Prisoners of War

Here is something for everyone to try figure out.

Right there is 4 prisoners of war.

1 person with one leg, 1 person with broken ankle, 1 person who smokes and 1 super fit person.

There is 1 Torch

The bridge that they plan to get accross in their escape blows up in 19 Minutes and only 2 people can cross it at the same time.

The man with one leg takes 8 minutes to cross the bridge, the man with a broken ankle takes 6 minute to cross, the man who smokes takes 3 minutes to cross and the super fit guy takes 2 minutes.

Only 2 People can cross at once and 1 person must take the torch back to help the others across.

See if you can get them all across the bridge before the bridge blows up.

example of what to do.

Lets say the smoker and super sit guy cross first.
They take 3 minutes to cross because the smoker slows the superfit guy down.
They super fit guy then runs back across to get the others,
Thats been 5 minutes in total.
Then if the super fit guy takes the guy with one leg back it takes 8 minutes for them to cross.(total time so far is 13 minutes)
The super fit guy then runs back across to get the man with a broken ankle which takes him 2 minutes to get to.
Total time 15 minutes.
They both travel across again and it takes 6 minutes cos they are slowed down.

Total time 21 Minutes = over 19 Minutes which means Boooooommmmm Bridge has exploded.

  • The smoker and the fit guy cross (+3)
  • The fit guy travels back (+2)
  • He passes the torch to the Leg and the ankle guy, they cross (+8)
  • The Smoker takes the torch off them and runs back (+3)
  • The smoker and the fit guy run back (+3)

Correct?

RE: Prisoners of War

The smoker takes the torch to light 4 cigarettes, due to the high amount of fluor in the brand of cigarettes he smokes they light up the place,they form a square position to fend off the animals, the one legged guy uses the now unnecessairy torch as a cruch lowering his time to cross to 6 minutes, he and the ankle dude cross first, then the two other moonwalk over the bridge.

The smoker then charges everybody for a smoke and has a beer with some teriyaki beef.

HUZZAH!

(yes,i do know this is not the answer to the riddle..)

Ok here's one that I can't do,

You have to make 24 using the numbers: 8, 8, 3, 3.

You can multiply, divide, add, and subtract.

All of the numbers must be used, no squaring either.

...Hurts my head.

No, you can only use the separate numbers 8, 8, 3, and 3 one time each. And no combining like 3+3= 33 :P
I've been trying for weeks, my teacher says the answer has lots of brackets in it O_o

RE: Prisoners of War

the closetest to 24 that i can get to is 24.33
i got that by:
1. 8/3 = 2.66
2. 2.66*8 = 21.33
3. 21.33+3 = 24.33

Shame though, it's not how close you get to the answer that determines how close you are to completing it...

If you're looking for something easier and more fun to do try:

RE: Prisoners of War

Got it! (I think).

Okay, divide 8 by 3 (gives you 2 and 2/3)

Minus that from 3, ie 3 - (2 2/3) = 1/3

8 divided by 1/3 = 24!

Edit: I'll describe it in words, see if that makes it easier to understand.
Divide eight by three to give two and two thirds.
Three minus two and two thirds is one third.
Eight divided by one third is the same as multiplying eight and three, hence the answer is twenty four.

RE: Prisoners of War

Other problem is easily solved by using simultaneous equations.

Let x = smaller number and y = larger number. Then

2y = 5x + 3 - equation (1)
4y + 3x = 71 - equation (2)

Rearrange equation (1) to give
2y - 5x = 3
Multiply this by 2 to give
4y - 10x = 6 - equation (3)

equation (2) - equation (3) gives
13x = 65
Hence x = 5

Substitute into equation (1) to give
2y = 25 + 3
Hence y = 14

Check in equation (2)
56 + 15 = 71

Hence the larger number is 14 and the smaller number is 5.

Now...the maths student goes to bed ^^

RE: Prisoners of War

ok, heres another number puzzle for you guys.
only using the numbers 2, 3, and 4. (have to use all three only once). You can use + - * / ()
get them to equal the numbers 1-10. ill do a few of the easy ones as an example

1=
2=
3=
4=
5= (3-2)+4
6=
7=
8=
9= 2+3+4
10=

Post it like this when you can get all 10 right

I'm stumped on 7 and 8 too. And no, you can't square root, clearly stated you can add, subtract, multiply, and divide. And lastly, 2*3*sqrt(4) doesn't equal 8, it's 12.
