| Sup with older people and MMO's? |
|
|

Okay, I have asked older people questions like, "Do you have an Xbox?" and they will replay, "Uhhh, my son has a game cube."
But really now, why is it older people just "have" to play MMO's more than regualar console games. My theory is, they don't have the time (But yeah, you can get to lvl 50 within a month...) or they just dont know how to use a controller (Blast these dandible wires!). Help me out here, im really confused...

I guess it all depends on your idea of what "older" is. I'm 33, old enough where I could possibly have a child in his/her teens (although I have no children). Maybe the draw to MMOs/PC games is that most of us old folks use our computers for other things, like paying bills and working and stuff, so the computer is already there. We don't have the time, desire or expendable income to go out and buy the latest and greatest console games. At least, that's how it works with me. I have no problem with the controllers, quite honestly, in my day I could whoop just about anyone's tail in the various early Mortal Kombat games, both arcade and console based.

I have to agree. I'm 36 (married...no kids) and I really don't feel like putting out the cash for and XBox. I grew up with the Atari 1200, Pong, Intellivision and a slew of others. My computer works just fine.

Bingo!
I'm 35 years old, wife, 2 kids, and everything else that goes with it. I have neither the time nor the inclination to try and keep up with the every evolving console arms race. Been there, beat that. I'm Final Fanatasy'd out.
But I know what you're going to say:
| QUOTE | | Dude, you have to upgrade your computers to keep up with these games too. What's the difference? |
The answer is quiet simple: PC's, notebooks, and highspeed connections can be deducted as business expences on your taxes, unless you work in the gaming business, a console system can't.
Which is not to say I won't be buying a console in the next few years. My oldest just turned 5 this spring, and to this point he's been content with those $20 game-in-the-joystick, plug-and-play games. It's only a matter of time till those will no longer be enough.

I'm not sure if 28 puts me in the "older people" category, but I don't play console games. I stopped playing them back in the day when I couldn't finish Super Mario Bros (yes the first one!). I find the controler very difficult to use, and the mouse and keyboard are a lot simpler.

most girls arent comfortable with controllers.
most girls dont play enough with one to get comfortable.
most boys have no problem with it because of all the practice.
if they made different types of console games that would
keep girls attention better then they would be comfortable with the controllers as well.
a keyboard and mouse were awkward to use at first too, but since most everyone has to use them everyday in one task or another, hardly anyone minds them.

I'm kinda a partial to both sides; consoles and PC's.
I'm 30, married and i have two kids. We have every generation of Nintendo console that has been made and we still play them also!( My six-year-old more than i do)
I also have an Xbox, but i find that even though the games on the Xbox are easy to get into and the content and game play is fun I like PC games because they tend to be more expansive in scope and feel. When i started playing CoH I had just recently bought Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind for the Xbox and was tearing through it at apretty good clip until i started playing CoH and I haven't touched my Xbox since.
I'll prolly start playing it again when Justice League Heroes and Superman Returns is released, but until then i'll be in Paragon City!

Well from my standpoint, I guess the reason I don't play the console systems much anymore is simple; I just don't have that much free time in my day anymore. Between my Wife and I we have a ps2 an x-box and a gamecube and they all just sit there gathering dust nowadays. I also feel that MMO's give you more bang for your buck as well, I mean I've been playing CoH for a little over nine months now and I'm still loving it, show me a console game that has that high of a replay value. Plus for me personally I have not seen any console games come down the pike recently that have set my soul on fire, so I'll stick to the PC. At this time in my life it's one or the other, and right now the PC offers more of what I'm after.

I played the games for a few years, just never felt comfortable w/ them. The first time I was on a computer, I felt right at home... of course I had taken typing classes, and had been using a typewriter and wordprocessor before I ever got near a computer, but the mouse is a lot easier to use than a control paddle.

WHAT THE HELL KIND OF A CHAIN IS THIS!!! well back in my day i did'nt stand for kids sassin' me and i won't put up with it now!!! you kids sound bitter in some way, did one of us "older people" school you in BB or another PvP zone, perhaps?? J/K i am 31 and have a 5yrs son. i think it's great for "older people" that play. the 1st team i ever joined had a father and son on it. keep in mind(younger players) your parents are the ones that pay for your service, also you may want to keep in mind that if your too young to vote us "older people" are the ones that can help with all the censorship issues that are currently going on when some crackpot politician feels the only stand they can take to save their tails and get re-elected is to complain about the "violence" in video games. so in closing be nice to the older players online they can become your greastest ally whether it's on a team,SG or with Capitol Hill.

I still play my console games but I only have a few of them. I am 26 so that doesnt really put me in the older group. For me there hasn't really been any console games that have come out that I have felt like buying/renting. I dont even play that much on CoX anymore even (started when I4 had just come out). Anymore I spend most of my day reading, playing CoH, and playing PS2.

