im mzaking a new character, but i have no clue what to make. i want something that will be effective in ra and ab. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Every profession is equal and with RA and AB its the team not the individual (well same goes with the whole game) so personally I would make whatever profession I really felt like, also if it is going to be just for AB and RA (PvP) just make a PvP character and remake it whenever you want.
Warrior/Monk - Finished Chapter 1
Elemtalist/Monk - Finished Chapter 1
Monk/Mesmer - Finished Chapter 1
Ranger/Monk - Finished Chapter 1

Which campaigns do you have? Which professions are you experienced with?
Unfortunately I'm not a frequent ab or ra guy, so I couldn't help much, but I'm sure those 2 questions just may for others :)

im experianced with warriors mostly. id like to make a necro/warrior but i hear that never works. and hae prophecies and factions.

Necro/Warriors usually don't work very well because people attempt to play the character as a Warrior rather than a Necromancer. While meleemancers can be very powerful, they're also quite a bit trickier to play than most other types of character.
There's nothing wrong with making a N/W... Just don't try to melee with it unless you REALLY know what you're doing and have a skillset capable of making up for your lowered armor, whether it be with generous amounts of lifestealing or with Warrior blocking and armor increasing skills.
I always recommend that people play Monks as one of their first three characters so that they can learn how much wait time a monk usually needs after battle as well as how much bad pulling and overaggroing can stress a monk's healing abilities. Besides that, having to wait less than a minute for groups in difficult missions can make the game a lot of fun :)

I have played every single class, and I have to say, I would have a hard time picking a favorite. I deleted my sin, but that wasn't because I didn't enjoy playing it, I just didn't think they offered anything to PvE really. Anyway, if you are wanting to make a necro, I would say go for it. They are a great class, definitely in my top 10...Secondary isn't all that important, go with whatever you feel like, most often you will most likely be using all necro skills. Some of the more common builds however are N/Mo for MMing or N/Me for SSing, though I've heard SS doesn't work quite as well anymore. However, you most certainly don't have to go with one of those two, be creative and come up with something on your own, then you can share it with the rest of us!
Oh, and I would like to compliment Necrorebel. I saw him say a little while back that only 85 of his credit came from submissions, the rest was from the forums, and I know why. You are probably the single most helpful poster on this site, no offense to anyone else, but a huge compliment to necrorebel, because there are a lot of really helpful people around here.

Personally I like a monk in pvp because you don't see a lot of them and they will greatly help your team, especially in RA. I ran my monk in RA and went on about 3 or 4 streaks of over 10 wins just because the other teams couldn't get a monk. They are also useful KD smiters if you don't want to heal others. Eles are also excellent for AB because they can nuke and capture shrines solo if they want. Just adding my two cents.

I do agree that monks are great to have in RA, but I disagree that they are rare. A lot of people think the same as you, knowing that a good monk can make a team, however, they tend not to be good monks, though they do always expect to win. I can't tell you how many times I've had monks leave very early in a battle when things start going badly, or immediately after they die the first time. Also, there are a fair number of people that will leave at the very beginning if there is no monk, which is also annoying. I got my only string of 10 wins, and we went to 17, with no monk, so though they help a lot, you can still win without them. I don't really know where I'm going with this, monks are great characters to have, I think everyone should have one and know how to play it.

Oh, I agree, there are a lot of people out there who play monks either not very well or in an elitist fashion where they quit in a heartbeat if one thing doesn't go there way. And I haven't seen many monks in RA but I admit there are several in AB now that I think about this but I'm only speaking from my experience. And if you play a monk, practice with it and don't throw a fit just because something goes wrong, there is still a chance to turn things around if you don't whine and work to cover it up.

If you want something sure fire that will work in RA and AB you'd be loking at an RC prot or a B-lighter monk.
That way you can garuntee your team will always have a monk and a damned good one at that.
On the other hand if you like to have offensive power with a li'l bit of KD you could go for an aftershock hammer warrior
Devistating hammer, crushing blow, heavy blow, renewing smash, aftershock, berserker's stance, healing sig, and rez.
I love this build :D works well in RA and AB.
There's also a mesmer build I enjoy
Crippling anguish, conjure Phantasm, images of remorse, clumsiness, energy tap, drain enchantment, ether feats and rez.
Those are a couple of my fav builds you can try for fun. There are a ton of Ranger builds on wiki if you're interested too.

They can dish out huge amounts of damage and use pretty god shadow arts skills

I have played a monk, a ranger, warrior, assasin, elementalist, and a few other classes.
I liked the ranger and the warrior. But you can see me on my warrior. I like every profesion, exept the mesmer class.
But you just play what you like.

well if u hav all 3 gws then ud b ud b best with the assassin/duervish combo. they can dish huge amounts of dmge very fast.

Get Nightfall and make a Dervish or Paragorn.
They are the "new" additions, and are fun to mess around with.
if not, make a PvP character and just use your RPG one as your "main" account.

in my opinion a Mesmer is a awsome class to play, just in the fact you can do a varity of things with them. from tanking with illusionary weapondry builds to pulling anti caster (backfire and mass interupts) to anti melee (ineptitude and empathy) along with it, you can tap into your secondary pretty nicly like for example the necro, the Me/N is known for the narly soul barbs build and many others, hope this helped a little lol have fun exploring =D
