Finally PVP is on the Horizon

I know, I know. PVP should not be talked about just like religion and politics. It's just that I can't help myself!

RE: Finally PVP is on the Horizon

I worked at this years PAX ( last year's as well ), and I got a chance to hang out at the Turbine booth for a while. Meeting Samera and crew was super-cool - AND I got to sample some of the new content first-hand.

Okay, I'm not an advocate of PvP in any way shape or form - but it was pretty F-ing cool. The Tavern Brawl was what I played most, and with a LEVL 12 Wizard no less. Yep that's right - I have cast Chain Lighting, and let me tell you how much it rules! :) I was in the Phonix Tavern, and the bottom level was all Brawl. Go down the ramp & your fiar game - go back up and your safe. It's an utter free-for-all.

Capture the Flag was also on hand to be samples, and Samera made sure I got a chance to try it. It was fun - but by no means outstanding. If they make some more complex maps and raise the player limit higher than 2v2, it'd get more interesting.

I also got to see next month's content Stormreach Under Seige! Expect utter craziness as the Water Works gets the Xorian Cipher treatment! Tons of hard monsters ( flensers and beholders ) run amock in WW, and it's awesome! And yes, there were chaos bubbles. :) Can't wait!

Oh, and the level cap is going up with Mod 3 - and the devs expect it to hit in October.

Could you explain what this entailed in more detail? It sounds pretty intresting. And I normally hate pvp.

Tavern Brawl was pretty cool - and pretty easy to get into.

The bottom level of the Phonix Tavern was a Brawl area. Go down the ramp or drop down, and you get a pop-up saying "You Are Entering A Tavern Brawl Area". Go back to the top of the ramp and your safe. In the brawl it's a total free-for-all. You can attack anyone down there. I don't think it will impact your XP at all if you die - at least there was never any debt while I played. Several spells do not work in the Brawl area... Cloudkill most noticeably. I did not try PK, but I think it'd be off-limits as well.

Chain Lightning was AWESOME! Took out 4 others in one shot.

I'm still tired from working at PAX - only got 3 hours sleep from Thursady to Sunday - so if I did not explain this overly well, just ask for clarification. :)

So what happens when you die? Are you transported back to the non PvP area? And what did you mean by "I did not try to PK, but I think it'd be off-limits."?

And do you know if any skills don't work in the brawl area, or is it just spells?

And ever wonder why I'm so full of questions *grin*

RE: Finally PVP is on the Horizon

When you died in the Brawl area, you rezed at the top of the ramp - out of the PvP zone, but ready to hop right back in if you wanted. Also, I did not see any XP debt tagged to it - and it'd be rather dumb if Turbine gave you any. I know I'd stay out of it if I were to get debt in there.

I think PK is off limits because they said they were limiting spells in those zones with an InstaKill effect like Slay Living. So, I think PK would be out. I know when I tried to cast Could Kill - I got a pop-up saying that spell could not be cast in a Tavern Brawl zone... kind of like when you try to cast a spell in public.

I don't know about skills. I know that a Bard's Facinate worked, but never got a chance to play a Rogue, so I don't know about Sneak Attack ( tho I assume it works just fine ).

This kind of PvP actually sounds a little fun. It is like a tavern fight, that doesn't really penalize you. It really sounds intrsting. Though I think I want a list of what works and what doesn't before I would jump on down.

RE: Finally PVP is on the Horizon

Yay! Yet another game in a endless line of games with PvP. How original! How inovative! Way to offer something new and different to the market! Polish your e-peens boys and girls, it's newb-pwning time!

Just once, I'd like to see a company with the cajones to not cave to market pressure to add a feature that's barely used by most of the players, and generally considered to bring/create more problems than it alleviates.

Sure, it's nice to have an alternative type of gameplay (having a chance to do something other than questing), but I was really psyched about the possibility of a company pouring 100% effort and resources into a mind-blowing PvE experience.

The MMO market is ripe for a game without PvP, and the company that makes it will be a trend-setter of the highest order and reap profits no other company can touch right now simply becuase they will be offering something no other company is brave enough to offer.

Have fun, do it well, and share your knowledge.
