Anybody knows some Latin?

Hi Ampers,

I need your help.

Among other things, I am the site admin of GameAmp's Gods & Heroes site. I have a ton of material I want to add to our site there. I am planning to do that in a sort of episodic documentary. Since the game is set in Roman times I thought it is only fitting to give it a Latin name. But my Latin is worse than rusty. Thanks to Google I came up with Viaticus Solum, which I hope means 'Journey through the country'. But maybe I am completely wrong.

But as I have seen many times before, the GW members seem to know everything. Is there anybody that could confirm to me if my Latin makes any sense?

Thanks,

Phedre

Yeah, that is the site I used. From the bit knowledge I have of Latin I know that it has all kind different forms to their words. Especially in relation to other words. It is basically impossible to do a word by word translation. But thanks for responding!

RE: Anybody knows some Latin?

Well, I haven't taken latin in a few years, but I have a few latin dictionaries sitting around. First off, your words don't agree. I couldn't find Viaticus, but Viaticum means provisions for a journey, not a journey. And solum means alone or sole, so that means sole provision for a journey. Journey is actually Iter, and through the country could be several things. One of them I'm pretty sure would be 'rem' but it's an irregular word when used to mean 'through the country.' Rem means countryside, like opposed to the city. It could also be 'per terram' or 'per regionem.' So, to sum up:

Iter rurem: Journey through the countryside
Iter per terram: Journey through the Country, or land
Iter per regionem: Journey through the country, or region

Hope that helps!

Edit: Whoops, I declined rus, ruris wrong! I did res, rei instead, I have corrected it, thanks for the person who pointed it out.

^^ I'm taking Latin right now, and the second or third one he said would probably be right, but the first one means journey through the thing, matter,or situtation.

Thanks for all the input. I have changed it to 'Iter per mundus' since it will be more than a journey through land or region. I have renewed admiration for the people that study this language, but I also feel great happiness in the fact I did not.

Just more proof that Phedre rocks and is a totally dedicated admin. :) Also sprinkled a bit of credibility for those kind hearted folk that contributed to your "quest" for knowledge. Have I mentioned I love GameAmp yet this week.

In that case, it would actually be 'Iter Per Mundum,' not mundus, since per takes the accusative form of nouns. Mundus is nominative.

Wow! I'm impressed by the knowledge in this community. Languages are not my strong point. Well done on giving an answer!
