major virus/spyware issues

**EDIT** Apologies. I accidentally posted before finishing. Will have full info soon. **EDIT**

First off, I usually post as Pvt. Stash on these forums. I'm not usually active...more of a lurker really. I created this account because I'm on a friend's PC and he has some major security issues going on and I don't trust my passwords on his system. I'm at a complete loss with this monster he has, and I could really use a helping hand before telling him to reinstall his OS. Been working on this for the last 6-8 hours solid with no results.

System:
Some compaq laptop with low-mid range capabilities
Winxp fully updated
norton 2k5 - updated
spysweeper - updated

Scans used:
Panda Active Scan
Bit Defender
Norton 2005
spysweeper
bitdefender
spybot SD - shutdown by something in system but shows multiple hits before shutting down
HJT 1.99.1
lavasoft Adaware SE

Symptoms:
Suspicious system tray icon that flashes between red no smoking style cross out and standard blue windows question mark help icon. A pop up balloon says virus/malware is installed and click to fix. Upon clicking you go to this link:

**DO NOT GO TO THIS LINK** http://www.virusburst.com/?aff=334

No matter what I do I cannot get this icon out of system tray. I'm leery of HJT functions because this is not system.

My first scan using panda active ID'd 145 malware and 11 hacking tools on the system.

Adaware removed 190 malware.
Spybot identifies 10-15 malware and stops dead.
Bitdefender logged multiple hits. Namely:
trojan.zlob (multiple versions)
puper.bb
downloader.zlob
brazesentry.k
movieland.a
Lame Norton came up clean.

My main problem has been zlob. I've removed it multiple times through scans, but the damn thing keeps coming back. There's a downloader somewhere that works instantly and is reinstalling things as soon as I remove them. Whatever is the main problem here works faster than my scans do and just buries itself again as soon as I make progress.

I'm at a complete loss. Every scan I run pulls up something new. I've been working on things like this for a good 6-8 years and I've never found anything this nasty.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Stash

RE: major virus/spyware issues

If Adaware, Spybot, Norton doesn't help. Then the only option I see open is a complete system restore mate. The system should have came with a Restore Disc or a Windows XP disc.

That's what I'm thinking, but it's a neighbor's pc and I'm not sure if he even has the disks. I'm posting to the net as a last resort before I tell him that he has to completely repartition.

If this was my system I would have wiped it already. When you get something like this then odds are you have some sort of keylogger or worm. When that happens it's time to change the passwords you have because it's just plain easier to do than chase all your info down.

I suggesting making him use FireFox. Since I have used it, I have yet to get any spyware, adware, or virus' on my computer. xD

blow it away with how infected it is. You could have downloaders lurking all over the system and hiding in the registry.

I might just be really tired but I do not see anything suspicious in the HJT File that may be causing all your grief.

I just can't tell enough times: norton antivirus is anything but a good virus removal tool. Same goes for Panda. Try nod32, or AVG (though nod32 is better...) And actually a software firewall like kerio 2.1 (NOT 4.*) might also do good for you.

Actually I see about 16 entries that might lead to unwanted system behaviour, i.e. slowdowns, temporary hangups and wasting a lot of system resources. All lines has the word "Symantec" or "Norton" in them...

I'm not good about all that anti virus junk (Use firefox, havn't ever gotten any)

But I hear this virus removal 4 step thing works a charm

1: Get a powerful magnet, and a big, big hammer
2: Put the magnet insdie the computer and shake
3: Smash computer with big, big hammer
4: Take out magnet, hide wreckage.

;)

Norton isn't too good, neither is Mcafee.Personally I use the latest version of AVG (free edition) and have had no problems at all along with Firefox as my browser.

You could disable some of the unnecessary programs at start up by going to "Start" and "Run" then type in "msconfig" once there go to startup and disable the additional unnecessary programs.I saw quite a few from your log. That can get rid of some memory hogs and programs causing slow downs.

Try downloading Lavasoft's Ad-aware from their official page

www.lavasoft.com
or
www.downloads.com

Update to the most recent definitions and then perfora full system scan.

EDIT - Okay nevermind just saw that you have ad-aware listed.

RE: major virus/spyware issues

There are only 2 things I use on my PC to keep it virus and spyware clean, i suggest you go for Avast Antivirus, its a free antivirus software, and all it requires is you to register online once a year, I believe it is a really crazy software. Try it. You can download it from Here

The other thing i use is Adaware, i believe it to be the best in spy/malware removal. After installing avast! try rebooting in safe mode and THEN use both adaware and Avast..hopefully that should help. Oh and Norton i believe is the absolute worst in Antivirus software, it hogs the PC resources so think about removing that :D hehe, tell me how it goes.

Have you started the computer in safemode without networking to try and scan with programs?Sometimes it's more successful to remove things that way since not everything is fully operational.

i use winantivirus and im very happy with it, i checked my system, it was slowed down 30% by norton... i removed it now!

now everything works fine, but you need to try to get into your operators system and check all your software you have on your computer. if you see something you dont know, quarantine it!!

Interesting tip. I do, however, need to point out that all antivirus and spyware applications are simply reactive tools. They only recognize you have a problem after their respective programmers have recognized a problem. Relying on one, and only one scan can many times be just as bad as not using one at all for the fact that some viruses and malware are specifically designed to shut down major antimalware scans. You have an example of this in my OP.

After passing out drunk working on this thing last night, I woke up today with fresh eyes and stumbled upon these fun little bits:

Virusburst:
vb.exe
http://www.superadblocker.com/definition/vb/
If you don't feel like reading the link info, vb.exe is a clone of the spywareQuake trojan that's been running rampant lately. It's one of those things you pray you don't ever get.

Drive Cleaner:
UDC2006.exe
Not a tough fix, but an annoyance.

Popcorn.net:
YAY!

I'm off to try to fix this stuff. [/U]

RE: major virus/spyware issues

Just following up, and thanks to all who gave info.

Finally got the laptop restored. Found over 300 spyware apps and a few hijacks and the like.

VirusBurst had to be manually removed in safe mode by deleting the application (which was nicely hidden in the program files buried under 4-5 directories with no link in start menu) and then manually removing any registry keys I could find. Whoever wrote that one really pisses me off.

Strangely the thing popped up once and then after rebooting it was gone again. No problems since. Odd.

All in all cleaning this mess up took about 20 hours of work, but it was worth it because I got a free case of beer out of the deal. :D

Thanks again.

It's funny you say that since Symantec recently did some research into browser security and comprehensively tested a all the most common browsers.
Internet Explorer as expected was full of security leaks of all sorts but still made it to a nice second spot with this.
On the first spot, with even more leaks we find Firefox and as much as I hate Symantec's software - knowing that it's rubbish - that still doesn't make them newcomers to the world of ICT security.
They know what they're talking about.

And actually it's not so hard to imagine either seeing as Firefox has grown immensely popular over the past time.
It can be compared with the fact that people always say Windows suck compared to other operating systems and that Windows security is one big flaw.
Why do people think this? Because lots of things that shouldn't get into a computer do get in right?

But in all honesty, the security in Windows is really, however hard it may be to believe, immensely good.
Only problem is it has to copy with so much more human creativity than any other OS... it's just beyond imagination.
And with that kind of attention, any OS will be insecure in the end.
Also let's not forget that any security system is only as good as the configuration done by it's administrator.
