| Question about downloading updates/game etc. |
|
|
|
Ok, i play guild wars on 2 computers. one of the computers has high speed, the other has dialup. I think that theres a way that i can download the update on the high speed, then load it on to the computer with dialup without getting it from the internet so i dont have to see 3 kb/second for 8hrs. Cred to those who help.

go into the guild wars folder. copy all of the material in there to a CD, then put that CD into the dial up computer, then just copy the guild wars folder into the one on the dial up comp.
Edit: Thats how i run my dual guild wars clients on one computer. But in order for it to work ALL of the updates have to be the same. otherwise it will only open one. Augh i can't find the build for making 2 guild wars clients on your computer...*sigh* sorry i tried.

In your Guild Wars folder, there should be a file called guildwars.dat (or maybe it's gw.dat) which contains all of the information like that. Copy it to a CD and paste it over, and you should have what you need. Only problem with this is that you have to copy gw.dat every time you get an update.

Thanks, But i think that copying it over would be ALOT easier than sitting there waiting.

If the two computers are in the same house "close to each other" try buying network cards and network them togther then you can just move the files over the network.
Also if you have say a few blank cd-rw's you can make a .rar files. Part them so be like gw.rar01, gw.rar02 or something similar and just fill what the cd-rw ca handle grab another one and keep doing it until it's done. Move to dial up computer copy over to a directory until you get all the files then open. should extract to one file. :) there you go.
Now if you have cable usly the basic plan is 1-2 computers alloud. So you can buy a router and put comp one in slot one and comp 2 in slot 2. there you go :). Just follow the instructions on the router/cable modem manuals.

One thing nobody has mentioned is to just leave it running the updates one night. On your GW shortcut, change the "Target:" box to say something like:
"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars\gw.exe" -image
This will force the game to completely update everything it possibly can in one giant chunk. (Meaning when you walk into towns, it wont "steam" a few files to you at a time.)
Be sure to remove this extra bit of info when you actually decide to play as it also causes the client to close after the updates are complete (and if there aren't any updates, it just closes the client anyways).
Let it run overnight or for a day or whatever and just let it churn through its work.

DVD's hold ~4 GB and BD (official acronym for BlurayDisc) holds 25 GB. Dual Layers hold double the amounts for both. If they indeed are not on the same Internet Connection, then this is the best option, given your Broadband computer has a DVD burner (-/+ RW even better. DVD-RAM is not, just a precaution) and the dialup comp has a DVD reader (in some cases for DVD-/+RW a -/+RW drive is necessary).
If they are in the same house, you should network them. If you decide to do this, I can help you more, as there is a lot of information and many ways to implement it.

I'm interested in this. Do you just have 2 instances of GW running, each from seperate directories? I don't have the space atm to try this, just curious.

The computers are not at the same house. So there not close to each other. If they were at the same house. I'd think that there would be High-Speed to both computers.
I'll look into getting a DVD disk and see how much they run for and what not.
The -Image thing on a dialup computer............ I cant imagine how long that would take. 56k some files.... Would not be pretty.

i might try this.

Yes it might take a damn long time on 56k, but at least it would work instead of just being speculation like the rest of these ideas. I'm just giving you another option.
You can bite the bullet and buy a DVD-R or you can bite the bullet and let 56k work its butt off for a few days.

you could always bring the computer with dial up over to the place with high speed, let it download the updates, and return it back to its place of origin.

That would work if the computers where in the same house or next door houses but best shot is either cd-rw's or dvd's. Or bring the tower to the cable house.. to the -image and wait. :)

wow, shotgun approach O.O
if both have dvd readers, and the hi speed one has a dvd writer, just use a dvd-r, they are like $.50 each now or close
if thats not an option, forget the dial-up let it run all night, do as suggested, use winrar (or winzip, ewwww) and rar it, select cd size in the dropdown, will make about 4 or 5 cd size files you can burn 1 each on a cd, take them to your pc, download those rar's to your descktop or wherever, and run winrar to extract your .dat file
for safety, rename your current dat on your 56k machine by adding a BKUP or something to the beginning or end of the current file name, i wouldnt recommend overwriting the original in case you had data corruption in one of the preceeding processes

You mean running the -image switch only to update, then take it out when people go to actually play I'm assuming, but there are issues where the client stops at "x files remaining."
If you haven't tried any of these yet, I'd go with Captain Bobby's idea. You don't spend money on discs and/or drives and you don't have to let it download for extended periods.

I'm probably gonna buy the dvdr disks cuz i think its the easiest. The way my computer is set up would take awhile to put one tower in take it out and put the other one in.
I'll probably make a run to best buy sometime and do it then.
