Hi everyone. I'm currently in my final year of a BA Games Art & Design degree and for my final dissertation I am concentrating on MMORPGs, specifically the role that a number of factors such as gender, culture and anonymity play in our choices and behaviour when playing. I've composed a questionairre that has already given me lots of interesting info on the subject and was hoping some of you lovely people might assist me by filling it out. Any responses would be appreciated.
The Questions

Firstly, welcome to Gameamp. ^^ As for you Questionnaire....
The Questions
1. Brandon Elliott Mills
2. 22
3. Male
4. Customer Service
5. United States of America
6. What gender is your main character/s?
Female
7. If your main character/s is/are of a different gender to yourself, why do you think you choose to play as the opposite sex?
I really have no reason, but I guess what I'm about to say explains it. If I'm gonna look at an arse all day, it might as well be a good looking one. :)
8. If your main character/s is/are the same gender as yourself, why do you think you choose to play as your own gender? Would you consider playing as the opposite gender? If not, why not?
N/A
9. You are playing using Teamspeak and discover one of the players is a different gender to their character. Is this likely to make you react? Would it change your attitude toward that player?
No, it wouldn't chance my attitude towards the person/s in question. It is just a fantasy game afterall.
10. Have you ever had a conversation in game with a stranger about something non-game related?
Yes, I want say I do it all the time. But you can find some rather intelligent people in the gaming community. You can have some excellent converstations.
11. Have you ever had a conversation in game with someone you knew IRL about something non-game related?
Yes, I did that alot with my cousion when he played Guild Wars.
12. Do you often use the game as a means of finding people to chat to?
No, not really. I'm not really a talkative guy, I just don't go out and find converstations. But if there is something going on that I find worthy of talking about, I'll indulge myself.
13. Have you ever had a ‘deep & meaningful’ conversation with a stranger in game?
Yes, and that refers to question 10.
14. Have you ever had a deep and meaningful conversation with someone you knew in game?
No, I can't say that I have.
15. Have you ever attended a non-game event inside the game world i.e. a wedding, funeral, etc? If so, please give details.
Yes, I have stubbled upon a few ingame Weddings. It was rather fun. I haven't been to any other event though.
16. Have you ever met someone in game that you later met IRL?
No, I have yet to do that.
17. Have you ever met someone in game that you later had a relationship with IRL?
No, I can't say that I have.
18. When roaming the wilderness do you prefer to travel a)Alone b)with NPCs or henchmen or c)with groups of human players?
It really depends on my mood. I'll sometimes solo, group with NPC's, or with guildies.
19. When travelling with groups do you prefer to travel with a)people you know IRL b)people in your guild or flist or c)complete strangers?
I prefer to travel with Guilides, but I have been in a few PUG's.
20. Are their particular races or professions you would rather not be present in the team. If so, why?
There isn't really any bad class/race. All have their strenghts and weakness'.
21. Would you rather travel with a mixed sex group or a solely boy/girl group?
Mixed is just fine with me. Being a game, you can't really tell who is male or female.
22. You are in a newly formed group of strangers. Someone makes a racist/sexist comment. How would you react? a)ignore it, b)be ok with it, c)join in, d)whisper them a personal warning, e)stop immediately and encourage the group to boot them, f)leave the group, g) inform the maintainers/moderators of the game, h)something else?
It really depends on the situation at had. Sometimes you can tell if they are joking or not. Granted, there is never a need for snud remarks. If I have a great concern for it, I express my feelings. And if the individual/s are still instisting on doing it, I will leave the group. Though that rarely happens.
23. Do you feel the anonymity afforded you by the game affects your attitude and behaviour toward other players?
No, it doesn't effect my attitude with other players.
24. Have you ever said something to a stranger in game that you wouldn’t say to them in person?
No, I try to be a truthful person. Be it ingame or real life.
25. Have you ever said anything in game to a friend that you wouldn’t say in real life?
No, and that refers question 24.
I hope this helps you. :)

N/A
8. If your main character/s is/are the same gender as yourself, why do you think you choose to play as your own gender? Would you consider playing as the opposite gender? If not, why not?
I see my characters as virtual representations of myself. I see it like this because my actions direct my character, so indirectly I am my caracter. So I would not play a female character.

8. If your main character/s is/are the same gender as yourself, why do you think you choose to play as your own gender? Would you consider playing as the opposite gender? If not, why not?
I chose it because I didn't want people lusting after my chars. :P I might consider it.

I would be suprised, but nothing would change.

Yes.

Don't know anyone who plays GW in RL.
12. Do you often use the game as a means of finding people to chat to?

Yes.