Some simple thinigs I dont like about consoles: (im like 39 thats nearly half way to dead!)
Poor Graphics (even at their very best levels that most games do not take advantage of they are poor by PC standards. Why settle for TV grade graphics?
Cant upgrade them!
No other use than gaming.(dont even say playing cds or dvds as 15$ buys a cd player, 30$ covers a DvD player)
Cost is unreasonable for a very limited system. Newest XBox was about the same price as a decent base level computer.
I hate game pads!
Most console games are very very scripted.
and Lastly MMRPGs are mostly made by adults for adults, a child cant even get access to one without an adult. They have adult content, adult themes, and there are almost none that have "child" characters.
Did you notice that CoH and CoV have adult male, female, huge, and squid? for characters - no child characters at all? Same with most others. In fact I think Archanos and Statesman are most likely 30+.
If you want to play an adult you should expect to encounter a few.

37 and have an XBox. Play PC games mostly though because the content is usually magnitudes better than the console games.
But anothehr reason would be that most adults have jobs. Some of those jobs require the use of a computer. Some even require a laptop which they can take with them when they need to travel to client sites. Put this all together and you have a perfect environment in which you can be away from home, stay up 'til 3 AM playing a game you love, not incur additional charges for playing the game (like you do in a hotel room when playing their console) but most importantly - not get wife aggro while doing it. :)

I'm 37 and have an xbox (though currently broken) and an GBA. Played on systems since i was a kid with Pong and Atari 2600. I mainly play PC games, CoH or Civilization IV for a couple of reasons.
1) As others have said content
2) Is that it has it's own monitor. Our computer is in the same room as our TV. While my wife watchs TV I play computer games, or the other way around. We like it this way since we get to spend time together but still do our own thing. If I was playing Xbox I would either be on the TV and she couldn't watch TV, or I would have to go to the bedroom to play. I usually listen to the TV while I am playing the games so we can still talk about what is happening on the shows.

So I think the answer to this question is
Before you start making judgements about people you should ask them if there over 50 and under 70 to be classified as old.
Also what's your classification of old?

Well, I'm 23 and that still keeps me in the young group...at least for another few years. I still play both. I still play my PS2 a lot. I play mostly sports games on it. Madden football, MLB 2K- series, ESPN NHL Hockey...EA Games, mostly. I use my PC for RTS & MMOGs mostly. Command & Conquer, Planetside, Star Wars: Empire at War...and of course City of Heroes & City of Villains. My first few years of college before I got a PC powerful enough to handle good games (besides Counterstrike and some C&C games), I played my N64 (yeah, freshman year I had it in my dorm) & my PS2 when I got it the next year. Again, most of us were playing sports games on the consoles, so it really depended on what your preference for type of game was/is.
Also, I think your "clique" determines what you play too. The "jocks" mostly played Madden & the sports games on PS2/X-Box while the other "nerds," "smart kids," "loners," whatever you wanna call the non-jock types, branched out into the PC games. I'm not calling anyone a nerd for merely playing a PC game, I'm just echoing the stereotypes that happen to ring true for the most part. Although, I was the jock type in high school and college (HS=4 years of football and track & field, College= 4 years of track & field, 1 year of football) and I'm a big PC gamer as well as console.
Like I said, I think it all depends on your preferences as to controllers, types of games, and time/money you can sink into games.

well, i wouldnt be classed as old (21 in 3 weeks!) but I dont play consoles at all often as of the last 3 years.
The main reason for this is that I dont own a TV as here in britishland you require a TV LICENCE to own a tv, even if u only use it for playing games.
Now for me its a choice, one MMO or a £130/year TV licence. Personally it works out cheaper to play MMOs on my pc which i need for University than it does to buy a console&tv&licence.
Am I old? no. Do i play consoles? No.
Its not just exclusively the post-quarter century crowd that favour MMOs to Consoles, us poor student types do too!
Oh, Hello Mr. Jurassik! Sorry about that arrow, it wasnt aimed at you. I'll just be on my way now... *flees*

I'm 35, married with 2 children. For me it doesn't matter if it's PC or console. I've played every type of console and lots of different PC games. I had an Atari as a kid and I bought my first computer in 1996. It doesn't matter if it's 3rd person, 1st person, side scroller, or whatever style. Pong, Defender, Starfox, Mario Bros, Quake, Diablo, Red Alert, etc etc...What matters is the player and what he likes. Young or old...gamers are gamers...some just have more experience. Personlly I'm a big comic book collector and COH is the my dream game made reality. Game On!!

DANG!!! I'm 29 & was hoping I was in that group yet too. oh well proud to be apart of something. LOL.
I use to play only console games. never could get into the pc/RPG games. until COH. been playing it for about a year now, I haven't touched any of my console games since then. it just seems that after playing a console game for about a month if that you know all there is to it. In COH I'm always learning something new. Love every minute of it.
Its time consuming & fun to interact w/ others on the game.
I will be getting PS3 when it comes out (just cause I have so many consoles unit, all but the sega). I'm more of a collector of the console unit now more than anything.

