Why not all of them? You can re-use a PvP slot as many times as you like without loesing the skills and other stuff you've unlocked.

Well for pvp you can create and delete characters all you want so it isn't a big deal. You can start off with something fairly simple like a w/mo, or you could try one of the premade builds. It's all up to you, if you like to stay on the backlines shutting people down, try mesmer, if you want to heal your teamates try monk, if you want to run in and deal heavy damage go warrior. Experimenting is key.

Firslty, welcome to GuildWars@GameAmp and Guild Wars for that matter. ^^ As for which is best, thre really is no best for PvP. All can play an extremely good roll. Monks of course, are monks. Great support if played right. Ele's are good for Damage and support. Necros are good for Degen. Mesmers are good for support, shutdown, and degen. Warriors are good for damage and taking it. Ritualist are good for Damage and support, and Assassins are good for sneak attacks. ^^ It really depends on your playstyle. :)

If you are new to PvP I would definitely reccomend trying out the premade builds that A-net provide when you go to make a PvP character. They're a great way to learn what type of thing you want to play. Try doing random arenas and the Zaishen Challenge and see how you do.
Most pvp players can play a wide veriety of professions, not just tied down to one, because of the ability to "reroll", or change the character rapidly. Also don't forget that you can use PvE characters in PvP. The only advantage pvp characters have over pve is that they have access to all the runes/item mods/skills etc that you've unlocked.

Just a clarification, if he really is just starting, and wanted to do PvP, wouldn't he have to use one of the premade builds? Considering that he probably has no skills unlocked on his account.

Erm, yep, good point. Unless he's bought any of the *cough* overpriced *cough* skill unlock packs, he doesn't have much choice.

For doing a lot of damage fast, probably assassin, elementalist, necromancer, or mesmer is best (though I'd strongly recommend against starting with a Mesmer; they're by far the most challenging class to play). For not dying, you'd want a warrior or ranger, but not a war/mo; wars simply don't have the energy to sustain monk healing, anticondition, or antihex spells. Rangers will actually tend to die a bit less than wars will because they're farther away.
Really, anything you choose will be able to not die in PvP if you avoid attacks well (though that's something that comes with experience and can't really be taught). If you want straight damage, Elementalist is the way to go, but your durability will be somewhat limited.
Oh, and I'd really say that you should start with a roleplaying character and work your way up through a campaign at least once before you really start on PvP. It'll help you learn how the different classes act and work together a lot better than jumping straight into pvp.
