arg, my ap bio teacher assigned this incredibly complicated artical to study over, highlight, then summerise in plain english waht we read... im going effing insane.....
heres a paragrapgh so you know waht im dealing with:
transmembrane segments 3,5,7,8,11 contain many amino acids having hydroxyl (OH) and carbamido (CONH2) groups that can participate in hydrogen bonding with the many hydroxyll groups ion glucose. moreover, the transporter protien takes two shapes; one binds glucose on the extracellular side of the membrane; the other binds it on the intracellular side.
considerable experimentl evidence suggest that a glucose molecule enters the cell in four steps. first, it occupies the outword facing binding site. second, the complex of transporter and glucose changes conformation, so that the glucose now occupies the binding site facing into the cell. thrid the transporter releases the glucose into the cytoplasm of the cell. fourth the unocupied transporter changes to the conformation in with the binding site faces outward. this final step returns the transporter to its inital shape, enabling it to transport another molecule of glucose"
what have my eyes bigger tehn my brains gotten me into .....
btw im a sophmore in hs, taking a reshmen collage course.. so like,, yea,, way over my head... adn i cant drop it,....
anyone else udnerstand that completly?

*giggles*
I used to be quite good at Biology, my dead has a Doctorate in a field of biology. But I gave up learning it quite a long time ago, so sorry, no help here. Just a scramble of letters :P

A cell is covered and containted inside a thin layer of jelly-like stuff, which has holes in it that stuff can go through. At some of these holes, called #s 3, 5, 7, 8, and 11, there are several types of acids that can latch onto sugars. The holes and the groups of acids form "transporter proteins" that carry sugars into the cell. These proteins come in 2 shapes, one on the outer side of the cell, and one on the inside. These bring sugar into the cell in 4 steps: first, the outer-facing one catches a sugar molecule, then it turns so that the sugar is inside the cell, then it lets go of the sugar so that it's inside the part of the cell where it can be used, and finally it turns back around to be like it was before the first stage, where it can catch another sugar molecule.
Sounds simple enough to me.

Geez, what kind of high school do you go to? Where I went AP bio was a senior course, and I consider it one of the best high schools in the midwest, though that's just my opinion. Doesn't seem like a good idea to offer it to sophomores. At my school, you got the choice of AP bio or AP chem, and you entered them with a year of bio and chem already.

grade 9:investigating science( the basics)
grade 10: biology, lab bio(get to cuts tuff open), ap bio(amino acids, cells advanced collage things)
grade 11: chemestry, lab chamistry, ap chemistry
grade 12: physics, ap physics
thos are the science options we are offered, and necro, can i get ur permission to use some of your statement, cuz mine is wicked mest up
btw, my shcool is gardiner area high school, maine school administrative district 11

Yah Im a Junior taking AP Bio, but since someone answered already I will reserve my thoughts on it, but if you have any other bio questions you can pm me and ill try to help out, or just know that there are other people on the forum going through the same AP struggle as you!

Go ahead. I was just summarizing the paragraph in plain-English, so it's not like it's anything too major. Besides, I doubt your teacher looks at this site anyway :)

Organic Chemistry! I took that last year, loved it, but it certainly is a time commitment.
Oh, and about what necrorebel said, amino acids aren't acids, they are molecules, the simple building blocks of proteins. And really, unless you are way behind in the class or something, that paragraph shouldn't have been that tough. If you don't know what amino acids, hydrogen bonding, glucose, extra- and inter-cellular membranes, cytoplasm, and transporter proteins are, you are going to have a lot more trouble later on. I never took AP bio, went for AP chem, but a bunch of friends did, and they were studying all the time. It is almost 100% memorization of vocabulary.

Think of it almost like an security airlock.
Only certain things can get in (this case glucose) so it goes up to the airlock (the numbers) then enters (combines with binding) then sits in airlock until let out. The airlock closes and resets and the glucoes is in the cell. Necrorebel put it nicely in science terms I tried to compare it to something else. Good luck on your homework.

I hardly remember doing Biology at school, I think if I got my hands on a Bio text book today tho I'd still feel compelled to draw glasses on the sperm!
