ok so...
for info on bow differences go here

There is sadly no crossbows, not yet in GW neway

attacks? well barrage or punishing shot are my faves but broard arrow is good, that is for elites.
As for otheres, one of the following 3; kindle arrow, read the wind or ignite arrows (imo always good to have at least 1 preperation unless you have barrage)
savage shot, pin down, troll unguent, whirling defense, throw dirt.
You will mostly learn what skills go with your fighting style as you go along.

Rangers have a nice range of conditions and it depends where you are as to what you use, in an UW run crippling, bleeding and blind are the most effective...whereas when farming poison imo, is best.

1 good build is the korean runner, or cripple shot ranger, it is basically a ranger with apply poison and crippling shot, with a few interrupts and running stances, the point is to slowly degen the enemy while you stay at a safe distance.
OR
The much hate ranger toucher, basically use vamp touch and vamp gite with offering of blood as your energy management and 16 expertise and have whiling defense, throw dirt and plauge touch for when there are too many foes or conditioners.
OR
Bunny Thumper

also, i feel that a pet is helpful early on in game and when with henchies or solo, l8r on in the game unless you are a beastmaster or a bunny thumper ppl won't b very impressed (unless they are me i love the pets :D)

Hope this helps, btw, when i started this there were no answer posts in the thread, so sorry if there is sum1 else above me :P

RE: Help...I Know nothing about rangers.

Well, for the technical aspects, I'd check out guildwiki. Here is the info on all types of bows:

QUOTE
Weapon  Refire Rate  Range  Flight Time2  Arc Size  Special Feature
Longbow  2.4 seconds  1.6  0.59 seconds  Normal  None
Flatbow  2.0 seconds  1.6  0.88 seconds  Large  None
Hornbow  2.7 seconds  1.4  0.59 seconds  Normal  10% Armor penetration
Recurve Bow  2.4 seconds  1.4  0.40 seconds  Small  None
Shortbow  2.0 seconds  1.05  0.59 seconds  Normal  None

Flatbows have been my favorite bow type for a long time, but I'm starting to get annoyed with them. They are great for shooting from far away and attacking over obstacles, but they do miss an awful lot. Recently I have countered this by taking favorable winds with me everywhere, which works great with a flatbow. But I pretty much use flatbows and recurves exclusively.

There is no crossbow, at least not yet, though it would be a cool feature.

All of the bow attacks are good, and they all have their place. Barrage is one of the all around best for PvE, but I have used many different ones depending on the situation. It all depends on what you are doing, one of the best things about rangers is their variability.

Some of the best conditions, I would say, are poison and dazed. Rangers can also inflict crippled, bleeding, blind, and on fire. There are several ranger attacks that daze, and it is just one of my favorite conditions, watching casters get completely shutdown, even on their really fast casts, is just hilarious. There are elites that inflict these conditions, poison arrow, broadhead arrow, and crippling shot, melandru's arrows, incendiary arrows. There are also non-elites that can inflict them, but obviously aren't as good, apply poison, concussion shot, pin down, hunter's shot, burning arrow, throw dirt.

I don't do much PvP, but I have done a Rspike with my ranger, and I have seen a barrage-way in HA too, was the only time I have fought in Halls, they beat my team. There are always spirit spammers, though they have likely lost their place in most builds due to the downsizing, actual spikers are more important.

My ranger is my first and main character, and I'm really glad that I started with a ranger. I really enjoyed playing the class, and I think it taught me a lot about the game mechanics that people who start with warriors don't learn. Playing a sin is probably somewhat similar, in that you are supposed to stay at the backline and pick off weak targets. The main advantage over sins though, obviously, is that you don't actually have to run into combat to do it, you can snipe them.

Edit: that table didn't come out very well, but it came from the link in style_boy's reply, so just go there.

The different bow types have different attack speeds, ranges, and arc heights (a higher arc means the arrow takes longer to hit the target and thus is less accurate, while a lower arc means the arrow hits sooner and is more accurate). Hornbows have low rate of fire, medium range, and medium arc (though it automatically ignores 10% of an enemy's armor). Longbows have low RoF, long range, and medium arc, Flatbows have high RoF, long range, and high arc, Recurve Bows have medium RoF, medium range, and low arc, and shortbows have high RoF, short range, and low arc. In general, Recurve Bows are the best all-around in PvP due to their high accuracy and decent range, Flatbows are best in PvE since accuracy doesn't matter (enemies don't dodge in PvE), while Shortbows have the highest average damage per second.

No crossbows in the game as yet; maybe later.

Good bow attacks usually means a high-damage attack or one that causes a Condition, an interrupt, and maybe another Condition or damage attack. Bows can cause poison with the Apply Poison preperation or the Poison Arrow elite, bleeding with Hunter's Shot, several Preperations, or other elite skills, Cripple with Pin Down or Crippling Shot, or burning with the Incendiary Arrows elite. Stacking Bleeding and Poison on enemies makes a pretty good pressure build in itself, and CripShot rangers are pretty big in the current GvG and HA metagame.

