Can they make my face any better?

Currently we have in most MMO's;

Hair,
Eyes, Eye Color, Eye shape, Eye Brow(Uni-brow, sorry, Austin Powers flashback)
Cheeks and Cheek bones(never any real depth here)
Ears, Nose
Mouth
Jaw and Chin.
Height, Girth and skin tone.

I have thought about this and an answer is hard to come by.

To further the options for variety, we have seen tattoos, scars and facial adornment
and I feel that this is needed, for variety's sake.

We have seen these implemented in the past along with a certain seasoning
which includes adjusting the size of arms and legs, the buff to skinny look.
I believe Ryzom offers this but to a degree that it can lead to mis proportioned
characters. COH, at least kept the adjustments within a palatable taste(talk about getting buff)

I also understand there has to be some limitations. EQII beta there was a lot of talk
concerning the fear of making a gnome look like a Dwarf, so I do understand Race restrictions.

If we picture a Dwarf in our minds eye, our basic description may be, Short, stout,
bulbous nose, chunky cheeks and a mass of hair. Diet this fatty and cut his hair,
we then have a hefty Gnome. So there has to be some subtle changes that can be made
within the Dwarfs racial characteristics.

Besides adding dimensions of the facial extremities, nose, ears, etc, etc, with restrictions,
what about skin texture? I have seen the screen shots and they look wonderful, I am just not sure
that skin texture is a viable option. In that case this is moot. For the sake of discussion though, I think
age lines, crows feet around the eyes, might add to that subtle difference.

Of course this brings us back to the above list. I think there may be no more options than
what we already have. I remember something with VG, about the option to adjust the size of hands and feet, I may be wrong so please don't quote me on this. I am not sure if that will really help us look unique(My wife does look at the size of mens hand and feet though, not sure why).

When I look back at all the characters I have made, I realize that I always started bald. I would set my facial characteristics first and save the hair for last. It was amazing to me just how much a good head of hair changed the look of my character. What little we have seen with character creation in Vanguard, they seem to have taken it to the next step. If I was going to think of anything to add to our “distinctiveness” it would be our personality. After all it's you behind the toon that makes it unique.

Otherwise, take the random option at the character creation screen and get a good head of hair.

RE: Can they make my face any better?

I think as far as the shape of a face goes, they have gone far enough. Nowadays it is not often that you have the feeling you are seeing your twin sister. But I still have the feeling there are a lot of look-a-likes. This is mostly caused by outfits, accessories and hairdo.

I know of only one game that actually had a hairdresser you could visit. And that was a tennis game. I wish I could really go to a hairdresser and just change my hairstyle. And although it might be realistic that if I decided to cut it all off, I will have to wait a month or so for a ponytail, maybe it would be best if the stylist has some magic abilities.

And then outfits. The problem with loot based games is that your outfit is based on your loot. Which makes it automatic hard to distinquish yourself. There are only so many flavours of chainmail. And since helmets are usually a wise idea as well, the whole gang looks the same. I am not sure how this can be avoided.

I think I read somewhere that the tailor could make her own designs. That would be fantastic! If they really go full scale with this, I will be shopping from tailor to tailor to try out their creations. Or even better, I will be the first haute couteur chainmail merchant of Qalia. But now I am probably dreaming...

And while I am typing, let me complain about accessories as well. Rings, bracelets and earrings should not be invisible. And earrings should definately not be part of your hairdo. Of course here is again the problem of fashion versus functionality, but that gives the jeweler something to do too. I am sure most players will do the extra quest to get the right gems for the ring of his dreams. Or the the right gems for the girl of his dreams.

They say the character creator will be better than anything that has come before, including CoH. Everyone views there toon different. Some see it as a avatar that they control. Looking down on the action like a god. Others, fall completely into the game and become the character. I myself, become the character. That's why I have trouble playing different races. In CoH my scrapper Cillion looked exactly like me. I was able to make him my height and weight. He had my nose and haircut. No doubt that in Vanguard when you guys see Cillion walking around, you will know exactly what I look like in real life. They've done a great job on everything else we've seen so far. I'm sure they will do a great job on this too.

I went straight to your profile page to check out your game handles. But unfortunately you don't have them there :) But how do you deal with alts? I become my character too. But they are not me. The escape to a different world/identity is what makes me so hooked on my characters.

I have a few regular alt names that I always use. They are always different versions of me. Khalma is always an older version of me (usually a magic user), Ramier is always the darker one(rogue/assassin), and Maleth is bigger and bader (warrior type). They are all just the different extremes of me that I play depending on the mood I'm in at the time.

RE: Can they make my face any better?

In EQ2 as part of a live event they had a barber in one of the towns that you could visit and get a semi customer facial hair or hair style applied but I never got around to trying it before the event ended. Another thing they did was added an alternate appearance system that allowed for more Far Eastern looks that you could applied as a 1 time permanent change to your characters as part of one of the Game Updates. Vanguard seems to be doing everything right and I am hoping they do not give into the pressure to release it before it is truly ready. I think we all seem to agree that it is a bit of a let down when you see someone in game that looks like your characters clone.
The SouthPark episode "Make Love not Warcraft" had a bit that illustrated that whole situation in a cleverly subtle way. Finally the character creation in the 1st Dungeon Siege game was really nice eh.
Ok slighly off topic but I am betting I am not the only one that thinks some of these games over do it when it comes to male musculature and the female gender bits as well as some weaponry in order to provide a bit of flash but does anyone else prefer a more inline realistic scale?