All three.
20. Are their particular races or professions you would rather not be present in the team. If so, why?
Nope. I love seeing new ideas and new cultures.
21. Would you rather travel with a mixed sex group or a solely boy/girl group?
Mixed.
22. You are in a newly formed group of strangers. Someone makes a racist/sexist comment. It all depends on the context/usage of said comment. If it's meant in jest and the person who should be offended instead enjoys it, I'll join in. But if we're in with strangers or it's meant in malice, I'll publicly denounce that person and recommend booting him/her.
23. Do you feel the anonymity afforded you by the game affects your attitude and behaviour toward other players?
Yes.

4. High school student
5. Denmark
6. Male/Female
7. Better looking armor, to have diversity
8. I started my main character male because I believe it's the best first hand choice since I'm male, in terms of looks. I also choose from the profession I'm playing. Warriors and Rangers are always male but monks and ele's are always female.
I would, all male characters gives a boring feel to my character-screen. I like diversity.
9. I wouldn't be suprised at all. This happens alot, at least with female characters being boys IRL. Alot rarer is it to find a girl playing a male character.
10. Yes
11. Alot^^
12. I do, but not often. I mostly talk to people and get to know them better if I'm succesfull. Like guildm8s and such. I don't like talking alot with complete strangers.
13. No
14. No, that sort of conversations I keep IRL.
15. No, wish I had though^^
16. No
17. No
18. a) Alone
19. both a) and b)
20. I don't have anything against specific professions or races. Only people themselves
21. Mixed-sex. Once again diversity^^. Gives a nice change in dialog :P
22. h) I would anticipate other reactions and respond according to the overall feeling about it. If it involves into something that takes the attention of the players off the game and they just insult each other, I will usually threaten with leaving.
23. No, I still try to act as nice as I can towards strangers and normally towards players I know^^
24. No
25. No

1. NameI'd prefer not to disclose this
2. Age17
3. Sexno thanks, i'm happy to keep my virginity... oh I'm Male...
4. Occupation I'm a ranger! or if you must know IRL i'm a computer tech working for a privately owned business
5. Country of Residence the good ol'e US of A
6. What gender is your main character/s? Male
7. If your main character/s is/are of a different gender to yourself, why do you think you choose to play as the opposite sex?
N/A
8. If your main character/s is/are the same gender as yourself, why do you think you choose to play as your own gender? Would you consider playing as the opposite gender? If not, why not?
My avatar represents me in game... I wanted a accurate representation on my first character (who's not being played much anymore so i don't consider it my main) so i made it look as much like me as possible. My second character which is actually my main is just the character i have the most fun with, i'm not sure i'd have as much fun if it was a female and people were constantly calling me \"her\" or \"she\".
I do actually play some female characters, mostly because all of the male characters of that class look ugly =(
9. You are playing using Teamspeak and discover one of the players is a different gender to their character. Is this likely to make you react? Would it change your attitude toward that player?
You can figure it out usually long before you talk on TS with someone, and no it wouldn't bother me.
10. Have you ever had a conversation in game with a stranger about something non-game related?
All the time
11. Have you ever had a conversation in game with someone you knew IRL about something non-game related?
I have some friends who joined recently, so yes now i do
12. Do you often use the game as a means of finding people to chat to?
I don't need to find people to talk to, i can always just pick up the phone and call one of my friends IRL, much easier way of finding someone to talk to about stuff you have in common.
13. Have you ever had a ‘deep & meaningful’ conversation with a stranger in game?
nope
14. Have you ever had a deep and meaningful conversation with someone you knew in game?
Most of the people i know who i would willilngly have a deep and meaningful conversation with don't play GW
15. Have you ever attended a non-game event inside the game world i.e. a wedding, funeral, etc? If so, please give details.
I think i did once, i can't really remember
16. Have you ever met someone in game that you later met IRL?
Yes, though he was a friend of my cousins and we all played the same game(s) so one day we all met up at my cousin's house and goofed off for a while
17. Have you ever met someone in game that you later had a relationship with IRL?
well the person who i met in question 16 is now a semi-good friend, though never a romantic relationship if that's what you're referring to.
18. When roaming the wilderness do you prefer to travel a)Alone b)with NPCs or henchmen or c)with groups of human players?
I'm a very situational person, if i can solo the place i'll generally go that route, if i can't solo it i'll take henchmen, if nobody else in the guild is busy i'll take guildies. I like having guildies along with me for the most part though.
19. When travelling with groups do you prefer to travel with a)people you know IRL b)people in your guild or flist or c)complete strangers?
Guildies > All, people i know IRL would be next in line, but for the time being they don't have nearly as much experiance with the game as my guildies
20. Are their particular races or professions you would rather not be present in the team. If so, why?
In GW we don't really have races the same way other games like WoW and Lineage do, unless you mean black/white, in which case i'm not one to care what color a persons skin color is. professions on the other hamd... i'm a little biased against elementalists who claim to be \"nukers\" at the moment, as they really don't deal as much damage as the other damage classes, however i'm not gonna refuse one from the group.
21. Would you rather travel with a mixed sex group or a solely boy/girl group?
Do you mean avatars, or people behind them?
personally i don't care to much.
I'd yell at them in team chat and then recomend booting them from the group... unless of course it's someone i know and i know they're not meaning it in a malicious way.
23. Do you feel the anonymity afforded you by the game affects your attitude and behaviour toward other players?
I always try to play nice, afterall - it's just a game
however i do think that other people behave in game worse than they do IRL because of the annonimity
24. Have you ever said something to a stranger in game that you wouldn’t say to them in person?
I most likely wouldn't call anyone a n00b irl ;-)
25. Have you ever said anything in game to a friend that you wouldn’t say in real life?
No, if i have anything bad to say about a person i'd rather yell at them IRL than over a phone or video game.

