Norton and GW

Does anyone else have the problem as to getting into GW after you get a new update from ANet? I have this problem on both of my computers that I have. Just wanting to know if it is just me or if anyone else has experienced this.

To go into detail as to what it does is that when you go to run GW it will load up GW and get the first part of the update; but once the second part of the update is about to come up it just sits there and does nothing. It is just sitting there waiting to connect to the servers but Norton will not let it unless you restart. But after you do that it is fine untill the next update comes along.

RE: Norton and GW

Sadly, I do have Norton. IMO it's horrible but there's nothing I can do about it. :(

But no, I do not have those issues you have. Sorry. :P

RE: Norton and GW

hey i know what ur saying, I was happy when my Norton subcription ran out. I have since then used Bit defender. Its been great, use very little resources, and you wont even notice it. But you do have to have a fast machine.

Link

You can try it out for 30 days before you buy !!

Im happy with it.

one my desktop it is a AMD 64 3200+ 1 Gb ddr400 and my laptop is an AMD 64 ml-34 I belive with 1 Gb ddr400 also I think. I do not have my laptop on atm so kind of hard to remember what the specs are right off the top of my head. They are both more than enough to run Norton.

I use pc cillin I used to us mcafee but it stinks so I switch to pc cillin it is a good stable anti virus with all the whistle you'll need to protect your computer plus it doesn't have any problem connecting to any online games server.

RE: Norton and GW

Back to the original problem - On my family computer GW is set to have any access to the internet it wants in my firewall options, yet whenever there is an update to GW the firewall kicks in and blocks it. This means I have to set it to allow GW access to the net everytime there is an update. I don't understand why it does this, it must change the gw.exe file significantly enough for it to be picked up as a new program or whatever.

Oh, and we used to use norton, then moved to macaffee, both of which you have to pay for. After bad experience with both of them we use AVG which is free and better.

RE: Norton and GW

I use Norton and when it updates, the same thing happened, but when the second part of the update starts, a security window pops up and ask me if I want to accept internet access to GW.exe. Just do always accept and the second part should start.

What you should do is to configure your norton's firewall, in your firewall's configuration, in program tab, add gw.exe and autorize everything from it. I hope it works for you :)

RE: Norton and GW

Ok I just did permit all on the set up I hope that will fix it. I will keep you posted if it does. I did have the client set for permit all also. But I hope that it is the setup part that is the problem.

good answer, and welcome to the community... mine used to pop up after an update and re-ask if it was ok to allow access, even if i put, 'allow always' whenever there was an update it asked me again... it must change what norton recognizes as the program when an update occurs. I have NOT noticed that recently tho, and havent done anything different to my NIS

RE: Norton and GW

This is a very common problem with norton and one of the reasons i stopped using it. For the pay version of the Internet Security suite it does some virus prevention by checking the integrity of a program just in case a trojan was slipped in. IMO it is a flawed program that doesnt like to listen to what you say and uses too much system resources.

Anyway for the most part the best defence when it comes to firewalls is a hardware one.(usually one is included with your router) so keep your router up-to-date. A software firewall tends to be much easier to crack but they do still offer some protection, especially since updates come out for them more often then for hardware ones.

RE: Norton and GW

I think that the poblem is in the Guilds Wars Setup. I just got the update here on my laptop and it did the same this as before. So I went back into Norton and made Guild Wars Setup Permit all again (might got to default after restart not sure though). But that is all that I have came up with at this point in time.

RE: Norton and GW

hmm... this is annoying... I'm sorry, I really don't know, I'm not sure, but before, everytime there was an update, norton's firewall is creating a new rule with gw.exe, maybe you could delete every rules about gw (if there is more than one) then add gw.exe again. Like I said before, I had that problem before, but don't really remember exactly what I did, sorry :(

RE: Norton and GW

I had a problem like that once with norton... somehow it was on nortons list on block(that was my fault) but you should look into that. Or you can just shut norton off ;)

RE: Norton and GW

I've never really had a problem with Norton and GW but I got rid of it 'cause it used to shut off GW -- or any other game, for that matter -- and tell me some random crap, then restart my computer.

I dunno what would fix your problem, but I'd just get rid of Norton. All it really does is annoy the crap outta me...and everyone else, I see.

Every time there is an update the exe changes, and thats enough for most security software to think its a new program.

I personally would make it so if a program is called gw.exe then it gives it access, though this would easily let viruses by that had the same name so it wouldnt be very secure, this is why I dont run anti-virus software unless I know a site i'm going to could possibly give me a virus. Even then I usually dont because I constantly make a restore point(once a day) and if I know I'm going to be at risk, i'll make another one before I take the risk. That way if I do get a virus, getting rid of it is a few clicks away.

Honestly, System Restore is the only thing Microsoft did right. I've had a system up for over a year that had gotten many viruses through its year long journey, and all of them were effectivly removed via system restore. Though in the end it finally got one that somehow disabled system restore so reinstalling was inevitable.

RE: Norton and GW

I know it's not really helpful as such... but I have no more protection other than my Router's Firewall, Window's Built in Firewall and I use Opera's Internet Browser.

This is my gaming PC, I backup regularly - more to do with not wanting to download gigs of files if anything terminal happened - but, I've only had one virus recently, and that was due to opening a specific port or protocol on my Router so I could host a TS server while my Clan was between providers. My Router even warned me that doing it and leaving it open could leave me open to attacks.

In my experience, anti-virus software causes more problems than it prevents... I used Norton, and my computer went from a high-powered Game PC into a stuttering wreck, everything was blocked, startup was slow, shutdown was slow, game updates sent it into a panic :/... I decided to take my chances, and other than that single occurence, my computer has been virus/trojan free. I can do without the resource hogging apps.

Most things I've ever been infected with in the past are usually easily remedied with a good old system re-install, which also does wonders for performance, as an old system usually gets clogged up with lots of unecessary files and processes. And having all those back-ups means I can return my PC to it's current state within the matter of an hour or two.

--

Saying that, I have a second computer that is used for Office work, and storing my photos and music. It has McAfee running on it - but that's only because I don't need performance from it.

--

What I'm saying is if you backup files you don't want to lose often, and prefer performance over safety, then prevention isn't necessarily better than the cure.

RE: Norton and GW

Just a question, when it updates, did you configure your norton so that when there is something happening it pops up a window which lets you chose what to do with it? Because maybe when you only add gw.exe to the list of rules, it may not let the new build to update properly...
