well, at first I thought this was a joke, but it's actually serious... after reading some of cswellas and kannas posts, it has all become clear to me.
We are not allowed to curse anymore.
Nothing at all. This includes the "nearly" innocent word that is a three-letter based one, and it describes your rear end.
Instead, we supposed to use the nice little word, kitten
"Oh my kitten God!"
This is not supposed to be negative, but I do really find it a bit illogical to censore those words... Seeing the game we play rated Teen and 12+, I dont understand why we then are supposed to be afraid of cursing. We are actually killing each other in the game, but hey, cursing is a whole other world, thats dangerous!
Of course, one should try to be modest, and only curse once in a while, but a permanent ban? Where did freedom of speech go?
As my grandpa once said (he was a sailor);
"If you take away cursing, you take away the spice of the life"
We should be allowed to curse, at least say some of the small words..

i think its more about curtousy(sp) and politness more than anything else,
but i get ure kitten point! ;)
tbh i think its kinda funny :) and i know swearing is a big thing in the world today (everyone does it and its getting less of a big deal) but sometimes people just try to keep things from going down the "kitten-er" and try to keep some sense of control over public documents. as it is impossible to restrict the audience of a website to 12+ or 15+ unlike the 18+ where u can confirm with a credit card lol..
so infact its just out of politeness to not offend other people.
................I think..... xD

I know what you mean, it's not to offend anyone but in some words i couldn't just see what's offending in it.
But i mean, kitten? I'd like to see a poll of the age of Gameamp's members instead of drastic measures such as one word of swearage=ban.

Its not being afraid of cursing. Please remember, Guild Wars and this community is viewed/played by all ages groups from 8 years to 50+. We must keep both places as clean as possible. People who are being monitored by their parents/guardians might see something they don't like, and next thing you know, we lose a valued member of both communities.
This whole "kitten" thing was started some time ago, I've always used it here and ingame as much as possible, to keep things clean and turn negatives into positives. And that was its original intent. I do hope you understand. :)

Wait...we get perma-banned for swearing now? (Just got my internet back after 3 months)
So they are going to ban us for swearing, and not actively use a language filter? Thats kitten retarded.

And, I would also like to point out, cursing doesn't have to be taken towards anyone, I for instance only use it when I want to emphasice my point, like:
"thats a kitten good idea. It really made me laugh my kitten off..."

hey somtimes its all you can say. like when u get a nice drop then error 7.. all that comes out of my mouth is a whole bunch of "kittens"
and yeah did u know cuz that kind of food is saturated it means even if u go exercise u still wont burn of that fat.... so basically u eat it and it starts killing u, then u eat more and more and it wont go away!

Both game and community. You can curse ingame, that is what filters are for, but I still think it is inappropriate, with how much it is used. I have my Trade and Local channels constently turned off now. And then there are those who actually go past the filters, which do earn a banning if one is handed to them. That is my opinion anyways.

I don't have problems with either one as I very rarely swear and I work with people that do a lot but I agree it has to do with the fact that people under the age of 12+ also visit the site. Oh side note did you know that McDonalds is healther than most sit-down resturants? The problem comes down more to the serving size and most sit-down places serve large amounts.
I'm neither here nor there but everywhere. I am who I am and nothing more but yet I'm nothing less than what I strive to be.

yeah the words themselves mean 100 different things and it depends on what context they are in... eg
if you say one thing to a friend then its recieved differently than if a stranger recieved it. eg you wouldnt walk up to a stranger and say "alright u kitter!" but i would say that to my friends as a laugh.

