Just thought I'd post these for future lockpicking rogues.

although I'm not so sure about this:

I don't remember for sure off the top of my head, but I'm almost positive I've lockpicked from the "will not be traded" part of the trade window and still got a skill up. Perhaps it was a bug they fixed after that guide was written.

I would say it was something that was changed. You can get raises from things that are in the "will not be traded" box.

as an enchanter I know for a fact that, that is not true. You most certainly can raise your skill level through the will not be traded box...actually I'm fairly certain that it is the only reason for it...no one wants to lose there stuff through bad trades and scammers. The will not be traded box prevents just that.

I think what might have happened is someone may have not traded the modified item when wow first came out. Because if the item was never traded then it was never technically picked. But now it automatically trades with do not trade even if you do X out of the window so it no longer happens. That would be my best guess for this comment.
Anyway yeah your lockpicking will go up in Do not Trade modified items.
