| To RP, or not RP...That is the question! |
|
|

Hi all, just wanted to get a feel from those out there...do you plan to RP in LOTRO? I know personally I have played almost every MMO out there and was never a big RP'r, but Tolkien brings out my creative side and I truly want to explore that. Anyone else feel the same?

I RP in every game that I play in - that is what draws me the most to MMORPG's - the role play. The chance to be my own character for awhile and escape the realities of the world - to have fun, explore, talk smack to orcs and lift a few pints with friends.
It isn't all about slaying demons and monsters or fighting evil at every turn - there is so much more to these games than one can imagine - well actually - if you imagine there is tons of stuff to do, to see, and to "be".

1st off welcome to the site, Bloodwurm!
As for the question, I tend to rp in all the MMOs I play also. I don't usually rp from the very beginning, I like to learn the game some, and get a good idea of the world that I'm playing in, so I can create a good background for my characters. But I've always felt that rp'ing adds a bit more fun to the game, and helps me get even more into it.

I try to RP as much as I can, but it can ruin the experience alot when all you see is guys with names like '1337_ubah_pwner' running around in the world. I like the namerestrictions in LOTRO... Alot!
I've been playing Neverwinter Nights on various RP modules since the release, have tried DAoC and other MMO's like Lineage 2, but it's almost impossible to RP in that kind of games. I hope, and think, LOTRO will be different!
Let's hope the 12 year olds sticks with WoW..

Yes, I'm loving the naming restrictions! It seems they are really cracking down w/ them in LOTRO. Makes me happy.
And I have to say I disagree w/ not being able to RP in L2. One of my favorite characters to RP ever was in L2. Of course she was an orc, and well, most people just tried to figure out what I was saying, but usually went along well w/ it. It could be that I threatened them a lot though, "Burtha smash!".

Yeah, well you could RP in L2, but it was hard to find(at least it was for me) others that RP:ed too.
Just remembered I didn't play on the original server when I tried that game, I played on one of the many other unofficial, free servers. That might be the reason when I think of it.. :P
Anyway, I got a hang of the dwarven dialect pretty good when RP:ing in Neverwinter nights, so I'll put it to good use in LOTRO. ^^
I hope this game will attract more of the mature players, rather than the 'Buy my gold on ebay-powerleveler-no RP at all' kind of players.

Ahhh the "unofficial servers". That could explain it. I do have to say, there weren't a lot of RP'ers that I ran into, but no one stopped me from RP'ing.

Roleplaying in the Lord of the Rings, I feel, will be like putting butter on your toast, or cream cheese on a bagel. Or something on stuff that's better with stuff on it!
I am going to get into it a great deal when the game releases (I don't think I would devote time roleplaying if I get into Beta). I'll even try to stay in-character 100% of the time. The reason why I like to roleplay is that by making others feel immersed in the world then they gain a little confidence most of the times and roleplay as well. So, in a way, everything's "groovy" as a friend of mine from MxO likes to put.
I'd say try to enjoy the game as a game first and foremost. After you get the hang of it, start delving into your character's shoes and see where things take you.

Very well put Sykin... I myself am a passive RPer, meaning that I don't do it all the time, but I also don't do things that would break immersion for another player either.
I do think that RP in LotRO is akin to the analogies you used, butter on toast, cream cheese on bagel type thing. The setting just begs for it in my opinion :)

I hardly ever going into RP mode but I do not destroy immersion for other folks either. I guess I am more like Mel - passive RP'er but to the extreme end of that. One has to have the energy to truly RP properly, which I don't have much of. I do not mind others RPing though. I definitly do not like the l33t speakers - drives me nuts.

I'm pretty much in between, too. My speech and diction ingame doesn't change, so I'm not using "thee" and "thou" but neither am I "lolz!11!!eleventy!!!"-ing either.
I might throw one out there iconically, to make people laugh. And sometimes I use "Hail!" instead of "Hello," but that is the extent of it. I guess I just don't view my chat as my character's voice the way others do. It's still me talking and I'm talking to other players, not their characters.
But I'm not a killjoy, I try my best to keep up if I encounter someone who is RPing. We are all playing the game for a good time, I'm not looking to ruin it for someone else.