Yeah personally I swear like a m(*&(*&fo and don't see the harm, but they do have a point. As the game is rated 12+ there are still kids that check out the site and play the game that are <12. Is swearing going to hurt them....no but in reality you don't need a curse word to express yourself, just a dictionary. These are the site rules so I will follow them, as they are not asking anything that truly restricts my ability to express myself
Onto a small some what relevant rant - in this Politically correct regulated, I dont want to offend anyone, society we live in you never know who will be offended by something you say. People will sue or protest anything THEY find mildly offensive because instead of not reading, listneing, or watching the offending material they must have it removed so no other person can enjoy it. You see it all the time on TV, in magazines, and in the news. So and So found the word &*^&% to be offensive, racist, or have possible sexual conotations so it has been banned in.....name of town, school library TV station etc.....
We have become a society of censorship for the minority so that the majority can no longer express themselves without fear of offending 1 person. We have also become a society that does not learn from failures but renames them so that you FEEL better. I for one have learned from my failures and shortcoming as Iprogressed in life
Here are some funny examples from te US of how we are coddling our youth.
Tag is illeagal in some schools because:
1. It could be physically harmful for the children
2. Some people are continually made it and feel like ther are being left out/picked on. (well I was it quite a bit and I turned out fine)
Teachers in some schools don't give students a failing grade but instead give them a delayed success, as parents were afraid their children could cope with failure.
I can kep going but most people stopped reading by now.
I would like to say I have had a point but I didn't really, just kind of started typing; but, Using kitten instead of a curse word is just another way of sugarcoating life for the young ones out there.

this is stupid. i myself work in a school and my mother and sister work in nursury schools. and i have heard lots of things like this..
for example piglet from winnie the pooh was banned in my moms nursury cuz the pig is a symbol in another religion and not appropraite for class room. (its a cartoon does it really bother people that?)
personally i have nothing against anyone, as long as they dnt try to interfere with me..
the other one is the nusury rhyme "bar bar black sheep" which i used to sing when in nursury is now Inoppropriate to use it.
i think somtimes things are just taken to far and to extremes,
it does make me wonder wth is going on with the world somtimes when i hear stuff like this.. i mean omg... there are more pressing problems in the world other than "is bar bar black sheep offensive to some of the kids?"

OMG!!!
Ok... I'm all up for trying to keep things friendly in life, and in GW, and in here... so I'm OK with the site-rules considering cursing. Same goes for respect...
But I do think we (as humans) are taking things too far sometimes! Take the above piglet thingy... thats really taking it too far!
Its OK to respect other ppls religion... but plz let them respect mine then too (since I have none... plz respect that too).
So plz don't try to get me into something I don't believe in... I'm not trying to get you out of something you believe in...

Personally I love this site. Basically it points out all the stupid things we are doing in society to be politically correct. It is a little right wing biased but it never fails to get my blood boiling every morning with some new ridiculous ACLU lawsuit. Enjoy it if you visit,

Well said.
Although im guessing a majority of people here arent offended by profanity there are those around that are (me bing one of them, I find vulgar language inappropriate). All this does is make people think twice before posting, its not like in real life where words can just slip out of your mouth, you actually have type out your sentences and hit reply. Im sure everyone can get their point across without swearing.

I am in the same boat; I curse more often than necessary. However, there's a time and place for certain things and unfortunately, people think that the Internet is no-holds-barred (not the Hulk Hogan movie, either.) But, in the "free" society we live in, for every 1 person who respects their rights and the rights of our society, there's 20,000 who take advantage of it. It's reeeaaalllyyy *kitten* sad.
I don't believe I've ever used a curse word on this site and have used "kitten" in place of whatever expletive (sorry if it turns out I did....my memory isn't what it used to be); it's just respectful. The sad truth is, in school for those that are 12-15, they hear sooooo much and it wouldn't be any different hearing it here than what they hear when they're in the "educational process."
BUT, there's a big difference between our community here at Amp and "normal" society....here at Amp, we ARE respectful to all. Sure, there's some dissenters (there always is) but we have a staff and admin that do care and do get rid of any malignant moles on the chin of our community. Period. And thank *insert chosen deity here*!!!
And, also, I disagree that cursing makes one to appear to be uneducated; take it from someone who IS educated (old school style, considering the public education system is a joke nowadays) and does curse.......one's own immaturity and disrespect, etc. leaves others to bow and shake their heads in shame and disgust.

