City of Heroes Abbreviations

Forgive if this post existed long ago and I am reviving it. I didn't know if we could have a thread that explained some of the abbreviations I see in the posts. Didn't know if other new members could also benefit from it. :)

I know:

CoH - City of Heroes
SG - Super group

But there are others I see I don't know yet. Like CoT, etc. Any input would be great!

one that you'll hear if you team with controllers...

PA... pahantom army
RA... recovery aura (think this one was covered)
fort... fortitude
invis... invisible (clearly)
HA.. healing aura (not as common... usually they throw RA and HA at the same time

pets.... any phantom, jack frost, imp, or animated stone
TF... task force
SS... super speed
SJ super jump
fast tracking.... that's where in TF's you have someone with ss and invis go through the mission and find the glowies so that you can move on... will be suggested in long missions early in the am. :)

I can't think of anymore at the moment... I'll see what I can find. :)

Re: City of Heroes Abbreviations

And then if you regularly group with the same people, maybe members of the same SG (supergroup), they may refer to each other by initials. Most superheroes have multi-word names. If you read our SG threads, you might see us talk about HH (Healing Hands) or NC (Night Claw). Also SGs have initials. The one made of people from this website is called HoGA (Heroes of GameAmp).

A couple more:
  • CoV - City of Villians
  • baddie - villian of any level
  • MMORPG - Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game
  • CK - Clockwork King (frequently used on MMORadio)

As mentioned before, a lot of powers are abbreviated. Power types are also abbreviated. My fire/fire blaster might be introducted as an f/f blaster. A/R is automatic rifle. Dev is devices. Rad is radiation. Etc.

Some other unfamiliar words might be blapper and crapper. A blaster or controller who acts like a scrapper. If you aren't sure of some kind of jargon that we're using, add a post asking us. We're nice people and won't talk about you behind your back...much ;)

Re: City of Heroes Abbreviations

you know the bio things took me till I hit about 32 to figure out.. people kept saying 'Bio break' and I honestly figured they were editing their bio's... cause I'm dumb. :)

most people in game are really nice too... someone said something the other day I'd never heard and I dumbly asked what it was... he told me... no jokes made... mospt people are really nice.

Anyway when I was gaming I thought of a few more....

Nems... nemisis
DE... devouring earth
oh..... and "Gather"...seems obvious... but most people will just say this when they cast RA, invis and HA... you might adk the first time they say gather what they're casting... cause some scrappers ahve gotten VERY mad at me for casting invis on them.... so...

I'm sure I'll come up with more... and while I'm thinking of it the names... you'll probalby only ever be called your full name by NPC's... I'm usually Sapph, or gypsy... or even SG... so... it irked me at first but now not so much... cause it's hard to type Sapphire Gypsy if you can't type a mile a min. like I do :)

Anyone else thought of any great abbreviations that we use in the game? I have found myself coming to this thread a few times now to understand what people are talking about! :) Thanks to everyone who has added to it. It has made this newbie's exp. of the game a lot better. :)

Re: City of Heroes Abbreviations

lieu or lew - lieutenant bad guy

mob - one of the bad guys or a group of bad guys

tp - teleport (not toilet paper *grin*)

lol or laf - laugh (of course i haven't seen anyone else use laf other than me, but i use it a lot)

bubs, blocks, bubbles - the xp bar on the upper right hand screen that has how far you have progressed and is divided up in blocks or bubs, or bubbles, usually used like, "how many bubs do you have to level"

um..... i'm sure i'll think of more....

Re: City of Heroes Abbreviations

zoning - changing city zones by tram, highway tunnel, or mission door

I overheard my husband using this word to talk about losing a power when he switched zones. I've also heard it used when talking about people who have a lot of lag, which becomes more obvious to team members while switching zones.

GM... game god... stuck in a wall petition a gm. :)

The kk always cracks me up... I usually just use k or acutally type ok.... do you reammy need 2 k's???

this one will come in hand when dealing with Paragon protectors... MOG... Moment of Glory... mog is BAD... you try to kill all pp's before they cast mog... most newbies don't know that one about pp's... so it'll help you out later.

cm - clear mind.
zzz - stunned, held... PLEASE use clear mind ;) a scrapper friend of mine's bc (battle cry) is "stunned again"

toon/char - player character
g2g - I use it for good to go... some use it for got to go...
buff - increases the abilities of a pc
debuff - decreases the abilities of a mob
root - controllers job, ;) locking down mobs
ks - kill steal... sure you've heard that one
cc - rooting... corwd control... controllers speciality
rez - rezurrect
"Buff up" - my blaster bf is known for saying this one before a fight... meaning cast whatever buffs you have, and let's rock... :)

and my personal favorite...

wwwwwwwwwwwwwdaaaaaaaaadddddddddddssssssssswwwwwwww.... trying to run in chat mode :)

Re: City of Heroes Abbreviations

What do most people call those instanced outdoor missions that you get into by taking the train? The only thing I've heard them called in-game are "train missions". Is this the common term? And the abbrev would be TM then? So I could broadcast: "30scrapper need help with TM" and peeps would know what I was talking about? or is the abbrev "train mission?" and I would have to say "30 scrapper need help with train mission?"

Hi Anax, welcome to GameAmp. The place with all the answers.

IP = Independance Port.
PI = Peregrine Island. The zone where the highest level players hang out. And where the term bridging is used a lot.

bridge/bridging is a term used for a player that is 2 - 8 levels lower then a power level/herding guru. The bridge will sidekick a low level player. By SK-ing to the bridge he gets more xp then being SK-ed to the main herder. And if you have 3 bridges, you can power level 3 players at the time.

I have also referred to this practice as "ghosting". Useful not only for glowie hunts, but for finding the boss and tp'ing the rest of the group to the end.

Also, as CoH is my first MMORPG, there are a few general acronyms I learned such as...

"afk".........Away From Keyboard
"bio".........Going to the bathroom, be right back
"brb".........Be right back
"mt"..........mis-tell, for when you send a tell to the wrong person, or use the wrong channel

Re: City of Heroes Abbreviations

These are a few that took me a looooooong time to figure out, now I use them all the time.

pst - please send tell, used when forming teams generally

omw - on my way....i actually thought they were saying "oh my word" so it didn't really make sense to me

squid/sushi/octo - all used to refer to Luska, the octopus in Independance Port

squishy - this one i'm still not entirely sure on, i believe it is referring to peacebringers (PBs) or warshades in squid form, or just any toon who is very susceptible to damage such as controllers and blasters

I've also heard people looking for help with "raids" and I can only assume this is referring to a Hami Raid...

I was in a group once where the leader kept referring to the Controller as a CONK I assume that is a controller that acts as at tank. This one was using his pets to hold Aggro. Did anyone define Aggro yet?