Well, for me it will be about my character interacting with everyone regardless. If they say something like 'dood nice loots' I'll probably reply with 'Hmm... Thank you, stranger. Your accent is quite different in these lands.'
Something along those lines, heh. And I always got to shout things while fighting. 'Aim for the beast's knees! Bring it down!'
It's more or less a very mindful experience for me. I like to keep my wit sharp and roleplaying in any situation does it for me. I like to generate types of in-character responses on the fly... It really helps keep my literary skills in shape.

Roleplaying for me kinda comes naturally. I guess it is from to many years playing table top games (I'm a recovering RP'er). After I learn a game a bit, my character kinda develops their own personality. Based on that I create a backstory for them (even if I never write it down, I have it in my mind). And I tend to get in character the more I play them.

I plan to roleplay in LoTRO, little character hooks and an accent do a lot to make a character memorable and make the game more enjoyable at least for me. Besides its good for drawing people out and making friends, I have found few things more enjoyable than turning a game quest into a grand adventure for the rest of my group. Not to mention the fact that it amuses me when I start seeing bits of my assumed accent show up in the speech of my adventuring companions after we have been running together for awhile.

I play CoH and have 4 characters I RP and 4 I don't. People on the game STILL think I'm a goth cheerleader or a overzealous freedom fighting marine. I plan to do the same with this game. Have at least one RP and one non-RP.
I recommend to all who have never tried roleplaying, to try it at least once. You may get hooked on it. LARPing takes a little extra effort, but with an already-established basis of information about the World of Middle-Earth already established, you shouldn't have a problem learning from others on how to act or react in this game. Glad to hear I wasn't the only one who started RP'ing at a young age (yep, I've been a nerd all my life). I think you should give it a try and see if you enjoy it. If not, it isn't hard to stop.

I really actually enjoyed LARP'ing when I did it. It just seemed to enhance the RP experience for me. Also I loved dressing up *grin*. But everyone should be warned about the addictions of RP'ing... um... RP'ing is addicting!

Roleplaying is certainly fun and for the most part, a lot of people do it correctly... however the use of "thee" and "thou" or any of the Elizabethan language, actually, just is kind of a peeve of mine. I find it just as immersive to RP without using it.
Let's face it, Tolkien didn't write LotR in that fashion, and he is basically the father of that genre. I say use the language you're given and leave the immersion to the story lines.... it's a lot more enjoyable that way.
That's just my opinion anyway.

Definitely, Meldarion. Tolkien didn't write in that King James style and most of the time when people immitate that they get it horribly wrong. Provided, there are many dialects in Middle-earth and, although dialogue in the stories was usually on the romantic/poetic side at times, I favor simplicity with a hint of allusion usually.

As for myself I tend to spend about half my time as a Roleplayer and the other half as a Gamer.
For the Roleplay side of me I tend to follow the Full Contact Roleplay guidelines that a few friends and I came up with back in 2000 while playing Everquest.
I wrote a summary of the guidelines on the Gray Council of Arnor Forums. The link is listed below for those that wish to read them.
Full Contact Roleplay
This type of Roleplaying seems to work best for me. I've never been one for Message Board RP or Scripted events where the outcome is known in advance or responses are planned. It seems to lose a lot of the excitement when I cannot improvise to the situation.
As for how often I will roleplay in the game, that will depend on the situation as well as the people that I encounter once we are in the world.
For myself, I tend to stay in-character as long as I am around those that do so as well. If I am with others that choose not to roleplay, then I react accordingly and revert to the real me for the time being.
It's all about who you are with at the time and the context of the situation.
I remain,
Mymir

Sometimes I roleplay, other times I am me in MMO, depends on situation or who i am playing with at the time. I love other people roleplaying as well though, makes me chuckle and often get involved when I see it happening.
I think the setting for this will promote more roleplaying and that can only be a good thing. :-)
