| For those who build their own systems and do their own upgrades |

Ok, so while I'm looking for upgrades for my motherboard and cpu I decided that what I have to have has to last for at least four years technology-wise. So far these are the front runners:
Asus A8V Deluxe VIA Socket 939 ATX Motherboard / AGP 4X/8X / Audio / Gigabit LAN / Serial ATA / RAID / USB 2.0 / Firewire
AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 / 1MB / 2000Mhz FSB / Socket 939 / Processor
Anyone have any pros or cons.......or better suggestions?
I'll be running Win XP Pro and have a 600W power supply. Most of the components in the system now will stay, but most if not all have been upgraded in the last year. I will have to change RAM cause the current board uses SDRAM.

Well the processor is WAY WAY expensive. I bought a 3.2 pentium 4 for $186 usd. I myself dont see a 700$ differance for the 64amd. The motherboard is really nice tho, same exact one i use. Its very friendly for upgrades. Hehe just my 2cp on the issue :)

I think the P4 is a pretty dated platform, and would be more likely to avoid building out a new system w/ it.
Your money would be better spent looking into something that will work with the AMD Athlon64 or Opteron series of chips. They're typically cheaper than Intel for similar performance, and their socket sets are generally stable.
Intel costs too much for too little, IMHO.
And you're looking down the barrel of a 50 cal...

Since my first version of this system - way back in 1995 - I started with a AMD P90 class CPU on an XT style board. I actually still have most of the parts to the system with a P133 class CPU on the same motherboard in my son's current machine (which he can't use cause the I/O card and Serial port went bad). So I have a long standing and happy relationship with AMD products :). My daughter's over-clocked 586 system is also an AMD CPU and Motherboard which I had upgraded to from my father's 386 machine I bought him my second year in college.
uhm.....ok I'm a geek......and I am proud of it LOL
Anyway, what I'm saying is I am planning on bying an AMD I just haven't decided if I want to go with that CPU or one of the higher speed yet older 64 bit CPUs.

I built my own computer, and I'm running a Soket A K7S5A Mainboard (fairly cheap) and an AMD Duron 1.3Ghz, and i'm still able to play newer games like Halflife 2 without lag.
Personally I think $700 for a 2.6Ghz processor is a bit over the top, ok alot. I could probably make an entire computer like mine for less then that, - the monitor (cause I got a nice monitor). You could easily get another type of Athlon like a regular Athlon 2.6 (I THINK they come in 2.6's) for alot less. Or even one a bit slower then that would be fine. As long as you have sufficient memory and a decnt video card your computer would be fine with a slower processor. The board looks pretty good though, pretty average price.
Personally I would suggest these 2, way cheaper too, not top of the line super technology but they'll serve your purpose, performance would be fine for today's games and later games.
Asus A7V8X-X VIA Socket A ATX Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP2700+
Like I said not top of the line but a Socket A mainboard is pretty easy to find processors for, especially AMD, and even though a 2.16Ghz processor isn't the fastest out there, it's still not slow.
Hope it helps, sure there's efficiency but think of your wallet too :)

the 2nd one... besides... Pentium sucks... always, always go for Athlon =P
My next upgrade (assuming I ever get out of debt): Athlon FX (dont remember #)... at least a 3.3 Ghz Processor, and Geforce 6800.
heh, in my dreams... lol
