| What Genre do You Want to See in MMORPGs? |
|
|
|
Howdy yall,
Got another poll question thinger for ya today. What I want to know is ...
What genre would you like to see be made into an MMORPG. I am going to disallow "Fantasy" and "Futuristic" as answers, since there are many of both on the market right now. I want to know what unique, un-represented or poorly represented genre you would like to play in an MMORPG fashion.
As I did yesterday, I'll compile a list of all the answers and let you know what you, the listeners, pick as your most desired MMORPG genre :)

Ummm, fantasy, futuristic, and superhero
I cant think of any other genres that could work, besides an online GTA type thing. But i may just be narrow minded :p

Something I've mentioned before in IRC:
I want to make an MMORPG in which the players roleplay as employees of a fictitious game software company that makes an MMORPG. Your character would have one of a number of particular jobs within the company that would involve interacting with the players of the fictitious game (mind you these are not real people but NPCs), the press, the servers, the money, the lawyers, as well as the other employees (who are real people playing the game with you). You'd be able to enter the game-within-the-game as a GM to put the smackdown on hackers and exploiters, or participate in the forums as a community rep to placate the whiners, nerfherders, and I-quitters.
Nah. Seems too much like real life. Where's the fun in that?

How about one in the Command & Conquer universe. You could choose between different servers hosing the GDI vs NOD, Allies vs Russia, or the US-China-GLA ffa of Generals. Hmmm ... ok I admit this has potential to suck, but it could be interesting.
A game in the Wheel of Time world would be interesting as well ... just another fantasy mmorpg though.

Although it's "futuristic", the game I've always wanted to see made into an MMO is a a spaceship game. Each server is a spaceship, and all the ships are flying around the same universe. Players are new crew members on the ship they choose, and most of the action would be noncombat; maintenance (find x and interact to repair, collect crops in hydroponics lab, etc.), helping noncrew members (find a lost pet, collect groceries, etc.) and other "duties". Not only would there be level advancement, but rank advancement as well; once you hit a certain level you can take a test (in game lore and action [field test]) to advance a rank, but when you advance you drop back to level 1, but with improved advancement. The highest ranked players would be officers. After a certain point, the highest ranks (Captain, Commander, Chiefs of Departments) would be held by GMs at first, and awarded to the players who perform best in game and "distinguish" themselves the most. Ships could meet each other and trade or fight; there would be a couple of factions in the galaxy, and each would have a different relationship with other factions (friendly, cautious, kill on sight). Events in game could include "war" being declared between two factions, making them hostile, meeting of new races, etc. Most of the action would be noncombat, but there would be a few parts of the ship that would be combat based; maybe ventilation shafts and parks, definitely VR tech (holodeck!). Ship to Ship combat would include players arming, aiming, and firing weapons, repairs, etc.; every time a player completed a "battle quest" during the fighting, it would aid that ships total points or take from enemy points, and at the end of a set period of time, whoever had the most points would be the winner of the fight. After a fight, players would repair damage. Other cool stuff could include walking on the outside of the ship (combat potential; you meet hazards like aliens and stuff that can live in space). Other events would include enemies boarding, in which case the players would need combat abilities to repel the invaders. Finally, the ships would move around on a "master server" which tracks each of their locations and manages ship to ship combat, and depending on where they moved they could meet different planets or even go to nebulas and stuff.
Well, that's what I want to play.

Wartime MMORPG.
You live the life of a grunt of a perpetual war within the grand land. Your quests consist of missions from partiicpaiting in massive assualts.
Guilds would be "units" that you would be affiliated with.
In the beggining of the game you're grunt within the trenches. You move up through the levels up to eventually General. Taking on everything from gunman to a tank driver to where eventually you could be the man ordering newbies.
Yes that's correct, once you're a general you will be given a host of newbies to train command, or even lead into battle personally.
Weapons:
Primarly guns, however you can become a freak with knives, explosives, old weapons, hell rocks even.
The war style would be of WW1.
Levels are perhaps the most interesting part of this since the more an area fights the more war ravaged it looks.
If a town has been assualted everyday it will look like total ruins. Grenades would leave marks that eventually go away but they tend to stay for a long time.
Another option is that you can choose to defect throughout the game, however there will be a reputation marker, people who are known to be frequent ship jumpers will be less likely to be able to lead armies of troops as a man who slew 10,000 newbies with a swiss army knife.
Of course this game would have massive PVP. And yes, mass jumpings are encouraged since it's generally smart to ambush an enemy from multiple sides.
ANother feature would be real time damage problems.
If your man/woman gets thier arm ran over by a tank you can use that arm till you find a field surgeon or get to a base.
If you get hit by a shell and a leg is blown off you will need to find a way to get off the field before you die of your injury.
I can go more into it if ye wish.

In regards to Raterogue's comment, there is a Star Trek MMORPG coming out. And from everything I've heard, it's going to be insane-good. Or...at least for Trek fans.
http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/gaming/index.html
There's a big forum there. And from it looks like, you'll able to customize, make your own ship, be an officer, engineer, medical, operations....all the positions in Star Trek. And it's gonna be mission based I think. But HOW FUN WOULD THAT BE?? To take command of your own ship full of your own friends, each with a different job to do? Has potential I'd say....

DUNE.. it is perfectly ripe for an MMO... with all the House Intrigue and different unique professions and races

Tactical Modern RPG
And think Modern warfare, but in a simulated world.
Kinda like Battlefield 19something (never played it much)
But make the distances HUGE and the teams something you have to build from scratch, making it a more versatile team.
(You cant go out on missions until trained enough)
Could play something like team trainer, team leader, assault speciallist, Demolitions, communication speciallist (so me!)
Maybe slow down the time quite alot. making it more easy to plan missions depending on the daytime/weather.
(Maybe even have it real time)
Now a game like this can get boring really fast, so you'll have to figure out some way to make it action packed (if thats what your after)
Or maybe make somekind of crafting system that would involve logistics or stuff like that...
Havent tought thru the idea much apart from discusing it with one of the Guards at work..but would appresiate feedback.

Fate's idea sounds like a Harvest Moon mmorpg, i like Harvest Moon. GTA would be cool too. never read the Dark Tower series and haven't seen or read Dune. But i'd like to see StarCraft go mmorpg. I'd deffenatly be either a ghost or Zerg. For the Swarm!!!

Hmm..lesse..as I was digging through my DVD's I found my Buffy box set, and thought "Hmmm...wouldn't a Buffy MMORPG be cool?" I kinda like the sound of it...You could have good and bad sides too. The good guys would be Slayers (melee) Witches (ranged) and Watchers (Buff/heal) and reformed vampires. The baddies could be Vampires, Monsters, Werewolves etc. There could also be a very strong PvP element and quests like "Recover this" and "Save that" I want a Buffy MMO now :D

A "Hip-Hop MMORPG"? Well, if DJ Pooh is working on it, that'll be interesting (since GTA:SA was hands-down the Game of the Year).
I wonder how that'd work though.