Rangers can be a good pressure build by hitting everyone on an enemy team with Poison Arrow or Apply Poison and Crippling Shot. They can also make good interrupters; Ranger interrupt attacks can interrupt anything, unlike Mesmer interrupts which usually only deal with Spells (though Mesmer interrupts are much more damaging or debilitating). Rangers can also do the Bunny Thumper build, which involves taking a hammer and a pet and beating people up with them both, as well as energy denial with various Spirits, Debilitating Shot, and secondary class skills.

Also, you're best off sitting on a hill someplace and sniping from near your maximum range rather than going up close and personal. Being above your target increases your range and seems to increase critical hit rate, while being at or near maximum range means that enemies are less likely to be able to hit you back. Rangers are also highly mobile; take advantage of speed buffs to get away from enemy Warriors or Assassins while still staying in range of your target with your long range. There have been cases I've seen of a single Ranger with Crippling effects take down 2 or 3 enemies by hitting them, backing off, hitting them again, backing off, and just doing that until they fell dead.

RE: Help...I Know nothing about rangers.

as far as bows go, heres a situation, if i were asked whihc of the bows i wanted, and it was each type of bow, each one was perfect, except the horn bow, 20/11 sundering with enchants last 19% longer 15v50, id pick the hornbow, simply because of the inherit stats it has with it

i too like horn bows but after reading this properly, it has the shortest range (shorter than shortbow o_O? is that right?) and it has longest reshot time, so although it has +10% sundering with shorter reshot it will prolly do less dmg than say a shortbow would.

RE: Help...I Know nothing about rangers.

Well yeah i kno some of the cookie cutter builds that everyone uses but I mean like Skill chaining. Like in the assassin profesion.

Signet of Midnight
Signet of Malice
Signet of Shadows
Unseen Fury

Thx for that guide to the bows. Helped a lot. didn't kno any of that besides longbow reaches far and short bows....don't.

Also what are some good spirts to take that might throw some people off. Like I saw fertile season which seamed ok to me.

OH and I knew about the Expertise sin too. Add that to my list =D

RE: Help...I Know nothing about rangers.

Well, skill chaining is something that is almost unique to assassins. Of course there are some skills that work very well with others, but pretty much you will be using your skills when you need to, not necessarily chaining them. For instance, my typical barrage build is something like this:

barrage
distracting shot
savage shot
whirling defense
favorable winds
throw dirt
troll unguent
res

I pretty much just spam barrage, as it's cheap and recharges fast, I never have energy problems. If the target I am attacking tries to cast a long spell or skill, I hit them with an interrupt. If I start taking a lot of attacks, I will put up whirling. If I get hit with a warrior, or see several all attacking my monks, I will use throw dirt on them. There is no required skill chaining as there are with sins. But that's not to say there isn't any. A R/E using barrage could use a conjure spell, along with favorable winds to make all your arrows move faster and do a significant amount of extra damage. Also, Read the Wind, conjure spell, ignite or kindle arrows, and dual shot works great for massive damage.

ermmmm, ok

anyway...
a couple of things to touch on...
someone asked if the hornbow is shorter ranged than the short bow, no
it is the slowest, is more difficult to interrupt with, and slows your attacks

the flatbow sux (imho) for most applications unless you take FW or read the wind, or are at vary short range

a build i really like, is
distracting shot
poison arrow
kindle arrow (dont use ignite arrow unless you want to piss off your warrors and casters)
dual shot
penetrating attack
needling shot
troll
rez

start with poison arrow, use your prep, hit with dual shot and penetrating shot (I use a 20/20 hornbow at this point usually)

after about 4 or 5 shots squishie targets are usually near 50%, then i switch to a recurve, usually a vamp recurve, and start with needling shot, it will machine gun down a target in very short order. basically its a caster killer in PvE

RE: Help...I Know nothing about rangers.

Bows? I like flatbow for it's speed and range. its perfect for hitting those stationary targets at range.

Skill chaining? thats pretty much assassin exclusive...

if you wanted to do some degen you could do...

Poision Arrow(elite)+Hunter's Shot(causes bleeding on moving target)+conjure phantasam(mesmer, 5 degen)

that would degen the bejeebus out of someone, then follow up with pin down and perhaps some fun with kindle arrow(a preparation). apply poison could be added, then you could use broadhead arrow(elite) to daze them as well as degen.

You could also just go R/A and bring all dagger mastery assassin skills, just pump up your expertise and pop in whirling defense and troll unguent(or shadow's refuge if you prefer that still) a viable build probably more to your liking.

RE: Help...I Know nothing about rangers.

took me about 5 mins to work out what a sin was :S.

with my ranger i use a mixture of diff builds and for each build i have a diff bow, for example for a interupt build i use a recurve becuase of its faster shot time (low arcs) and for general use i use a flatbow or a longbow becuase i like the range on them for luring.

the guys above have provided you with all the info you will need including builds, all you need to do is test them and modify them to suit your style of playing, im sure that u'll find another proffession you can play and enjoy as much as sin :), i personally love to play all 7 of my characters in many different roles.

have fun playing ranger they are so versatile :)
