| QUOTE | PvP Unlock Packs Now Available 31 August 2006 Guild Wars players now have the opportunity to purchase PVP Unlock Packs for all Prophecies skills! For $9.99 USD (8.99, £5.99), you can unlock all of the 70+ Prophecies skills for a single profession. For $39.99 USD (35.99, £23.99) you can unlock all 450+ Prophecies skills for the 6 professions. Once unlocked, skills can be used by any of your PvP characters. Head to the Guild Wars Official Store to take advantage of this much-requested opportunity . |
WOW... just wow, I think this is the smartest thing they have ever done, so many casual players that do not have the time to play a lot of hours a week and can't unlock a lot of skills and what happens is they're missing on a lot, but now all you have to do is spend just $9.99 and you can have all the skills for that certain profession.
I actually think that PVP may improve now, maybe we'll see less and less of those cookie cutter builds...like IWAY, and more people now may be hooked to PVP, I'm not buy that because I already have all skills unlocked, but If I didn't I would.
I remember how many times I missed GVG with my guild, because I didn't have the right skills nor had the gold or the factions to buy them, and I could careless if someone who started playing one month ago already had all the skills because they bought them, I mean good for them it was their money, also I think it's great because that way the more money ANET makes the merrier they are meaning that more updates, support and cool events that will have.
I just want to say YAY for ANET!!! ^^

Yeah, that makes me really mad, i spent so much time and so much hard work to get all the skills i've gotten and now you can just buy them all, this weekend is a huge market ploy, i mean double and maybe "easier" fame, and even if you couldnt do the build, you can buy the skills :< I can't wait to see the people who have never really done and serious pvp and come to HA with all the skills boughten and totaly ruin a good team =/

Well this helps a lot of people who can not grind the pvp sections for faction to unlock them but can also if you are on gw a lot but just dun feel like grinding. Just another way to make money. Most games that are no fees do this. I think it's a 50/50 good/bad thing.
But from what I just saw in the store it's the orginal GW. Just trying to make money from that. :/ Prolly every other one anet will do this to keep making money. Give people a chanse to catch up.

UH... no actually I'm not kidding.
Also I have seen that a lot of posts are just about, that you had to work for what you have and now people can just buy them just like that, at least maybe that way you'll appreciate your accomplishments more than those people that will just buy the skills, come on now, if someone buys the skill pack how is that going to affect your gameplay?! I know what you're going to say, oh but now they're going to try to PVP and they're going to ruin everything for a team... and blah blah blah... don't forget that everyone once was new to the game and had to start somewhere, so give other people a chance too, also more people doing PVP means more teams in HA, GVG and TA ^^
Anyways please don't make comments like that anymore... everyoene is entittled to their opinion, and just because mine does not agree with yours, doesn't mean that I'm kidding or that I don't know what I'm saying.
Thank you!

I understand Anet wants to make money, all businesses and companies obviously need profit, but I really don't see a difference between paying $10 for a load of skills and paying $10 for 100k Guild Wars gold on eBay.
Speaking of which, at this rate, Anet will be offering virtual gold for real money in no time.

This is causing some controversy, this is the second thread I've seen on the subject.
My personal view:
I understand how annoyed some of you hard core PvP players will be that have worked hard to gain faction to unlock skills but remember this: while you worked hard to unlock them you unlocked them with a purpose and a solid idea what you were going to use them for, that gives you the upper hand against anyone who buys the whole lot and is faced with a massive skill choice and little understanding of how to use them effectively. Just think about how easy it is going to be facing these people, there are going to be some off-the-wall random skill setups when newbies buy them, mostly they are going to have a really steep learning curve and honestly don't really stand a chance against an experienced player who has the knowledge and experience behind them. On the other hand this may also produce some more interesting builds being developed when PvP only players get the chance to have all skills available to them, but only those with the experience are likely to accomplish that, unless the newbie is very lucky in his/her random selection.
It is all still about the skill of the player in my opinion and for that reason I don't see any unbalancing or have any problems with it and if it gives Anet the money to keep GW free and develop better enhancements then I can only support it.
Take solice in your experience and knowledge. Personally I'm no big PvP player but I know I get alot more satisfaction using a weapon I've customised myself to suit my needs based on my own skill set up than I would from using any so called 'godly' green item, it's the same kind of thing, pride in your accomplishments.

Right on, exaclty what im thinking. If you can pay real money for virtual skills then why would buying money/weapons/material illegal? Skills is a result of your hard work, accomplishing quest just like money weapons and mats where you farm very hard to get those things. You can't say yes to one thing becuz you need money to keep on with your businness and no to others becuz it wouldn't be fair to others...

Exactly. Soon you will be able to buy favor for 39.99/hour. It justifies all the other sales of in game 'stuff'.

To my understanding one of the purposes of the game was to provide a skill based experience. Not one driven on endless hours of searching for the right skills/armour.
This update seems to go along with that purpose and as such I like it. I personally don't plan on making such a purchase but I certainly don't think it was the wrong thing to do.
As for the comment on making online gold officially a purchasable product in real life...given how much of that stuff that goes on around Ebay...I'm sort of surprised they haven't already. Gold doesn't offer much in the game except for better looking armor and maybe a slightly better weapon mod than can be obtained through collectors. That's another issue entirely though.

I like the idea cause the only reason i didnt get a second account is cause i didnt want to work for so long to unlock everything, but it is pretty expensive.

They don't have enough in game content to have this game made a pay to play.

Hasn't anyone thought about those poor folks just coming into the game for Nightfall? I think it's nice that they can play catch-up skillwise and be competitive in PvP without going back through the previous chapters until they feel like it. Plus, how about those neglected second accounts folks have and can't merge? They could unlock thier skills over there, and use it for PvP exclusively. Of course, anything like that comes at a cost, which does supplement Anet's income, which, in turn, supports the furthur development of the game.
It's a bit late, and my calculus work has been a bit draining, so I hope some of that made sense...

As Geek said, people who buy skills won't know how to use them, which means that those of us who are more experienced will be able to easily defeat them in PvP until they create a working skillset, which they would otherwise simply have farmed for in PvE (which wouldn't teach them how to PvP anyway) and just allows those people to start PvPing earlier in their game career.
I myself spent a great deal of time farming so that I could unlock all of the Prophecies skills and a great deal of time fighting in the arenas so I could unlock all the Prophecies items. I don't care about this update, though, because it doesn't help those people at all. In fact, I am a bit leery about people buying the skills, but that's more because I'm worried that they'll be too easy of prey for other people; just as in Factions PvE people don't know how to use their builds, people won't know how to use their builds in PvP if they buy it. HOWEVER, they will learn or they will stop playing. Simple as that.
All in all, if ArenaNet makes something like this that allows them to make more money and create better games in the future, more power to them. It simply means that we're less likely to get something with as bad of a storyline as there was in Factions if ANet can hire an actual writer for the scripts (assuming they decide to take that expense) or we'll have better scenery for future chapters than anything we've seen before.

Or they're trying to keep the game from being pay to play. And keep the interest of just casual players who don't have the time, to not get discouraged by not having unlocked good skills to combat against others.
Or are you guys that have unlocked everything afraid of having more competetion?
