Exploring more of the MMORPG realm

Hi, I've been playing FFXI for over a year now and I was wondering what the differences were between the two games. No I don't mean the classes or the battle system or anything like that. Game mechanics and fundamentals are something I can pick up on my own. One thing that kept me in FFXI as long as it did was the community. My guild (we call them linkshells) What is the player base like? Is it constantly spamming people for PvP or are you able to spend your career playing co-op. If I could go my entire character career without a single one on one with another player I would be happy. Is the playerbase helpful? Is it easy to get a group together? Do people scream "n00b" every 15 seconds? Which is why I chose not to go to WoW. Any input is appreciated, thanks!

First, welcome to our little corner of the Internet.

Second, let's start answering questions:
The player base as a whole is very helpful. There are a few bad eggs around, but overall most people you meet will be nice.

There are distinct arenas for PvP, and they're all in a seperate continent from all the other stuff. You won't see people spamming for PvP unless you go to those places, and there is no such thing as a PKer in the PvE zones; it's impossible due to game mechanics, actually. There's only one time when you're forced to do PvP in the Prophecies campaign, and that's minor and can be skipped if you want to (it's near the very beginning of the game, where most people are level 3-6 and have very limited skills).

As of right now, there's no one on one PvP matches at all (though you can create them in guilde scrimmages if you desire). Actually, due to the way the game works, any 1v1 match would really just come down to who was more prepared to face the other person's specific build.

As I said before, the playerbase is very helpful, especially here on gameamp (shameless plug!).

It's usually pretty easy to get a group together for most things, and when it's not, there are computer-controlled henchmen at every town in the game who you can take instead. The henchies are good enough that anything in the game is possible with just you and them (people have even done the last mission in the game without any skills or weapons and a team of only henchmen), but they almost always are inferior to a human team.

There's a few noobs that will use the term noob, but they're noobs and you can generally ignore or avoid such noobish behavior :)

You really should try out the game, though. It's very different from any other MMO games out there, so it isn't really comparable in many ways.

RE: Exploring more of the MMORPG realm

Hey there! I was a FFXI player like yourself before i found Guild Wars. GW is ALOT more fast paced. Remember waiting hours for invites? or disbanding when you couldnt find a tank, healer or enough damage dealers? Kiss that bullcrap goodbye. The Pvp experience of GW smokes ffxi's 'Ballista" which i wouldnt really call pvp anyways.

The community is very solid as this site is just one of many great examples. Sure you are gonna find some bad guilds that are run poorly, but it was the same with Linkshells in FFXI.
I know you will love this game.

PS: The classes are better balanced too :)

Haha, I don't care if the PvP is better or if the classes are balanced. FFXI has player issues not job issues anyways, the jobs all have their proper places...but I digress. The LFG times didn't bother me much either (I was a career WAR) All I ask is an easy to use interface, a good community, realish (Not necessarily realistic) graphics (Kiss my ass WoW) and a decent economy. I forgot to ask about the economy too. Are some items that can only be crafted left out of reach for months at a time due to lack of interest on the buyers/crafters end or is pretty much anything available to those that desire it and I don't mean TECHNICALLY within reach like going 0 for 45 on Leaping Lizzie and thining if I go 46 times I'll get the damn boots, I mean realistically within reach, even if it means I have to buy it.

Excellent Graphics

There isnt the must have Ridill or any of that jazz because all weapons are capped at a certain speed and damage depending on thier type.

The economy (to me) is alot more reasonable then FFXI because there is no auction house (not to mention bots) driving prices up and knocking prices down constantly.

