Here's looking at you.

I'm in the market for a new LCD monitor. I think I'm going for a 19" my question is Should I get the wide? or stay with the standard sizing? Whats are the pro & cons if there is any. Any input is appreciated.

RE: Here's looking at you.

I dont have much expertise on this but when I went to get my comp I was told to avoid flat panel monitors. Reasoning, something to do with graphics wouldnt come out as nicely as a regular style monitor. I find this hard to believe considering the thousands of TVs and monitors out today with flat panels and the picture looks beautiful.

On another point I was suggested to keep with flat screen. But I wouldnt think that Wide would hurt just probably take some getting used to. Now here whats you need, a 50" DLP HD Monitor, talk abut widescreen action. Hopefully someone else with more experience can give you some help.

RE: Here's looking at you.

I have a 21" widescreen on home computer and I hate it. I am very anal about little things like the fact it ether streaches everthing out or it puts these big black bars on eather side of my game. Don't get me wrong, it works great for movies and stuff like that but not my games.

That was true, but is outdated.

Thing is, the technology of LCD and TFT screens has developed very rapidly over the past time and they're no longer inferior to CRT screens at all anymore, to one exception: maximum resolutions for CRT monitors are generally a bit higher.

If you'd go for a TFT or LCD, there are two things you should keep in mind apart from looking at all the typical specifications also of importance to CRT monitors.

Firstly an anti-reflective screen (wiki link) is highly recommendable.
They hide under a varity of names as displayed in the "Trade names" list on the page linked above.
This is probably one of the best inventions for TFT LCDs lately; these screens may initially appear to reflect more rather than less but apart from the fact that the name "anti-reflective" doesn't refer to being anti-reflective as opposed to others, but it actually just refers to a new technology of making screens anti-reflective, you'll also get used to it in no-time.
More importantly, your mind may have to get used to the technology a bit, but your eyes don't - they benefit from it straight away. :-)

Secondly, do not be tempted to pay $200,- more just to get an LCD with a reaction time of 2ms, rather than 8ms or something.
For the vast majority of this planet's population any difference under 8ms is no longer noticable, up to 6ms maybe if you're one of the would be RL-superheroes but down to 4ms or 2ms there's no way the human eye is going to be able to notice any difference.

And, last but not least, the compatibility issue:
More and more people are getting widescreens, thus more and more game developers will find themselves forced to support this.
At this time, pretty much all the games that are of any value (read: not thrown on the market prematurely as a collector's package of bugs due to a rock solid deadline) already provide native widescreen support.
Many others allow widescreen to be configured through simple configuration (".ini") files used to store your preferences in - which is generally also legit.
It only still happens very rarely that games will require an actual widescreen patch developed by a third party and officially illegal - by far too rarely I'd say to vote off your flatscreen, but that's a choice for you to make.

As for the widescreen compatibility of existing games, you can check the widescreengamingforum.com Master Games List.
It not only indicates the type (native, ini, etc...) of widescreen support (if any) for virtually every game out there, but also the method (minus vertical, plus horizontal, etc...) - which is good knowledge.

Hope that helps. :-)

RE: Here's looking at you.

We have a 20" LCD widescreen monitor, but a friend has the same exact brand 20" LCD standard (square screen) model. We can't decide which one we like better. It is true that you have to have just the right resolution for the wide screen to look good at all. If you are particular, I would say you are safe with the non wide screen, but I love the LCD.

RE: Here's looking at you.

I would go with a LCD flat screen. Ive never really had a problem with the LCD ones except that they will start to die in 2 to 4 years. I would just protect it from exposure to the sun (through windows). I think that is how my first one went out but Im not sure.

While I was going back to school I noticed one big difference for me atleast: the college that I went to still used primarily CRT monitors but the thing is that when I would work on a computer that still used the CRT monitor my eyes would start to hurt in mayby a half hour and would stay hurting most of the day. But with a LCD monitor my eyes never start to hurt even after hours of staring at the LCD screen.

Its all your preference though for a standard to wide-screen monitor it would be if you watch a lot of wide screen movies or not.

Well my example might be on the extreme side. I do run mine through a 42 wide screen HD flat panel and i love it! I have a difficult time gaming on the smaller monitors now, eyes are getting bad and have to squint. heh heh. And "NO" im not trying to compensate for something........but i would recommend a wide screen.....

RE: Here's looking at you.

I have a 17 inch LCD and I love it, and I'm thinking of going up to a 19 inch soon. Nas has a CRT and it is true that she's got a little better resolution, but it's not all that much better looking and on the plus side I've got more desk space than she does as well, so all in all I'm a big fan of the LCD monitors.

Mine is "stock", (came with pc, no upgrades) and its an hp 19" flat screen. I love it, and my dad has a projector type thing that is 60" and u can hook up your pc to it, its awesome, but the picture is horrible. Like if its not projected to a white wall, its even worse.
