there, was able to run utilizing 76%... may want to try that route