No spawn camping as everything is instanced, and yeah i remember leaping lizzy. Most everything is within reach in this game. Godly armor doesnt equal stats in GW only looks :)

Maximum-damage weapons with perfect inherent bonuses are readily available at what's called collectors from the Crystal Desert onwards in the Prophecies Campaign and from Kaineng City onwards in the Factions Campaign. You just have to kill enough monsters to get 5 of their special "collectable" drop (each monster has an item that only their species drops, like Griffon Wings, Troll Tusks, and the like), which tend to make up 40-60% of the drops from that given monster type. In other words, it's extremely easy to get an unmodded perfect weapon (PvP-specific characters actually start with them and can have them modded as you so desire within some limits). Weapon mods come from most weapons that enemies drop, though perfect ones are relatively rare. For pricing, 1000 gold is about 2 minutes' work in high-level areas with a solo farm build (which are absurdly easy to make for some creatures), while a weapon mod will usually go for 1k-60k on the market. However, a perfect weapon mod that goes for 60k gold will be only 1% better than a near-perfect one that goes for 20k, so getting good stuff doesn't take long.

Also, maximum level armor is available from collectors at the same areas, though it won't have special bonuses that armor that you pay an NPC to craft is. Max-level armor costs approximately 10k gold to craft (1500 gold per piece, 5 pieces, and then materials).

There ARE some items that require months of farming to get, but they have absolutely no statistical benefit. They're quite literally just vanity wear. 15k armor, so called because it costs 15000 gold to craft each piece before materials (so a whole set costs 80-90k), is the first of these. Fissure of Woe armor, which is craftable only in an elite zone (where all other armor crafters are in town), also costs 15000 gold per piece to craft, but takes the rare Ectoplasm and Obsidian Shard materials to make, which brings the cost to approximately 1.5 million gold to make a set.

There's also vanity weaponry, but that comes from other players. I've never seen nor heard of anything that cost more than 100k gold and 250 globs of ectoplasm (meaning about 2 million gold), and even that's extremely rare; very few items cost more than 30k, and even fewer cost more than 120k.

RE: Exploring more of the MMORPG realm

The answer to all your questions is: "the game is what you make of it"

--------------------------------

The economy is very simple in GW. Many complain too simple, I like it that way. You can get everything you need on your own. If you want vanity items you can grind like crazy and play the auctionless market if you want to.

The community is kind of what you make of it. It took me quite a long time to find a group of online only friends I really enjoyed playing with. But I never actively seeked it out either. The game got a lot more fun at that point.

There is WAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY too much use of nerdy gamer terms like: noob, leet, 1337, ftw, ftl etc. I've never play a mass multiplayer game that didn't have way too much use of those words for my taste. Once again, you have your choice of communicating with those people or not.

The local chat can be filled with annoying people, and many (not all) veterains turn off local chat by default. I imagine any game is like that.

In most cities, there will be people spouting there mouths off. In most cities people will often be helpful if you ask politely. In most cities, other players are there for the same thing you are there for, which proves quite convenient.

I have beaten every mission in the first chapter of Guild Wars with computer controled henchmen. There were a few cities that were too hard to do that my first time through. But theoretically, yes, you can do the whole game solo. My first time was about half solo, half with strangers. There is some content I don't think I could hench, but only missions are critical to advancing the storey of the game.

RE: Exploring more of the MMORPG realm

From what you all say it sounds like there are only two big differences from most other MMORPGs I've heard about, one being the economy and the other is the gameplay setup (menus, battle system, etc.) So, what should I expect on my first day? A lot of running around lost as is usually the case on the first day of an MMO?

RE: Exploring more of the MMORPG realm

First off: Welcome to Gameamp, Darktower!

As to what to expect on your first day, I don't think should worry you at all. I had never played an online RPG in my life. My only experiences with RPG's were the FF7-X/X-2 series (along with a few others). I picked up on the "nutshell" mechanics/gameplay in a day or so. Being that you come from FFXI, I think you would hit the ground running, so to speak. :)

I have been playing nearly 16 months, have a character for each primary profession - I still have fun!!

I hope you find it to your liking. :-)

RE: Exploring more of the MMORPG realm

Well first ill say welcome. Second Ill say if you cannot get the game and figure it out for yourself. Then there is no sense in discussing "Game Mechanics" FFXI, is a completely different game. Wow, has good graphics... And Gw is a pvp based game. So if you dont care for pvp dont play it. End Thread.