To stick with the topic at hand and not go off on some tangent about political correctness....
Some people find swearing inappropriate, in closed circles I swear a ridiculous amount but thats only with people I know won't be offended by it, whenever I am around people I don't know I refrain from language that may be deemed unsuitable. It is all about respect.
None of you know all of the members of this site in person or well enough to know they wouldnt find swearing offensive, considering the amount of hits we get it would be impossible to even pretend to speak for the majority. As we all know we have a great community that respects each other and part of that is recognising the diversity of social and cultural backgrounds, those backgrounds won't have the same rules of social etiquette as you or I. Refraining from swearing is realy simple, it's not hard to formulate a sentence, even in anger, without using profanity, if it is then simply don't type it.
No one has been banned for one occurence of swearing on this site and I doubt that would happen, as you know in the first instance we edit it out of your post and say why we have done so, if you continue and are blatently disrespecting our few simple rules then yes a ban may be in order, one swear and your gone? no that wouldnt be the only reason to warrent a ban.
It really is simple to keep it clean, I don't see what the fuss is about ? :=)

I just wanted to point out the cussing thing isn't new. When you register to the site you agreed to the Rules. Those are:

I agree on most except the generalizations. Not all of the public school systems are a joke. There are a lot of private and home schooled kids that don't get taught some basic material that could be very useful in life. Although part of the fault falls on the teacher the biggest part of a child not learning falls on their parents. Which is why more and more schools are being looked at as a joke cause the parents want it to be more of a daycare than a place of learning. Those things spoke of being banned or removed from schools haven't happened here. They still have The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and so on here. I can see people's concern with things of this sort.
As far as the swearing its just as easy to use other words like crap (same amount of letters and can be used to bring forth all the same meanings as its swear brother).
I'm neither here nor there but everywhere. I am who I am and nothing more but yet I'm nothing less than what I strive to be.

My personal belief is that swearing shouldn't be considered a 'sin'. Taking god's name in vain is only actually using the word 'god' in a swear. Or using his name for selfish reasons.
Televangelists use god's name in vain. They use his name in order to gain money.
Culture has demonized certain words simply because that's how culture is. There have always been "forbidden" words.
But despite my belief, swearing is still considered wrong. I swear myself sometimes, but never in the presence of kids. Or in front of anyone who would be offended.

Personally, I'm 15, I've been hearing curse words for some time now, and I've actually (for no reason what so ever) come to define curse words this way: "Cursing is a way of putting out your oppinion stronger than without the cursing."
As it has been stated already, cursing can be both good and evil.
I personally enjoy to curse. I think it's excellent for speaking up, or when you just wanna make your point so much more clearer. The first couple of days with "kitten" was lol-like... Now it's just dull.
Also, in this world of typing (GA), cursing isn't the real problem, it's how people use Caps Lock and how they control their "!"s. The people who can't do this, are usually defined as flamers in here...
I absolutely think that some words are inappropiate for a place like GA, mainly words that refer to a specific population group (racism, homosexuality etc.), and I never use words like that with people whom I don't know, or people who don't accept them (my friends and I call eachother alot of different things. We only use them where they cause no harm)

Had to edit one of my post but just in case there is confusion let me clarify - I am perfectly fine with the ban of curse words here at gameamp, there is no need to use curse words to express your opinion. I do sometimes just because it is easier and gets your point accross very quickly; but, but remember there is a time and place for these words, here is not one of them. If I have used foul language on the site then oops i'll be more carefull. Most forums, including gameamp, try to keep the discussion at a level that is clean so all ages can visit whether or not they have the game. I have no issues with that.
Also sorry if I hijacked the topic a little on the PC stuff but it was something I thought was kind of funny yet still related to the topic as we were discussing objectionable language.

back to answering some stuff...
Well, of course we signed the "we-wont-speak-evil" part (see the Jenis post for a perfect quote there), but as far as I understand it, you are not allowed to curse to another person. I think the sort of "selfcursing" should be allowed...
oh, and I also wonder;
Small children look away NOW!!!
is dammit counted as cursing?

LOL, just wanted to comment on this.
If you were the little kid, what would the phrase, "Look Away Now!" do?
It would make me curious and want to see what's next.