I am 39 as well, and I consider myself immortal, i'll be sure and bring flowers...
I now play this MMO because I got real tired of all the malarky in FPS games, I can still school people (adults and upstart kids) in Counter-Strike, Quake1 2 3, UT2003-4 and so on but those games can be learned by rote, you can easily memorize sniper spots, map layouts and such, then the game basically comes down to who has the fastest connection, but the cheats and scripts designed to give a player an unfair advantage became to much... first the insults then the excuses (its just a game) and (well then why don't you get it and $!&@?) I don't get that in CoH, even the children act more like adults and that is very refreshing.
I've played with almost every system released in the United States (accept Xbox360) or (PS3)and I am constantly disappointed... very seldom is a system backwards compatable, and if it is it only applies to the game, the memory card is system specific.
To start I own a PS1 still (sometime play it as well)I havn't purchased any new systems and why should I? I can get better parts and upgrade my computer and of course my computer is backwards compatable with every computer game I have ever owned, and with a few small programs I can even play old DOS and text based games (with emulators I can play all the older consol and Arcade games as well) not to mention I can save my games to almost any media type, print screenshots from my printer and can connect Joysticks and Gamepads and on and on...
Of course new technology comes out all the time, and of course companies need to keep up with it or become obsolete (eg Sega Saturn) but if you like consol games then by all means get and play them, I for one prefer my computer, and thanks to CoH/CoV prefer to play MMOs.

i'm 23 and 3/4 and i feel like i'm in the old group. my body hurts like an old man from 10 years of football and i work so much and go out so little that i am happy to come home, play with my dog for half an hour then eat, do grad school work then hero it up. my little brother just turned 21 last weekend and i had to suck it up and babysit the tike and make sure he didnt die. i dont think you can put an age on whats considered old and young, it just depends on the person. i usually go by my age +25 years, cause i cant say i wouldnt get down and dirty with terri hatcher and she's 40 :)
but back on subject, i had an Xbox but it broke last fall before i entered paragon. my brother waiting outside target for 12 hours to get xbox360 and dropped 600 on the console and games. there is no way i'd spend $500 on a console system right now. but i am going to buy a laptop for like 1k tomorrow. i'd probably buy a console if i wasnt playing CoX.

I'm only 23 but I have always played PC games, in part because my parents refused to buy a console or any games at all. The main reason though, is that when I was 8 I discovered Gemstone 3, the text based MMO thats still running today. I played that off and on for 15 years until I discovered CoH.
I only played a few PC games to fill in the gaps in my internet connection. When I first started I was playing on a black & yellow dinosaur that could barely connect to the net.
But now I am free and only playing CoH. I probably won't ever get a console, I love downloading mods way to much to try a game that doesn't have them (and I have heard that they started making modding tools for console games , but I don't really think that they match up to PC quality.)

I can't believe how many people are blaming the controls for the large number of older players in MMO's. That's not really the reason for most of us, though it must certainly be a factor for some.
I've asked several people I know who are over 30 and only play MMO's and they all say the same thing. They are just not interested in most other kinds of games anymore.
Most console games are designed and marketed with teenagers in mind. They appeal greatly to teenagers, but as players get older, these kinds of games lose their appeal, especially after older players have tried MMO's.
MMO's are designed and marketed with an adult audience in mind, as already mentioned earlier in this thread. They also have the advantages of greater complexity and a large internet community. Once you've become addicted to team play with thousands of possible teammates to choose from, playing a single player game seems much less appealing. When you are used to a game that gains content over time, you lose interest in games that stay exactly the same no matter how many times you play them. Console games lack large raids with multiple teams, costume contests, super groups, maxed-out characters who will come and help you, global chat and many other things that appeal to many gamers.
The reason these factors affect mainly older players is simple. Interest in these factors grows over time. By the time they have taken over your gaming habits, you are older.
When you younger players learn to finish all your console games in under an hour by using the shortcuts, you too will set down your controller and just play your MMO's.

I'm sunshine and im 16 years old.
I grew up all my life, waiting in line to buy the next great mario game (they peaked at super mario 64), and even bought the GC the very day it came out, like five years ago or something.
For the past two years, i have played the pc almoste xclusively, CoH and the like. The one day, a friend asked me "you play smash bros.?" of course, i hadnt in a looooong time but i answered "yeah", so he came over and we started playing and hes been coming over just about every day and playing. es muy divertido.
So, answering this... alot of the major gaming companies have made their controllers very comfortable. The GC one feels like it was made for my hands... feels like im playing nothing at all. The above mentioned game seems geared for all audiences as it has never ending content, alot of bright colors, and simple controls that take twenty minutes to learn but a lifetime to master.... if more games were like that alot more people would be playing them, but paying a lot less because if they were all the same you wouldnt need to get the new one every time it comes out...
i especially love the bright colors. i giggle like an insane little school girl everytime i make something explode
Thanks to Death Fetish for kicka$$ siggy!!!
