| What is wrong with him? Seriously... |

Ok, this is a rant, so prepare yourselves...
What the hell is wrong with my dad? I can't understand why he does some of the things he does.
For instance, in honor of Halloween, I went to pop in one of my all time favorite movies today..."Monster Squad." I put in the tape that has it labeled and go to where it should be (he puts 3 movies on each tape - 6 hour tapes set to EP/SLP), and I see "Gone In 60 Seconds" instead. What the hell? He tapes over one of my favorite movies as a kid, one that's EXTREMELY hard to find these days, for a movie that's on TV every other week. And what really urks me is that we already had the movie on VHS (on the shelf on the wall) and I owned it on DVD too! He tapes over a movie that's not out on DVD and I've only seen anywhere going for well over $30. And what does he put on it? A movie which, don't get me wrong I it like a good deal, that you can find on DVD for 4 bucks!!!
He does this all the time! He also taped over one of my favorite magicians and card trick specialists, Ricky Jay. And what did he put over it? Disney's "Anastasia." COME ON!!! That HBO Special isn't even available bootlegged anywhere! I have to start stealing tapes from him to keep them from getting taped over. Thank God I grabbed the Steven Banks standup tape before he could get his hands on it.
Here's a short list of things of mine he's gotten rid of in the past few years:
*erased GI Joe the Movie - thankfully I found it on DVD before it went out of production (now running over $40 per copy)
*erased Transformers the Movie - still can't get another copy of that for a decent price since someone stole the VHS out of my dorm room (after I went out and got one after my dad erased it)
*erased Masterminds - another fav of mine a few years back. He liked it too, so I'm confused why he trashed it.
*sold my old Atari (not the new "games in console crap", the ORIGINAL)...for 10 bucks, no less.
*gave away the shirt I gave him for his birthday (yes, it fit and it was perfectly good)
*sold the Collector's set of Star Trek movies I gave him for Christmas
Like, if I could get those movies on DVD (or even tape) someplace, I wouldn't mind as much. Its like he's erasing my childhood memories. I know I'm overreacting a bit, but its still upsetting to me.
Anyways, that's my rant. Parents really p!$$ me off sometimes. Hell, I'm 23 and my dad still ticks me off on a daily basis.

Well as a 23 year old you should have 23 years of expierence which tell you that dads are hard to please, quid pro quo parents are hard to please. I think it is such an expectation, and practially a requirement for a parent to be like that, that they have no choice but to be annoying :P well i am sorry to hear that, I hope things do work out for you, I guess you cant always win :(

Ok... Those two things really, really go too far. If you give him something (I assume you bought it?) and he gives it away/sells it, I would SERIOUSLY discuss this with him or your mom!

Man that's harsh, i hated when my parents did something like that. I used to have a problem with my dad not listening to me but we talked and its gotten better since.
Have you tried talking to him about this, maybe he did it unintentionally and didn't even relieze(sp?) it.
On a lighter note the 20th Anniversary edtion of Transformers:The Movie came out on DVD today!!! Completely restored and it even has the line with the expletive in it, cursing robots how funny is that?

1) Aren't the tapes his? Isn't the equipment his? He may still see you as a kid and figure that what's his is his and you're just borrowing it. Therefore, if he needs a tape and it isn't something that he recorded, he can do what he wants with it. While this may not be the correct mentality, I can understand it.
2) Get a converter that plugs your VCR to the computer and make digital copies of everything you care about. That way, you can keep backups on CD and never worry about this again.
3) Stop buying him shirts and such and get him blank VHS tapes (since he obviously needs them) :)

I know what you mean by not pleasing parents. I tried going to college after high school, I really did, but just could not get into it. I mean my grades were decent (B average) but the more I progressed the less I liked it. I really had no idea what I wanted to do with my life, so I put college aside until I could decide what I wanted to do, rather than waste my parents time and money. I thought my mother would respect my decision at least, but she got pissed at me for it.
And now the latest thing is my moving out. Now this was her idea as she was tired of seeing my do nothing for half the day and go to my job at night. So she practically kicks me out and tells me to move in with my brother. At first I was reluctant, I was moving away from the comfort zone that was my room for twenty years, and getting something a bit smaller. It's been close to year and I find I like living like this, I have alot more freedom than what I had before, and my rent and bills are reletivily cheap (summer still sucks down the cash cuz of AC), and my roommates all do thier share of the chores. Now my mother is calling me asking to do stuff and even offered me if I wanted to move back in with her.
So yes Parents are nuts; you can't really please them, so I gave up trying that and just decided to be myself. If they don't like it, tough beans.

Ouch. Not everyone has a TV Drama family. My whole family loves each other (no drama). I even like my in-laws (wife's family) who like my family etc. I have kids and they like me too (course, they're 6 and under so there's lots of time...)

I feel for ya Vince, I hate loosing the things from my childhood that have meaning to me. Thats why I've started buying up the old movies that will never be out again and digitizing them to DVD for my own collection. Now I'm off to find a copy of Monster Squad, greatest movie ever!

Advice for ya Vince. Take all those things you want from your childhood and take them with you or box them up and put them in storage. My father and i clashed at about that time when i was that age. I think it was that he didnt accept the fact that i wasnt a kid any more (heck i was married with a kid of my own). But now 10+ years later were best friends. heh heh I also live about 1000 miles from him too.
Tank'ns my Bidness and Bidness is GOOD!

Awesome....just awesome.
It sucks that your dad did that, but to be helpful in showing you that there are other more unfortunate things, at least your dad didn't trash everything you owned and throw you out on your 18th b-day
