Well between the topic over in the City of Hero's section and seeing some early bits from the Dungeion Siege movie I had to ask. What do you all think were the best and worst game to feature film conversion.
For best I would say a tie Between Final Fantasy the Spirit within and first Resident Evil movie.
My worst list is headed up with another tie between Bloodrayne and the Dungeons and Dragons movie.
Ok lets see what comes to mind for the rest of you.

I couldn't think of any good one. I kind of liked the Final Fantasy movie. But mostly because I was amazed by the graphics. I can't even really remember the story.
On the bad side there are plenty. But I think Mario & Luigi take the top spot. I can't even remember the official title, but it was bad!

Ok bad form :-P but dragging this one out of the dust...
Loved the Final Fantasy movie. Have seen the *cough* Dungeons and Dragons movie *cough* and the second one *gets the white jacket out* even worse...
although... not quite a game to film conversion... but the new Transformers movie was, I think, pretty entertaining. I'd like to see more of them.

The Good:
Tomb Raider: Angelina Jolie in short-shorts, and skin-tight tank-tops, while shooting guns!
Final Fantasy: I never played the games, nor know anything about them, so I can't say how well it transitioned. Good movie though.
Resident Evil: In one word... Milla!
Mortal Kombat: With the exception of a French guy playing a Chinese god, it was pretty good.
Doom: I'm probably alone on this one, but it wasn't that bad. The strayed from the actual game storyline, but the movie itself as ok.
The Bad:
Tron: Showing my age here... the first is certainly not the best. It may have been state-of-the-art then, but... oh my! What were people thinking?
Dungeons and Dragons: So much potential, so disappointing. But, I still thought it was fairly entertaining.
Super Mario Bros.: Dennis Hopper as King Koopa?! *rolls eyes*
Mortal Kombat: Annihilation: They should have stopped at the first one.
The Ugly:
Bloodrayne: I can't believe I watched the whole thing.
Alone in the Dark: Tara Reid is supposed to be some kind of smart scientist??!
Wing Commander: Oh my, was this bad.
Street Fighter: Horrible, but we all watched it to the end, didn't we?

Great lists. Now to the future, I hate to cut this one of at the knee's so early but I think that Hitman movie might end up being a dog. On the other hand I have very high hopes for the Dungeon Siege movie. Oh man and revisting Dread's comments Wing Commander sure was a heart breaker; that is one of my all time favorite games and that movie could have been awesome but instead turned into a bad teen flick.

One of my favorite movies of all time is Resident evil and Tomb Raider, those have to be my pick for best, though I cant decide they were both AWESOME! I love both leading ladies and think they are great in the roles.
Worst is DEFINATELY wing commander, my fiance has the game and I played it, not a bad game. But the movie was god aweful, my fiance left the room when I watched it cause he had seen it before and it was so bad. LMAO. I told him to suck it up but meh.
Upcoming movies - WoW the Movie, going to suck? Lets see they are trying to incorerate brave heart and 300...it could turn out corny or awesome ***scrunches face***

I really never understood how going from an active and interactive form of entertainment like a game to something as passive and uninvolved as a movie and not suck. :-)
I mean, in games, you, the 'I' are the main protagonist. Going from movie to game? Yes, From game to movie? Not without violating the essence of the game imo.
I like(d) Tron, which was more of an ode to a (then) new genre of entertainment and because it opened the door to computer graphics in movies, while using less than 5 minutes of CG footage themselves... It hasn't aged well for folks who weren't there at the time I think.
So, Best: Tron. Worst: Everything else?
Thing is, I played or watched people play most of the games mentioned so far. Who likes the movies made of the games they like(d)?
MMORPG (Roleplaying): Mostly Men Online Role-Playing Girls
MMORPG (Acheivement): Miserable Malcontents Online Rehashing Past Glories
MMORPG (PvP): Macho Men Obviously Really Prefer Griefing
MMORPG (itemization): Misers May Obfuscate Recently Purchased Gold
MMORPG (Social): Virtual Worlds with Virtual Wealth and achievements, but with Real People with Real Feelings.

Played tomb raider and resident evil from the begining, my brother was a huge console gamer when i was little and we played together or I watched him play for hours. I liked the movies. But I do see your point of view. I just think they were well made movies.

Well, I blame one person for the overall suckyness of game movies: Uwe Boll. He just fails at making good game based movies. <.<

As a European, I feel I have to give an explanation for the existence of Uwe.
It's like this. He's our George Bush, we just derailed him from doing real harm into making crappy movies ;-)
I think I saw Alone in the Dark actually. Made me appreciate Resident Evil. And I loathe Horror movies in general, really. Except for Alien. Resident Evil was done well, for its genre I think. So I would have to agree with Dru there. Never played the title though. Dinna like Horror. I did play most of the Tombraider series and never felt an ounce of interest for the movie(s).
I just remembered. Wasn't there a DOA movie coming out this year?

Oh boy and since Beowulf is having a game released at the same time it is being released I could not resist the temptation to take a stab it that one. I noticed in the add the main character is yelling "I am Beowulf" in the same way Leonitus yells "This is Sparta" and even though shot seems framed in the same manner. This mighty tip us off that movie might have great special effects it might also end up being a bomb. Well, we will no one way or another very soon.

Beowulf...
That tale could spark a discussion like this for best rendition thereof in a movie.
Best: Thirteenth Warrior.
Worst: The one with Christopher Lambert in it.

I've seen a few clips and trailer of Beowulf, and it does look good.
It's got HUGE star power in it... Anthony Hopkins, Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, Robin Wright-Penn.
And the CGI actually looks good. I dunno if I'll go to a theater and see it, but it's a definite OnDemand purchance went it comes out.
And if anyone has Comcast OnDemand, there are some nice clips in the Cutting Edge section, under G$ - Game Invasion. It has things on the game too.

The first movie I saw that had John Malkovich in it, was that movie called "Being John Malkovich". That's why I've never been able to take him seriously. :P

That is the funniest explanation of Uwe Ball I have heard in my entire life! I was always under the impression people liked him and respected him and such. Doesnt he even have an award or soemthing in his name for best movie? LoL
And don't forget Hitman the movie comes out soon...totally based on the game, and what content can that have besides shoot shoot shoot blood guts shoot shoot shoot more shooting....

Honestly, the only person I know personally who'll own up to liking Uwe's movies is my 14 year old nephew. Mind you this is the same nephew who, when asked to pick a movie chose 300 over Dream Girls because, I quote "Dream Girls is gay" so I tend to not go with his recommendations if you know what I mean.
Uwe win an award? Maybe the Darwin award.
Or you may be referring to G-Phoria's Deserving of an Uwe Boll movie award, which effectively means the people at the show think the game sucks bigtime.

Ahh yes it was G-phoria I was thinking of. I knew I heard his name and award somewhere!
And well at 14, if he didnt think Dream Girls was gay it would be stange haha.

Aww man and I was dogging Hitman and Beowolf and both may turn out to be good after all. I found out the guy who is playing the main in Hitman is the same actor that plays the character Seth Bullock in Deadwood. I will public admit to having high hopes for Dungeon Siege as well.

To lend a phrase from my favorite Sci-Fi franchise I wish they'd make a movie off:
Hope, is the first step towards disappointment.
Still, it'd be a nice surprise if Dungeon Siege would actually do well. Lets be nice and say, be better than Eragon. That doesn't set the bar too high :-)
