alternatives to the factory?

There seems to be only one TDM server that is filled with good players 24/7 and that is the Factory. Yet, because it's full, it's frustrating to wait 1 or 2 rounds to get in. Is there an alrenative?

Re: alternatives to the factory?

Not really.

Atempts have been made but nothing kicked off. It's hard to make a server and kick it off like that.

Don't know the ip offhand but look for Viper's Den in Chicago. Everytime I've played there it was at or near capacity, has all the UTComp goodies, and good players too.

Re: alternatives to the factory?

viper's servers tend to be a little TOO full for me, and last time i was there it had a tendancy to end up with a dozen people on a 1on1 map =\

but it's pretty much the only other tdm place... there's a UR server that's set to FFA DM that often has some people, although it's not exactly a high skill level server...

i try to even avoid the factory nowadays, and stick to scrims and pugs on #pugged

{S!N} Purgatory is usually another good TDM server. Don't have the IP atm.

Also check out A!M's LIANDRI.COM Team Arena servers. That sh!t is fun - it's like LMS but with teams. Kill the other team off, win a point for the round. 1st team to 10 points wins.

Re: alternatives to the factory?

Sin's server is good. :)

We should set up a night or something we can all get together and TDM or CTF it up on a new server in an attempt to get it off of the ground and be a good server all the time. Start with one night a week, and be consistent with it, then move to two, etc etc. After a while it will/would be known as a good competitive server, and be populated a good deal of the time. :)

You'll actually find me playing on the ur^ server if I go pubbling. Why? Because it's the only server I don't get banned for cheating on because my brother is admin/leader of ur^. Plus Chicago servers = sex.

you've probably got level 35 top secret encrypted alias names that you use though, so i could be playing you all the time and wouldn't know it....

Re: alternatives to the factory?

I generall play under the following names (because I'm going through an identity crisis right now =[)

LL|Fb.Ender (my old clan name)
BG2|Kerreck (my new clan name)
WTFNDR (when I don't know who I am)

But I think for the most part I'm BG2|Kerreck now...but damnit I don't know...I've never left a clan before and while I really haven't left LL they don't do 2k4 anymore...ugh, I'm lost...so lost.

Re: alternatives to the factory?

ut2k4.bellinghamlan.com weeknights after 5 pm, and all day weekends (it's hosted locally at my LAN party in the PAC nw at a business on a t1 line hence the time schedule). All twl rules are there, with utcomp mapvote in place in order to change gametypes etc.

We have a pretty competitive group that hangs out on it pretty regularly, but it's also been privy to some noobs from the party, but they're not the bad kind of noobs - they're the ones that want to learn to get better. They just suck right now. ;)

You'll see folks like me, CiKashll, pdxPine, Maddeh, and a few pretty decent peeps from my new clan on there. Hell, the other night Saito dropped in for a bit but left suddenly. =/

Re: alternatives to the factory?

On our forums at www.bellinghamlan.com, if you are a member of the forums that is, on the front page is a status indicator of the server and who is playing. Just register over there and check it out to see if anyone is playing. Generally a couple of die hards looking to get better will jump on as soon as they see someone else is on the server, or they will idle on it till someone else shows up. :)

We will be playing, for sure though, on New Years Eve, and maybe the 28th. :)

Re: alternatives to the factory?

Meh rant on why some servers kick off, and why some don't (short version):

The first thing to do is make sure you don't have anything that's going to clear the server, and scare people off. IE a CBP2 map, these are famous for causing a stampede out the door. Maybe your clan has a fetish for some horrid map, doesn't matter, if you put it on there, and people see it odds are they aren't coming back. And mark my words, you will get some joker eventually that thinks DM in a bright pink box looks cool and that's it. Make sure you map list is short, and good.

The next thing is making it stable, and I mean for players. The only reason factory does so well is that odds are, at any time of the day you can get a game there. You could probably find a better game at another server (the factory isn't that skilled), but the factory is a simple choice and the easiest way to find a decent game. If you get a bunch of people with their clan tags on playing in your server, people are going to see it on buddies, and they will go there as well. Plus if the guys have a good time, they might just add the server to favs, which means if they hop online and see it, they will head right over.

If you can get a steady group of players that have tags on that people look for, and don't have a map that will make everybody run for the hills, you stand a good chance of having your server pick up.

Re: alternatives to the factory?

Ender- Cool...thanks man.

Saito- It's pretty sad players don't give good new maps a try. People rather pick maps like Grendalpoop or some 1on1 map when the server is at capacity It boggles me when people leave when maps like Akbal or Achilles are on; great flow, great weapon placement, great game. With that being said, one of the things that hurt this game was the lack of quality stock maps

BTW have any of you tried DM-Sudokan?

glad to see we're getting noticed ;-)

{S!N}Stik had done a lot of work over a couple month timeframe with server settings and found that a standard server setup provided the highest traffic. now that we have a good flow of regulars... perhaps it's time to add UT Comp? i'll bring it up. we would love to see the talent level increase a bit...

Re: alternatives to the factory?

I wish Epic would just whitelist UTComp, especially since there are filters available to filter out stuff that Joe Gamer doesn't want to see. =/

If you are going to put UTComp on, I would make an effort!to get the word out to people that play there, tell them to add it to their favs, etc., so that when UTComp gets turned on it won't disappear for them.

Yea, that's a big key. The main thing, though, is that people will play where there are people playing. :P Sounds simple, but it's really not. If you want people to play there, all the posting in the world won't make any difference if they look it up in their browser and no one is there.

However, if you make an effort to grab a few friends/clanmates, etc., on a nightly basis and jump in there to get things started, and keep that up for 2-3 weeks, you have a much greater chance of the server becoming a regular stomping ground for people.

Re: alternatives to the factory?

Indeed - but also we should be the ones trying to start stuff...ie if I'm online and can't get in to a full server, then I just jump in one and play around a bit. People almost always show up after a bit, it just takes some patience. If all of us here were doing this, it wouldn't be long before we had a few more servers to choose from.

I've got all you and your clans on my buddy list and I always check that first - even before favorites - so if your on and wanting to play, but can't get in whatever server, jump in an empty one and I'm on, I'll join you. We should all do this. twould be awesome. :)

Ender- I tried that very thing on the 28th when I went on the bellingham server. However, someone PW the server to try out some new maps or mods :/
Anywho...I see you're an admin for that server, I wonder if you can make it a TDM server for a trial run?

Saito- Good idea also. Is #pugged on ETG the only channel people looking for a game frequent? I hope so :) It would be nice if everyone went to the same place ;)

I'm getting discourage by the lack of TDM play here on the WEST side. Does anyone here like WEST side TDM :)

Re: alternatives to the factory?

It's not just #pugged, it's more than that. The scrimbot is on ETG, and the pugbot is on their as well. Plus since almost every TDM team is on ETG, it's the best place to find scrims/1v1's.

West coast kinda sucks TBH. The problem is that most of the players are eastcoast, and west can't play east servers, and vice versa. So if your on the west coast your going to end up needing to play on centeral servers most of the time.

And powerslave is west.