First off:
Welcome to Gameamp, Onyx666 and Capblueberry! I hope you enjoy your stay and become part of the community. :-)
On-topic:
1. Name
prefer not to
2. Age
42
3. Sex
Male
4. Occupation
Self-employed
5. Country of Residence
U.S.A.
6. What gender is your main character/s?
Female
7. If your main character/s is/are of a different gender to yourself, why do you think you choose to play as the opposite sex?
Most of the time, they create more pleasant looking female characters and seem to make more detailed armor
8. If your main character/s is/are the same gender as yourself, why do you think you choose to play as your own gender? Would you consider playing as the opposite gender? If not, why not?
n/a
9. You are playing using Teamspeak and discover one of the players is a different gender to their character. Is this likely to make you react? Would it change your attitude toward that player?
no, its hard to assume ones gender by such methods
10. Have you ever had a conversation in game with a stranger about something non-game related?
no-nothing of any real value nor consequence
11. Have you ever had a conversation in game with someone you knew IRL about something non-game related?
no
12. Do you often use the game as a means of finding people to chat to?
no, never have
13. Have you ever had a ‘deep & meaningful’ conversation with a stranger in game?
never with strangers
14. Have you ever had a deep and meaningful conversation with someone you knew in game?
yes, only with 3 people-never with strangers or acquaintances
15. Have you ever attended a non-game event inside the game world i.e. a wedding, funeral, etc? If so, please give details.
have not run into one yet
16. Have you ever met someone in game that you later met IRL?
not yet
17. Have you ever met someone in game that you later had a relationship with IRL?
no, and don't plan to
18. When roaming the wilderness do you prefer to travel a)Alone b)with NPCs or henchmen or c)with groups of human players?
With henchmen. It is hard to play with other people when I have a specific set of objectives like exploration or battling a specific type of monster to learn things. Different people mean different styles and different objectives. I don't like to waste time, so I won't do that to them nor do I expect them to do so with mine-precious little, there is.
19. When travelling with groups do you prefer to travel with a)people you know IRL b)people in your guild or flist or c)complete strangers?
When I go into a group, it doesn't matter. At that point, I have opened myself to accept all possibilities/objectives/personalities/styles and approach it from that angle-it makes it easier to have fun.
20. Are their particular races or professions you would rather not be present in the team. If so, why?
Not so much a profession, but I prefer not to see a certain attitude
21. Would you rather travel with a mixed sex group or a solely boy/girl group?
Does not matter to me at all.
Something else as: I speak openly in team chat that such is an unacceptable action/attitude/conversation to have-I don't take this attitude in IRL, there's no way I will take ingame as well.
23. Do you feel the anonymity afforded you by the game affects your attitude and behaviour toward other players?
No. It seems that a large group of people take advantage of that anonymity and I will not stoop down to their level.
24. Have you ever said something to a stranger in game that you wouldn’t say to them in person?
Nope.
25. Have you ever said anything in game to a friend that you wouldn’t say in real life?
Nope.

I would probably just ignore it. Unless it really offended me then i would ask them to stop. I dont get easily offended or embrased.
23. Do you feel the anonymity afforded you by the game affects your attitude and behaviour toward other players?
I treat other players the way i would like to be treated. There is no need to be nasty to each other. Also in the end its just a game.
24. Have you ever said something to a stranger in game that you wouldn’t say to them in person?
Nope.
25. Have you ever said anything in game to a friend that you wouldn’t say in real life? Nope again.
Many thanks |
