New Gamer...Needs Help

Hello, I am a new player to COH, I love this game. I have tried many characters but I have yet to find one that I really feel comfortable with. I want to find one that I can level up quick. I also want to find one that will be a great addition to a team. If anyone can help me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.[/I]

RE: New Gamer...Needs Help

Hi prophetiz! Welcome to GameAmp. If you have any question this the place to ask them. We love to answer them.
As for your question what character to play is a really hard one. It depends a lot whether you will team a lot or not. What your play style is, etc etc. I think the quickest character to level is a empathy defender. You will get invites to team above your level, and the only thing you have to do is keeping your team alive. Not really my kind of fun, but you could do it. As a solo player you are the best of with a scrapper. But basically all types are welcome in a team. That is the beauty of COH, it doesn't really matter what character you play, you can always make progress. It all comes down to what kind of character do you like to play best.

RE: New Gamer...Needs Help

welcome to gameamp prophetiz

i'll start by asking you the standard questions that everyone would ask

how long have you been playing CoH?

have you tried every archetype?

do you prefer to be up in the action or blasting from a distance?

do you prefer to do damage or support the team?

there are tons of things to consider when picking the type of toon you play.

they all kind of level at the same rate, but it all depends on your play style. if you like to solo a lot, it will definately take you longer.

anything i missed guys?

RE: New Gamer...Needs Help

Thanks for all the helpful information. I am so addicted to this game. I want to be a good player but there is so much to learn. I love to team play. I think I like to attack from a distance more than close-up. I also like to help heal other players. With this said, what power set would you suggest? Again, thanks for all of your help.

Defenders might be the way for you. Maybe a dark/elec defender? I am actually no defender expert. I don't heal. I make sure nobody needs healing :)

One thing you definately should do is joining our in-game global channel. In your chat window right click and select add channel[/c]. The channel name is [b]gameamp.com. After you added the channel, right click again in your chat window and select edit tab and add it. Now you can talk to all of us in-game as well.

And if you create a new toon, I suggest you create it on Triumph, because then you can join the Gameamp Alliance SG.

like phe said, it sounds like a defender might be the choice for you. the defenders main role is buff/debuff and secondary being ranged attacks.

the main "healer" primary is empathy, but most people expect empaths to be strictly that and have 1 or 2 attacks at most.

if you try defenders and find out you want to be a more offensive player, try blasters. i'm just starting into the world that is extreme damage of blasters. if you dont know which set to take, i suggest reading Firespray's Guide to Building a Flaming Hero: the Fire/Fire Blaster. its a nice little guide with some good points. and read the comments section too because Warron made some good points as well.

RE: New Gamer...Needs Help

My first lv 50 was an Empathy/Psionic Blast Defender. She was great and leveled extremely quick. Only about 215 hours of playtime for 1-50. I constantly got invited to teams 4 or 5 above my level. And as long as I was within 5 levels of the highest person on the team, I didn't have to get a Sidekick. Therefore I was getting EXP like I was killing things 5 or 6 levels above me...which means huge chunks of EXP. The reason Empaths can do this so often is because Empathy NEVER misses, it can't miss. The only way it wont affect its target is if the target is using a power which makes them intagible such as Phase Shift or Hybernate. That makes it a GREAT addition to teams.

They also have a few buffs such as Fortitude and Clear Mind, which offer great support to teammates. Fortitude will raise the target's Accuracy Damage and Defense, which makes it a great all-around buff. With a couple recharge Single Origin Enhancements in it, it's easy to get 4 people at once with Fortitude on them. Clear Mind will free them from things such as Disorient and Holds. It will also prevent them from being affected by such attacks for the length of its duration. If for some reason a teammate dies, such as they were damaged so quickly that you didn't have time to react and heal them, you can use Clear Mind to get them back in action very quickly. Give them an Awaken, use Clear Mind, and Heal up their HP. Give them a little time to recover Endurance and they're back fighting.

There's also a couple very good PBAoE Buffs (Point-Blank Area of Effect) called Regeneration Aura and Recovery Aura, commonly refered to as "The RA's." When activated, these will cause your character to emenate an aura from themselves instantly to raise everyone's Endurance Recovery and Health Regeneration significantly for a certain amount of time. Your team will LOVE you for this. The Recovery Aura is more than enough to get a teammate's Endurance from 0 to 100 and keep it there even while they use their powers.

RE: New Gamer...Needs Help

You sound like you play the same way I enjoy playing. I've hardly played every combination out there, but I've tried quite a few and the two that I enjoy the most so far are Illusion/Empathy controller and Dark/Electric Defender.

Illusion/Empathy is a good all round combination IMO. It was kinda slow starting out and couldn't solo all that well, but everyone loves a healer. Once I got Phantom Army things started to improve on the solo end, and at 32 getting Phantasm, well, there isn't much I can't solo any more. In addition, bring all the same stuff to a group along with deceive and the group will love you too. After all, who can argue with 4 extra party members when you've already got a full party of 8.

I started my Dark/Elec defender for a soloist SG. He's only lvl 12 atm but I can see a lot of potential. You've got your defense debuffs in both the dark and electric powersets. You've got a heal that is always local to you but is AoE so you can heal others simultaneously. The electric blast attacks are good for draining the enemies end as well as assiting to recharge your own. In my experience in levels 1-12 soloing is slow, but you'll always feel helpful in a group.

Kinetics/Electric Defender.

Your heal, Transfusion, is pretty darned cool. It IS target based, so when you use it, only your teammates that are close to the target you select will be affected by the heal. But the heal is a pretty powerful one.

Also, your powers are all buff based, for the most part. Speed Boost, Inertial Reduction, etc. So once the fight starts, you just keep those buffs up, keep the heals going and blast away when you feel the urge to hit something.

The reason I say electric is that Transfusion drains endurance from it's target, so if you slot your electric blasts to also drain endurance, you can make bosses and elite bosses (etc etc) all lose a great deal of endurance, thus helping your team to not get hit by their bigger attacks.

1st off Welcome to the site!

And we do have a very handy dandy guide about the basics of each of the archtypes in the game. And if one intrests you, click the name and it will take you to a guide about each of the different power sets that archtype has.
